The city houses were all rather simple, manufactured in wood, while the Stockholm Cathedral Storkyrkan and the tower named Three Crowns, on the other hand were majestic. It was an overcrowded city, and fires were common making life rather hazardous. The remains from these days are the churches, and fragmentary pieces of the houses. However, the burnt down houses were soon replaced by houses built in a similar fashion, so, the narrow streets and high buildings still give a medieval impression.

. As Gustav Vasa entered the scene, drastic changes were at hand. He made Sweden an independent monarchy, and Stockholm the capital of Sweden. Officially, however, it was not until 1634 that Stockholm gained this status.
By the end of the 17th century, Stockholm had changed once more, knights, Royal emissaries, and merchants rich enough, had palaces and large castles constructed, such as the House of the Knights , and the Royal Palace . Stockholm now had several quarters, and immigration into the city increased.

Heritage and History of Sweden S weden's early history, like its day-to-day life, is intimately wrapped up with the natural rhythms of season and climate. It was the end of the Ice Age that brought the first inhabitants to Scandinavia more than twelve thousand years ago, as the receding glaciers and the warming climate turned barren permafrost into lush plains and vast forests. By 8,000 BC, there were extensive settlements in the region, but dropping temperatures pushed the inhabitants southward to the coasts. A few thousand years later the cycle reversed, and once again the interior became productive, fertile ground. This back and forth movement between the land and the water, between farm and boat, characterizes Swedish culture even today, although the cycle now follows season, holiday, and personal preference. What most people know of Scandinavian history is limited to the Vikings, and what most people know of the Vikings is limited to a vague idea that they were plunderers. In fact, the Vikings of what is now Sweden had a much more lasting impact on history as traders and as founders of some of the great cities of medieval Russia. Embarking from settlements like Birka , tucked deeply and safely within the bays of the Swedish coast, these early seamen headed east and south, establishing trade routes that extended as far as Byzantium and the Golden Caliphate of Baghdad.

Sweden : History
During the seventh and eighth centuries, the Swedes were merchant seamen well known for their far-reaching trade. In the ninth century, Nordic Vikings raided and ravaged the European Continent as far as the black and Caspian Seas. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Sweden gradually became a unified Christian kingdom that later included Finland. Queen Margaret of Denmark united all the Nordic lands in the "Kalmar Union" in 1397. Continual tension within the countries and within the union gradually led to open conflict between the Swedes and the Danes in the 15th century. The union's final disintegration in the early 16th century brought on a long-lived rivalry between Norway and Denmark on one side and Sweden and Finland on the other During and after World War I, in which Sweden remained neutral, the nation benefited from the worldwide demand for Swedish steel, ball bearings, wood pulp, and matches. Postwar prosperity provided the foundations for the social welfare policies characteristic of modern Sweden. Foreign policy concerns in the 1930s centered on Soviet and German developmentism, which stimulated abortive efforts at Nordic defense cooperation. Sweden followed a policy of armed neutrality during World War II and currently remains nonaligned. Sweden became a member of the European Union in 1995. Blekinge Dalarna Gavleborg Gotland ... Sweden History
Sweden history dates back to 9000 B.C. when a high concentration of petroglyphs can be discovered in different regions of Sweden. The early Sweden had been born out of a display of warfare. The first king of Sweden about whom the historians have reached a conclusion is Olof Skötkonung who ruled over Svea and Göta Riken. The dynastic struggles in Sweden continued in the 12th century. The Erik and Sverker clans often got engaged in the struggles. During that period, a new clan came to the throne. This new one was the Folkunga dynasty which was formed after a third clan married into the Erik clan. The Folkunga dynasty brought a stability in the Sweden history of empires. This dynasty gradually brought together the pre-Kalmar-Union Sweden to an actual nation. This amalgamated state of Sweden included the modern Finland. But the stability of the Sweden history of empires did not last long. There were frequent civil wars in Sweden. Finally after the Black Death, Queen Margaret I of Denmark took a bold decision to bring peace in the land of Sweden. She had talks with the Swedish nobility and with their approval forwarded to unite the Nordic countries in the Kalmar Union in 1397. But unfortunately, this decision could not bring peace in the nation. The Swedes and the Danes often led themselves into serious conflict. The modern Sweden history starts in the 16th century when Gustav Vasa fought to bring independence in Sweden. This attempt ultimately led to the foundation of modern Sweden. The Reformation was established in Sweden followed by the break with the Roman Catholic Church. Sweden engaged in a war last in 1814. Since then, the

Sweden History
The first contact of Sweden with other countries of Europe was established during the Viking era, when arms and furs were first traded by the country to Russia, via the eastern channel. The main milestones of Sweden history in the thirteenth century include birth of feudalism, establishment of hereditary nobility, and emergence of a prosperous middle-class of burghers. Another turning point during the period was the attainment of the throne by Margaret, the Norwegian ruler, in 1387. The most important events in 15th and 16th centuries included the 1520 Stockholm Massacre, the National Revolt led by Gustav E. Vasa, establishment of the House of Vasa headed by Gustav I in the year 1523, development of Protestantism in 1593, and crowning of Gustav II Adolf as King of Sweden in the year 1611. Gustav II entered into the 30-year War in year 1629 with the sole objective of changing the Baltic into the Swedish lake. Numerous other significant events followed in the political, cultural, and social areas until King Gustav II finally died in 1632 in Battle of Lutzen . Sweden was proclaimed a super power by the 1648 Peace Treaty of Westphalia. The 18th century saw the defeat of Sweden outside Scandinavia, establishment of absolutism by King Karl XI, its subsequent abolishment by his successor Eleanor, the famous Russian War and other European conflicts around 1772, and the assassination of King Gustav III in 1792. Peace of Kiel was established in year 1814, after which Sweden occupied Norway but lost Finland and German area to Russia and Denmark respectively. The 19th century was marked by the absolute eradication of absolutism due to liberal opposition by Karl XV and subsequent declaration of Norway as an independent state in 1905. Thereafter, Sweden established its own parliament, led by the Social Democrats, who remained in power till year 1976. The country had chosen to remain neutral in both the World Wars, owing to which it enjoyed economic expansion, prosperity, and overall welfare in the post-war period and continues to do so until today.
