Some Notes on
the Swedish Language

Något om svenska språket By Nils William Olsson, Ph.D., F.A.S.G. The Swedish language is a part and parcel of the Indo-European languages, stretching from India to Europe and through migration to the U.S., Canada, Mexico and South America. The language is a part of the North Germanic languages and is identified as an East Scandinavian variant together with Danish. The west branch includes Norwegian and Icelandic. The main difference between these two Scandinavian branches is that Swedish and Danish have no diphthongs, or at least a very few. Thus the word for stone in Swedish and Danish is sten , whereas in Norwegian and Icelandic it is stein . The same thing is true for the word for bone – in Swedish it is ben , in Norwegian it is bein . There are other differences, but I don't wish to become technical. A few diphthongs can be found in Swedish. Thus a parish is Skåne is Raus and the name of the month of August is Augusti . The man's name of August is often pronounced Agust in the vernacular, showing how Swedes avoid diphthongs if at all possible. Curiously the Swede has no problem with the word for

About the author and this course
Why learn Swedish? Swedish is a fascinating and expressive language. It is also a melodic language, admittedly difficult to pronounce like a native because of its characteristic sing-song rhythm, but otherwise not more complicated to learn than English. Most Swedes born after World War II do speak or understand English - many of them very well, actually - and you will probably be able to have a memorable and enjoyable stay in Sweden without any deeper knowledge of Swedish. But you will find that just a few words of Swedish will work as a wonderful door-key to the Swedes, who have a reputation of being rather reserved to strangers. Addressing someone in his or her native language is a matter of respect, a way of showing that you play by their rules, so to speak. To learn a language means to learn to understand the culture where it is spoken and the people who speak it. In a way, to learn a language opens up a new world.

About the Swedish Language
Around the world, approximately nine million people speak Swedish (Svenska) . It is the national language of Sweden and the second official language of Finland. Other languages are also spoken in Sweden the 15,000 Laplanders who herd reindeer in the north speak their own ("Sami") language, and there is a population of Finnish-speaking Swedes along the Finnish border. It is also spoken in the United States, since nineteenth-century immigrants brought the language with them to Minnesota. Viking warriors in the tenth century spoke a language that evolved into the current Nordic languages. What is today the Swedish language is a modern dialect of the original Viking language - similar to Danish, Norwegian, and Icelandic. This group of languages belongs to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European family, and its speakers understand each other (although Icelandic, which has changed very little since the Viking Age, presents difficulties for many Europeans). Modern Swedish is considered to begin with a Swedish translation of the Bible that was published in 1526. Over the next hundred years or so, the modern Swedish language developed around the Svea dialect spoken in Stockholm.

In the 9th century, Old Norse began to diverge into Old West Norse (Norway and Iceland) and Old East Norse (Sweden and Denmark). In the 12th century, the dialects of Denmark and Sweden began to diverge, becoming Old Danish and Old Swedish in the 13th century. All were heavily influenced by Middle Low German during the medieval period. Though stages of language development are never as sharply delimited as implied here, and should not be taken too literally, the system of subdivisions used in this article is the most commonly used by Swedish linguists and is used for the sake of practicality.
Old Norse
In the 8th century, the common Germanic language of Scandinavia, Proto-Norse, had undergone some changes and evolved into Old Norse. This language began to undergo new changes that did not spread to all of Scandinavia, which resulted the appearance of two similar dialects
