The Pre-Olympic Swimming Era - a Turning Point in the History of Swimming
Added on 01/20/2006 to Articles Directory / Sport / Swimming / Swimming history The Pre-Olympic swimming era was introduced with new meaning and purpose. Along with pure utilitarian use it was regarded now as a sport that was a test of endurance and the limits of human body and will, and hence a matter of national pride and public concern. As a consequence it featured the beginning of swimming clubs and swimming records history and the development of all the basic swimming techniques and styles.
The Evolution of Swimming From Ancient History to the Present

Added on 01/20/2006 to Articles Directory / Sport / Swimming / Swimming history The primary goals of swimming in ancient history had less to do with relaxation and health, and more to with the military - its applications for life saving and survival activities. Since pre-historic times, swimming in stone ages and throughout history was a part of everyday life. Swimming in the Middle Ages finally introduced the aspect of competition. And since then, teaching children to swim was regarded a part of the common education.

..Umbra, born about June, 1990 and found six months later as an unclaimed stray, was adopted by Ted Erikson and Diane Richards. Of sleek body and short all black hair, her lineage is unknown, but even as a puppy she exhibited a Labrador's love of water and a Greyhound's love of running. Umbra began swimming tandem with Erikson in Lake Michigan during the summer of 1991, establishing a benchmark of a 32-minute mile. Over the summer of 1992, Umbra decreased her mile time to 28.5 minutes and covered distances up to three miles while pacing Nial Funchion, who went on to complete an English Channel crossing that year. Umbra has pioneered canine swimming with four 'first' records filed with the Guinness Book of World Records * A round trip Peace River crossing in Port Charlotte, Fl on 3/9/94 (2.4 miles,65 min.)

http://www.athleticscholarships.net/history-of-swimming.htm
In 1896, swimming became an Olympic sport for men with the 100 meters and 1500 meters freestyle competitions held in open water. Soon after, as swimming gained popularity, more freestyle events were included, followed by the backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, and lastly, the individual medley. The first modern Olympic Games had only four swimming events, three of them freestyle. The second Olympics in Paris in 1900 included three unusual swimming events. One used an obstacle course; another was a test of underwater swimming endurance; the third was a 4,000-metre event, the longest competitive swimming event ever. None of the three was ever used in the Olympics again. From this humble beginning with four swimming events, the Olympics have now developed to 32 swimming races, 16 for men and 16 for women. The Special Olympics includes competitive swimming for people with disabilities and has 22 events for men and 22 for women. Swimming History
Swimming was invented before recorded history. Humans discovered how to swim by
accident. A person probably fell into the water and struggled to shore using a dog-paddle
stroke. There was an Egyptian hieroglyph for
swimming dating from 2500 BC.
The ancient Greeks and Romans made swimming an important part of their military training programs. There have been known swimming contests that were organized in Japan as early as the 1st century BC. During the Middle Ages in Europe, swimming declined in popularity. People felt that the water was contaminated and a source of disease. Not everyone feared the water, however, Louis XI reportedly swam daily in the Seine. During the early 19th century, swimming enjoyed a revival, especially in England, Lord Byron swam the Dardanelles river, to prove that the mythological hero Leander could have done it.

History of Swimming
Swimming has been known since prehistoric times. Drawings from the Stone Age were found in "the cave of swimmers" near Wadi Sora (or Sura) in the southwestern part of Egypt. Written references date from 2000 B.C., including Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf, and other sagas. In 1538 Nicolas Wynman, German professor of languages, wrote the first swimming book, "Colymbetes". Competitive swimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly using breaststroke. The front crawl, then called the trudgen, was introduced in 1873 by John Arthur Trudgen, copying it from Native Americans. Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic games in 1896 in Athens. In 1902 the trudgen was improved by Richard Cavill, using the flutter kick. In 1908, the world swimming association, Federation Internationale de Natation de Amateur (FINA), was formed. Butterfly was first a variant of breaststroke, until it was accepted as a separate style in 1952.
Ancient Times
Written references date back to 2000 B.C. including Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf, and other sagas, although the style is never described. There are also many mentions of swimmers in the Vatican, Borgian and Bourbon codices.
