History
During the Germanic invasions that swept over the Western Roman Empire in the 4th century AD, the Burgundians and the Alamanni conquered Helvetia. The Protestant Reformation in Switzerland started in 1518, when a country pastor named Huldreich Zwingli began to denounce the sale of indulgences by the Roman Catholic Church. During the 1790s, the French Revolution spread to Switzerland; the French continually intervened in support of Swiss revolutionaries, a group that sought to promote political reforms and the establishment of a strong national government, and in 1798 the revolutionaries occupied all Swiss territory. The Swiss confederation had until that time been a loose defensive alliance, but Napoleon Bonaparte, the future emperor of France, unified the country under the name Helvetic Republic and imposed a written constitution, which was bitterly resented by most of the Swiss.

Switzerland : History
Originally inhabited by the Helvetians, or Helvetic Celts, the territory comprising modern Switzerland came under Roman rule during the Gallic wars in the 1st century BC and remained a Roman province until the 4th century AD. Under Roman influence, the population reached a high level of civilization and enjoyed a flourishing commerce. Important cities, such as Geneva, Basel, and Zurich, were linked by military roads that also served as trade arteries between Rome and the northern tribes. Between 1315 and 1388 the Swiss Confederates inflicted three crushing defeats on the Habsburgs, whose aspiration to regional dominion clashed with Swiss self-determination. During that period, five other localities (cantons in modern-day parlance) joined the original three in the Swiss Confederation. Buoyed by their feats, the Swiss Confederates continuously expanded their borders by military means and gained formal independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499. Routed by the French and Venetians near Milan in 1515, they renounced expansionist policies. By then the Swiss Confederation had become a union of 13 localities with a regularly convening diet administering the subject territories. Swiss mercenaries continued for centuries to serve in other armies; the Swiss Guard of the Pope is a vestige of this tradition.

Introduction
At the beginning of its history, Switzerland was a quiet country, with a meagre population that had little impact on the world. Little is known about its earliest history because of the lack of interest from its surrounding nations. Map of the Switzerland The Swiss National gold reserve however was one of the largest in the world for some time relative to the size of its industry and population, this eventually led to many people coming to take the young country forward in a new direction, at the time a small band of Canadians, after suffering the horrors of the USA-Canada War moved here for a new life, gaining the Presidency against massive odds, with much foreign competition. The country however was invaded on May, 11th 2008 by a coalition of Italy and France. Switzerland held out for many days with foreign aid and against all odds, as it population was outnumbered massively.
Economy
In its early stages the Swiss economy was held afloat by a few companies, that themselves where sustained by the government and its vast wealth, once the last administration came into place, the Fonti Presidency, more emphasis was put on expanding businesses, this was extremely successful as many companies were established and ran without the need for government support.

Last updated : Nov 2009 Switzerland History The history of Switzerland has followed a mostly different course from that of its European neighbours, mainly because no ruler since the 14th century was able to claim more than a theoretical suzerainty over the small, well-organised and prosperous group of cantons that comprise it.
In the period between 1315 and 1388 , they inflicted a series of crushing defeats on the armies of the Dukes of Austria , resulting in many other cantons joining the original three in the Swiss Confederation most powerful in Europe at the end of the 15th century The Reformation led to a division in Swiss society between the followers of the reformer Zwingli and the Catholics . The bitter controversy significantly reduced Swiss influence in Europe and the Confederation was lucky to survive a series of defeats.

Originally colonised by the Helvetians, or Helvetic Celts, the territory comprising modern Switzerland came under Roman rule during the Gallic wars in the 1st century BC and remained a Roman province until the 4th century AD. Under Roman determine, the population reached a high level of civilization and enjoyed a flourishing commerce. valuable cities, such as Geneva, Basel, and Zuvaluable, were linked by military roads that also served as trade arteries between Rome and the northern tribes. The Cold War enhanced the role of neutral Switzerland and offered the nation a way out of its diplomatic isolation after World War II. Economically, Switzerland integrated itself into the American-led Western postwar order, but it remained reluctant to enter supranational bodies. Switzerland did not join the United Nations, even though Geneva became host to the UN's European headquarters, and the nation played an active role in many of the UN's specialized agencies. Switzerland also remained aloof in the face of European integration efforts, waiting until 1963 to join the Council of Europe. It still remains outside the European Union. Instead, Switzerland in 1960 helped form the European Free Trade Area, which did not strive for political union. Following the Cold War, Switzerland joined the Bretton Woods institutions in 1992 and finally became a member of the United Nations in 2002. Switzerland's independence and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers and Switzerland was not involved in either of the two World Wars. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, may be rendering obsolete the country's concern for neutrality.
