Switzerland History
The history of Switzerland, while it predates the Old Confederacy, mainly starts in the late 1200s with the birth of the Old Confederacy, or what we would commonly recognize as Switzerland. Prior to this date, Germanic tribes and the Roman Empire occupied this space. Christianity was brought to the region around the 4 th century A.D., and several feudal governments, primarily Celtic or Germanic tribes, inhabited the area. The Swiss Confederacy was born in 1291, when three Cantons, namely Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden conspired against the ruling Hapsburg dynasty. This conspiracy led to armed conflict in the 1300s. When the Swiss defeated the army of the Holy Roman Empire, they were allowed to remain as a confederacy within the Holy Roman Empire. This pseudo independence lasted for several hundred years, with several Cantons joining and leaving the confederacy at different times. It was not until the late 1400s that the Old Swiss Confederacy achieved independence from the Holy Roman Empire. An armed conflict, aided by Swiss mercenaries and armed forces, placed the confederacy against the Swabian League in 1499. When the Old Confederacy achieved victory, with it came more independence from the Holy Roman Empire, including new lands and territories. While the Swiss military had gained notoriety, with some even claiming they were invincible, it did suffer a major defeat during the Battle of Marignano, which set back the political independence of the new country.

Facts

Switzerland stayed neutral during WW1 and only became involved in relation to the organisation of Red Cross units during the war. During WW2 however Switzerland's involvement has now become infamous having laundered money for Nazi Germany. It is also now known to have shut its borders to Jewish refugees and forcibly repatriated many of those who escaped Nazi-occupied Europe. In 1998, as some recognition for its acts of quiet anti-Semitism during the war, the Swiss government agreed to pay compensation to relatives of Holocaust victims whose funds were deposited in Swiss banks.
After the war, Switzerland was able to expand further its already powerful commercial, financial and industrial base. Zürich became an international banking and insurance centre, while many international bodies, such as the World Health Organisation, set up their headquarters in Geneva.
Switzerland joined the EEA (European Economic Area) but it declined to become a member of the United Nations or NATO since it was afraid that its neutrality might be compromised. It did join EFTA (the European Free Trade Association).

Switzerland History History of Switzerland reveals that Switzerland is a small country of central Europe. It shares its boundary with Germany in north, Austria and Liechtenstein in the east, Italy in the south and France in the west. In other words a meeting point of three different cultures- German, France and Italian. No country in Europe is more interesting than Swiss land. In the ancient times, a Celtic Tribe called Helvetia inhabited Switzerland. In A.D.1032 it became a part of Roman Empire but was soon captured by mighty German Habsburg Empire. It was only after the death of Habsburg ruler Rudolf I in A.D.1291 that led to the foundation of first Swiss Confederation.
