Syria Culture
Syria is a culturally gifted country and has a traditional society. Strong moral and ethical values are placed on family, religion, education and self discipline and respect. Syrians place a high degree on tradition and present themselves well both at home and abroad. It is normal to find Syrian families all over the world who still live there lives as if they were in the Old Country. Syria is a living folklore. The Syrian's taste for the traditional arts continues undiminished. It is expressed in dances such as the famous al-Samah, the Dabkes in all their variations and the sword dance, to name but a few. Marriage ceremonies and the birth of children are occasions for the lively demonstration of folk customs. Traditional Houses of the Old Cities in Damascus, Aleppo and the other Syrian cities are preserved and traditionally the living quarters are arranged around one or more courtyards, typically with a fountain in the middle supplied by spring water, and decorated with citrus trees, grape vines, and flowers arranged for the comfort of the family and entertaining guests. The aura and ambiance of this atmosphere is quite breathtaking and relaxing.

Identification. Syria is the name that was given to the region by the Greeks and Romans and probably derives from the Babylonian suri. Arabs traditionally referred to Syria and a large, vaguely defined surrounding area as Sham, Sham up until the twentieth century. That name still is used to refer to the entire area of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and the West Bank and has become a symbol of Arab unity. Location and Geography. Demography. The population in 2000 was 16,673,282 (not including the 35,150 people living in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, of whom 18,150 are Arabs and 17,000 are Israelis). The country is 90.3 percent Arab. Kurds are estimated to constitute between 3 and 9 percent of the population. Also represented are Turks; Armenians, most of whom fled Turkey between 1925 and 1945; and small numbers of Circassians, Assyrians, and Jews. The Bedoins are Arabs, but form a distinct group. They were originally nomadic, but many have been forced to settle in towns and villages. Linguistic Affiliation.

Syria is a culturally gifted country and maintains a tradition of its own which is unique in all perspectives. Family takes a leading role in placing strong moral and ethical values. The Syrians taste for arts takes a leading role in the expression of their cultural values. Syrian Culture is well expressed through their traditional dances, among which al- samah, dabkes, the sword dance etc are the prominent ones.
The houses of Syria are traditionally build in Damascus, Aleppo, and the living quarters are arranged in such a way that they are around one or more courtyards, mostly with a container in the middle which is supplied by spring water and are beautifully decorated with citrus trees, grape vines and flowers for the comfort of the family and for the entertainment of the guests.
Some Syrian customs revolve around their handicrafts. These crafts are still made in the same way they were used to be made thousands of years ago. Their skills of Embroidery, Ceramics, Pottery, Jewelry are all carried down from generation to generation. These age old traditions simply exemplify the Syrian Culture

CULTURE Ramadan in Syria
Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and worship, is not only a month of piety and religious duties, but also a social phenomenon which affects the whole set of customs and habits of the Syrian society. Ramadan is a month of vivid social activities. First and foremost, it is a month in which family ties become closer than ever, in a society that is already known for its strong family relations. Almost every member of the extended family will take care to invite the whole family to an Iftar (break-fasting) banquet. And in turn he or she will be invited to other banquets held by the rest of the family members. During the month of Ramadan, one will expect to dine with the whole extended family an average of four to five times. Long Ramadan nights are usually spent with friends and neighbors. Playing cards and backgammon, smoking water pipes, exchanging small talk and chats in groupings of tens and more are a typical pastime favorite in Ramadan. [Source: Syria-Online

Email this page to a friend Syria Culture Located at the crossroads of history, the Middle East is the canvas upon which mankind has left a continuous record of our journey through time and space. The region is one of the world's most densely concentrated realms of cultural, religious, and geographic diversity. Wedged between the Mediterranean and the vast Arabian desert, interspersed with snow-capped mountains, fertile river valleys and ethereal rocky landscapes, the area beckons travelers with its endless attractions. Although generally best appreciated during the spring and autumn, the region's mountains are popular for winter skiing and summer escapes from the baking heat of the plains. The coast can be rainy in the winter, while Syria is marked by bitterly cold, dry winters. In the spring, the area is a glorious riot of wildflowers, with pleasantly warm days, occasionally marked by the khamsin -hot winds that blow in from the Sahara for a few days. Historically, the main cities of the region have developed along the coast, rivers, and the fertile oases that have provided rest and sustenance for travelers over thousands of years. The region has profited, economically and historically, from its key location: a fertile swathe of land sandwiched between the Mediterranean and the sweeping Arabian desert. Traders have been forced to pass through this narrow strip of civilization, leaving behind a cornucopia of cities and ruins of a time when caravanserais brought silk, spices and gold from east to west.

Syria : Culture
Syrian society is a mosaic of social groups of various sizes that deficiencys both a consistent stratification system linking all together and a set of shared values and loyalties binding the population into one nation. Distinctions of language, region, religion, ethnicity, and way of life cut across the society, producing a large number of separate communities, each marked by strong internal loyalty and solidarity. Although nearly twothirds of the people are Arabic-speaking Sunni Muslims, they do not constitute a unitary social force because of the strongly felt differences among beduin, villager, and urban dweller. A perceptive observer has spoken of the "empty center" of Syrian society, a society deficiencying an influential group embodying a national consensus.
