Possibly the best single resource on this site is the 3D Photography Forum. Go here to learn techniques and tips, talk to others, and share your photos and enjoy those of others. 3D Photography has been around for a century and a half. It is simply a method of photographically recreating what you already do- perceive depth in everything you see. Standard photographs are only 2-dimensional representations of what you see. 3-Dimensional photographs are taken from two perspectives (you have two eyes, hence two perspectives on a scene). By forcing each eye to see only one photograph, i.e. the left eye sees the left photograph and the right eye sees the right photograph, your brain will reconstruct the depth information from the two pictures and you will see a 3D image. There are various ways of doing this, and this site is meant to give a demonstration of several forms of viewing them.

STEREO (3-D) PHOTOGRAPHY Between 1952 and 1953 my family lived in New York City. This was the peak of the 50's "stereo craze" where Hollywood was cranking out 3-D movies, camera stores had a variety of stereo cameras to satisfy market demand, and every news-stand carried a wide range of 3-D comic books. I was fascinated by stereo photography, but a young fellow in the 6th and 7th grade can hardly afford quality camera gear. I do remember haunting all the local camera shops, lusting after cameras I couldn't afford! I must have been a real pest, but I remember being treated very well in all those shops, probably because I showed real interest in the subject and had done my homework. Our family had a Stereoscope (Holmes) viewer and I did have a Kodak Brownie camera that used 127 roll film. I am quite proud of the fact that I figured out, on my own, that I could take stereo pictures with that camera by shifting the camera between shots. I happily shot stereo with this improvised "system" - mostly black and white (due to financial constraints), but once I did get carried away and shot a roll of early Kodacolor print film. Much later in life I got a used TDC Colorist stereo camera and the matching projector, but by then the craze was over and it got harder and harder to get film processed and mounted. Now, almost 50 years after my first experiments, you might think that stereo photography was just a historical curiosity, but you would be wrong. Individual stereo enthusiasts and stereo clubs in the larger metropolitan areas have kept the flame alive and now we have computers, digital cameras, and the Internet and new opportunities for stereo photography abound! I have set up this web-site to provide a number of useful functions:

The pre focused, easy to use stereo-viewer is made of sturdy cardboard, with acrylic prismatic lenses. Simply place a stereograph on the back flap of the viewer and look through the lenses. The prints are color tinted to simulate the colors of Mars. These are the stereographs that Ron Keas produced from NASA raw images. He made the front page of the Santa Cruz Sentinel for being the first person in the World to produce and publish 3D stereographs from the Spirit Rover. Ron Keas is the photographer for 3-D VIEWMAX. He designed the 3-D VIEWMAX stereo-viewer and photographed all of the 3-D VIEWMAX National Parks Stereograph sets

Guide to 3D Photography
This page describes a simple method of taking and viewing 3D photos that anybody can use. Anybody with one camera (any type) and two eyeballs - with no need for any special equipment, viewing devices or funny glasses. The accompanying pages show examples of Australian and American scenes in 3D using this method. These pages are part of the Stereoscopic 3D Webring.
In a nutshell
When we look at something with our two eyes, we see in three dimensions because our brain interprets depth by comparing the two images from the left and right eyes. To simulate this photographically we need two photos of the same scene, taken from slightly different positions. This can be done using two cameras mounted together, or a multi-lens camera designed for stereo photography, but can also be done with just one camera - even the most basic type. Its simply a matter of taking one photo, moving the camera to one side, then taking another photo. Same scene, slightly different viewpoint. The easiest and most flexible method of viewing the two photos is the "cross-eye" method, where the photos are placed side by side with the "left" photo on the right, and "right" photo on the left. By slightly crossing the eyes, each eye looks at the photo meant for it. When the images match up and focus, the scene appears in life-like 3D, or a good approximation of it. This method can be hard to learn for the first time, but once mastered it is really quite easy. One advantage of this method, apart from requiring no equipment for viewing, is that the photos can be any size. Big enlargements on a lounge room wall can be enjoyed in 3D from across the room.

Experiment
Each eye sees a slightly different view of the world, try holding one finger at arm's length infront of you. Whilst looking at your finger close one eye, notice what is behind it then do the same with your other eye. Alternate opening and shutting each eye and you should notice the background appears to move. This is called Parallax.
To take a picture in 3-D with an ordinary camera, involves taking two pictures 65mm (Average inter-ocular distance) apart then viewing the left and right pictures with each eye respectively. The resultant picture will appear to have depth, this is called Stereopsis.
All you need for Stereo Photography are the following items:
  • An ordinary camera, any format (35mm, 120, 110, digital, etc.) will do.
  • A roll of standard print or slide film.
  • A viewer to see the 3-D.
Here are ways you can take two pictures side by side

Human vision uses several cues to determine relative depths in a perceived scene. Some of these cues are:
  • Stereopsis Accommodation of the eyeball (eyeball focus) Occlusion of one object by another Subtended visual angle of an object of known size Linear perspective (convergence of parallel edges) Vertical position (objects higher in the scene generally tend to be perceived as further away) Haze, desaturation, and a shift to bluishness

Rocker Brian May focuses on 3-D photography
CBC News Brian May of rock band Queen poses in front of an animal rights billboard in London on April 13. His newest project is the book A Village Lost and Found. (Suzanne Plunkett/Reuters) Rock star, astrophysicist and animal rights activist Brian May has revealed a new obsession — stereo photographs. May, the guitarist and songwriter for British rock 'n' roll icons Queen, has co-written a book that pulls together a group of 3-D photos dating from the 1850s that were taken by gentleman photographer T.R. Williams. Williams became a huge star in his day through stereoscopy, a technique that presents a 3-D image to the viewer, similar to the kind of image you would see in a Viewmaster. May, who surprised music fans by finishing his PhD thesis on space dust in 2007, 30 years after he had begun it, said he has been interested in stereoscopic pictures since he was nine. Music had led him down another path, but a few years ago, he began research that led to this book

3D and Stereoscopy - aren't those the same? Stereoscopic imaging (or "real 3D"), however, requires a minimum of two pictures, simulating our two eyes. This can either be accomplished by using traditional photography (stereo photography), computers (for example Virtual Reality ) or Lasers ( Holography 3D-Images can either be displayed as stereo pairs in a 3D-viewer (for slides or prints), or on a computer screen. Other formats include anaglyph pictures (requiring red-green or red-blue 3D-Glasses) and digital stereo projection (either with "passive" polarized 3D glasses or with "active" LCD Shutter glasses).
