    Taiwan - Geography
History Geography Religion Current Events Taiwan (The Republic of China) is a large island about 100 miles (165 kilometers) off the coast of China in the South China Sea. It is part of a chain of islands extending from Japan through the Philippines to Indonesia and Taiwan is located between Japan and the Philippines. The country actually consists of the main island of Taiwan (once called Formosa-beautiful island- by the Portuguese), the Penghu (Pescadores) Archipelago of 64 islands, and about 21 smaller islands. Taiwan is separated from the mainland by the Taiwan Straits. Taiwan is engaged in three “border” disputes over who controls certain island groups. Along with China, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam, it lays claim to the oil rich Sprately Islands situated between these countries; in addition, both Taiwan and Vietnam lay claim to the Paracel Islands. Taiwan, along with China, further lay claims to the Japanese administered Daioyu Tai (Japanese Senkaku) Islands. Taiwan’s climate is subtropical (it lies on the Tropic of Cancer) with monsoon rains between October and March in the north and between May and September in the south. Typhoons are common during the summer, July and August. Summers are very hot and humid and, while winters are short and mild, they too are damp which makes them feel colder than they are. The high mountains get some snow in the winter and this allows a small and limited ski season.
