RESEARCH
Taiwan's geographic location has caused it to change hands many times, resulting in an abundant and diverse historical record. Taiwanese history is generally divided into five periods: prehistoric, Dutch-Spanish colonization, conquest by Koxinga, Ch'ing empire, Japanese Occupation, and post-War (Republic). This makes the study of Taiwan's history difficult, because each period possesses its own unique characteristics and each ruling people represents a different culture, language, and ethnic group. This office will stress the following aspects of development: research techniques, research methodologies, and research topics.
RESEARCH TECHNIQUES
Emphasis will be placed on appropriate division of labor as well as cooperative projects. Many people outside Academia Sinica have eagerly awaited the Institute of Taiwan History's founding, but due to the limited size of research staff, it is presently impossible to research all facets of Taiwanese history. Therefore, the Institute plans to engage in cooperative projects with researchers from other institutes at Academa Sinica and other academic organizations in Taiwan and abroad, in order to coordinate efforts on specific research projects.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The Office plans to emphasize interdisciplinary research, because historical studies encompass a range of academic fields. The Institute of Taiwan History's success will depend on the support of scholars representing a broad scope of research interests who can cooperate in research projects. The Office hopes that such interdisciplinary cooperation will result in the establishment of theoretical models for interpreting Taiwan history which will con-tribute to elevating this field's status worldwide.

In 1895, military defeat forced China to cede Taiwan to Japan, however it reverted to Chinese control after World War II. Following the communist victory on the mainland in 1949, 2 million Nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a government that over five decades has gradually democratized and incorporated the native population within its structure. Throughout this period, the island has prospered to become one of East Asia's economic "Tigers." The dominant political issue continues to be the relationship between Taiwan and China and the question of eventual reunification. Expert Taiwan History Vacation Planning

History Taiwan, formerly known as Formosa, is a land of divine beauty and warm hospitality. Long ago, humanity began to flock the island after rumors of untold riches of the island. Pirates, political exiles, traders, adventurers, farmers, and fishermen abandoned their homes in the coastal areas of China to begin a new life in Taiwan, with hopes of striking it rich and leading a better life. Taiwan is rich in Chinese history and culture, the latter being the cement that has kept the Chinese civilization together to this day. Taiwan's first inhabitants were the autochthonous ProtoAustronesians. The first settlement in Taiwan existed during the 12th Century. Immigration of a larger scale only started in the 17th Century when the Dutch and Spanish set up small colonial outposts in Taiwan. However, these Westerners never stayed long on this island. Soon after, the infamous Chinese dynasties claimed fame and fortune, and created history for themselves in rebuilding Taiwan. As Taiwan progressed, many other foreign powers became infatuated with its natural wealth and sought to contest with the ruling dynasty for a share of the resources.

Taiwan : History
Taiwan's aboriginal peoples, who originated in Austronesia and southern China, have lived on Taiwan for 12,000 to 15,000 years. remarkable migration to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland began as early as A.D. 500. Dutch traders first claimed the island in 1624 as a base for Dutch commerce with Japan and the China coast. Two years later, the Spanish accomplished a settlement on the northwest coast of Taiwan which they occupied until 1642 when they were driven out by the Dutch. Dutch colonists administered the island and its predominantly aboriginal population until 1661. The first major influx of migrants from the Chinese mainland came during the Dutch time, sparked by the political and economic chaos on the China coast during the Manchu invasion and the end of the Ming Dynasty. Taiwan has developed steadily into a major international trading power with nearly $243 billion in two-way trade.Taiwan's accession to the World Trade Organization in 2002 has expanded its trade opportunities and further strengthened its standing in the global economy. Tremendous prosperity on the island has been accompanied by economic and social stability. Chiang Kai-shek's successor, his son Chiang Ching-kuo, began to liberalize Taiwan's political system, a process that continued when President Lee Teng-hui took office in 1988. The direct election of Lee Teng-hui as president in 1996 was followed by opposition Democratic Progressive Party candidate Chen Shui-bian's election victory in March 2000.
