    Cultural Activities in Tajikistan
Through its programmes in Tajikistan, AKTC is helping preserve, develop and promote local musical traditions. For centuries, Central Asia has been home to a mix of diverse cultures, societies and traditions. The Soviet era witnessed great leaps in education in the region and the emergence of a literate society immersed in the rich fabric of the period's literature, arts and culture. Since independence, Central Asian states have begun to reassert their identities, drawing upon the indigenous culture that had often been overlooked during the previous era. The Aga Khan Trust of Culture (AKTC) is supporting the revival of Central Asia's cultural history through research and active programming in order to foster tolerance, appreciation and preservation of this vital heritage both within the country and abroad. Through its programmes in Tajikistan, AKTC is helping preserve, develop and promote

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The Culture of Tajikistan has developed over several thousand years. Historically, Tajiks and Persians come from very similar stock with a mutual language and are related as part of the larger group of Aryan peoples . Tajik culture can be divided into two areas, Metropolitan and Kuhiston(Highland). Ancient towns such as Bukhara Samarkand Herat , Balkh and Nishopur Khiva are no longer part of the country. More modern centres include Dushanbe (the capital), Khudjand, Kulob, Panjikent and Istarvshan.

edit Historical background
In order to understand Tajik culture it is necessary to look back to the time of Transoxiana, (an area that lies between the Amu Darya and Sir Darya rivers and modern north-west Afghanistan ), and the centres of civilization of the Nile Mesopotamia and the banks of the Yangtze . The Tajiks ' ancestors were from Scythian Indian or European tribes who were nomads of the Eurasian steppes and were among the first to settle in Central Asia about 4000 years ago.

Identification. The Tajik people are of ethnic Persian descent and constitute the largest indigenous group in the country (about 65 percent of the population). Within this group are the Pamiris, who live in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province and number nearly forty thousand. The Pamiris speak a different language and belong to the Ismaili Shiite sect of Islam, while Tajiks are Sunni. Gorno-Badakhshon is surrounded by mountains, and is isolated for most of the year. Other ethnic groups that were caught within the country as the borders in Central Asia were redrawn during the Soviet era include Uzbeks, Kyrgyz, Turkmen, Kazakhs, Uyghur, and Bukharan and European Jews. Beginning in the eighteenth century, many Russians migrated to the area as soldiers and laborers. Other nonindigenous ethnic groups include Crimean Tartars, Ukrainians, Belorussians, Georgians, Osetians, Koreans, and Armenians. When Tajikistan won independence in 1991, a struggle for power between the clans developed into a civil war. At that time, Islamic fundamentalists wanted to create an Islamic state. Political instability led to a collapsing infrastructure, corruption, and extreme poverty.

The most revered figures from Tajikistan's Persian past are the 10th century philosopher-scientist Abu Ali ibn Sina , author of two of the most important books in the history of medicine, and the poet Rudaki, court poet in Bukhara in the time of the Samanids. Tajiks also venerate Firdausi, a poet and composer of the Shah-nameh (Book of Kings), the Persian national epic, and Omar Khayyam, of Rubaiyat fame, both born in present-day Iran but at a time when it was in the same empire as Tajikistan.
When Tajikistan was hived off from Uzbekistan in 1929, the new nation-state was forced to leave behind its cultural baggage.
t a j i k i s t a n The new Soviet order set about providing a replacement pantheon of arts, introducing modern drama, opera and ballet. The policy paid early dividends and the 1940s are considered a golden era of Tajik theatre. A kind of Soviet fame came to some Tajik novelists and poets, such as Mirzo Tursunzade and Sadriddin Ayni, the latter now remembered more as a deconstructor of national culture because of his campaign to eliminate all Arabic expressions and references to Islam from the Tajik tongue. Since independence there has been something of a cultural revival in an attempt to foster a sense of national identity. The succuss of Tajikistan's most popular living writer, Taimur Zulfikarov, is attributed to his abiity to mimic the ancient Persian style of writing and, in doing so, to appeal to nationalist sentiments.

Let's start with the fact with that Tajiks are a very ancient nation. Hence, the culture of this people is rather unique and originates somewhere in extreme antiquity. Tajiks have managed to preserve the traditions and customs of people who are the basis of the cultural life of the nation. The cult structures and archaeological finds which testify about prosperous cultural development are related to the 6th - 5th centuries B.C. among those are the objects made of metal, stone, terracotta. During the archaeological excavations near the city of Penjikent were found dwelling and cult structures, beautiful monumental paintings, sculptures which are related to the 7th - 8th centuries. And what magnificent samples of architecture are the ancient mosques! Their wall paintings can be regarded as authentic pieces of art. Tajiks always aspired to knowledge of the world. And this is reflected in their science, literature, art. Tajiks are especially protective in relation to their native language. For millennia they have carefully preserve it, passing it from generation to generation, like a kind of a relic, trying not to distort it borrowing something foreign. Arabian conquerors practically destroyed the original tongue of Tajiks - dari. However, Tajiks managed to return its original magnificence. The language sounded again in the masterpieces of Tajik classics: fiction, songs, scientific treatises, etc.

Back to Tajikistan Society As they did during the Soviet era, educated Tajiks define their cultural heritage broadly, laying claim to the rich legacy of the supraethnic culture of Central Asia and other parts of the Islamic world from the eastern Mediterranean to India. Soviet rule institutionalized Western art forms, publishing, and mass media, some elements of which subsequently attracted spontaneous support in the republic. However, since the beginning of Soviet rule in the 1920s, the media and the arts always have been subject to political constraints.
      Literature
Despite long-standing Soviet efforts to differentiate between the Persian speakers of Central Asia and those elsewhere, Tajiks in Tajikistan describe all of the major literary works written in Persian until the twentieth century as Tajik, regardless of the ethnicity and native region of the author. In Soviet times, such claims were not merely a matter of chauvinism but a strategy to permit Tajiks some contact with a culture that was artificially divided by state borders. Nevertheless, very little Persian literature was published in Cyrillic transcription in the Soviet era. Three writers dominated the first generation of Soviet Tajik literature. Sadriddin Aini (1878-1954), a Jadidist writer and educator who turned communist, began as a poet but wrote primarily prose in the Soviet era. His works include three major novels dealing with social issues in the region and memoirs that depict life in the Bukhoro Khanate. Aini became the first president of Tajikistan's Academy of Sciences.

As they did during the Soviet era, educated Tajiks define their cultural heritage broadly, laying claim to the valuable legacy of the supraethnic culture of Central Asia and other parts of the Islamic world from the eastern Mediterranean to India. Abu'l-Qasem Lahuti was an Iranian poet who emigrated to the Soviet Union for political reasons and eventually settled in Tajikistan. He wrote both lyric poetry and "socialist realist" verse. Another poet, Mirzo Tursunzoda ,collected Tajik oral literature, wrote poetry of his own about social change in Tajikistan, and turned out various works on popular political themes of the moment. Since the generation that included those three writers, Tajikistan has produced numerous poets, novelists, short story writers, and playwrights.
