The traditions and culture in Tajikistan are different and similar at the same time, the same as it is in many different countries all over the world. But Tajikistan is a small mountainous country and many of its spots and areas were quite isolated (some areas - very isolated) just before the 20th century.
The flat areas and big cities were often times under "press" of continue invasions of different cultures and ethnics. As result,
You may see people with very different features, from Mongolian (North, North-West and South) type to typical European (Kohistan, Badakhshan). Definitely, the Tajik culture had some influence of other cultures, but in its origin this is a culture
of Iranian people; in language, music, behavior, architecture and etc. At present, it is much related to so-called Islamic culture, although there are still remains of pre-islamic culture, which is "adapted" to Islamic traditions (such as deep trust in holy places - mazars, and Holy Spirit; "clean" and "unclean" animals and men, solar symbols in handicrafts and traditional clothes, traditional architecture and etc.). In Soviet time many traditions were almost disappeared. So, many historical and traditional things might be seen in museums only. The traditional food is also changed in last 50-60 years. Traditionally, the Tajik people, especially from mountain areas

    Tajikistan Customs and Traditions
Tajiks are one of the most ancient peoples in the world. Archaeologists have dated settlements in the territory of today's Tajikistan date back to the end of the upper Paleolithic period, fifteen to twenty thousand years ago. The Tajiks have preserved many of the ancient traditions and customs of their ancestors. They have their own spoken language – a variety of Persian. Large families spanning several generations live together under one roof as the family and their farms and businesses reflect this prosperity and the welcome a guest receives reflects the legendary hospitality.
    Tajikistan Weddings
Tajiks living on the plateau have very unique wedding ceremonies. Most ethnic groups in Central Asia begin the wedding ceremony with the betrothal and arrangements made by the elders of the family, but a Tajik wedding is quite different. It lasts seven days! On the first day of the ceremony, the bride and the bridegroom proclaim their marriage and hold separate banquets with their own families, which continue for three days. On the fifth day, the bridegroom, accompanied by friends and relatives, goes to his bride's home. There, the newlyweds make their commitment before an in imam, after which they must drink a cup of water and eat a bit of meat, cake and salt. This seals the marriage, and only then are they allowed to be together.

Tajikistan Culture and the Arts
As they did during the Soviet era, educated Tajiks define their cultural heritage broadly, laying claim to the rich legacy of the supraethnic culture of Central Asia and other parts of the Islamic world from the eastern Mediterranean to India. Soviet rule institutionalized Western art forms, publishing, and mass media, some elements of which subsequently attracted spontaneous support in the republic. However, since the beginning of Soviet rule in the 1920s, the media and the arts always have been subject to political constraints. Literature Despite long-standing Soviet efforts to differentiate between the Persian speakers of Central Asia and those elsewhere, Tajiks in Tajikistan describe all of the major literary works written in Persian until the twentieth century as Tajik, regardless of the ethnicity and native region of the author. In Soviet times, such claims were not merely a matter of chauvinism but a strategy to permit Tajiks some contact with a culture that was artificially divided by state borders. Nevertheless, very little Persian literature was published in Cyrillic transcription in the Soviet era. Three writers dominated the first generation of Soviet Tajik literature. Sadriddin Aini (1878-1954), a Jadidist writer and educator who turned communist, began as a poet but wrote primarily prose in the Soviet era. His works include three major novels dealing with social issues in the region and memoirs that depict life in the Bukhoro Khanate. Aini became the first president of Tajikistan's Academy of Sciences.
