English is the second official language and the country’s commercial language as well as the main teaching language for all the scientific subjects in secondary schools and higher education institutions. CULTURE Tanzania’s culture is a result of African, Arab, European and Indian influences. The African people of Tanzania represent about 120 tribal groups. The largest group are of Bantu origin including Dukuma, Nyamwezi, Makonde, Haya and Chagga. The Maasai are of Nilotic origin, as are the Arusha and the Samburu. Tanzania is one of the least urbanised countries in Sub- Saharan Africa, but traditional African ideals are being deliberately adapted to modern life. The Tanzanians are friendly people, to foreigners and amongst themselves. Politeness, respect and modesty are highly valued. It is recommended that you learn some Swahili greetings (see “Language”). Handshakes are very important and you may continue holding hands during conversation.

Diverse Tribal Cultures
With over 120 tribes, Tanzania is one of the most culturally diverse countries in all of Africa. From the tall graceful Maasai warriors, to the ancient ways of the Hadza bushmen, to the resourceful agricultural practices of the Wameru, visitors to Tanzania will be impressed by the fascinating array of tribal cultures. While the main focus on a safari is usually the African wildlife, we think it is also important to introduce our guests to our Tanzanian friends. Our roots are in Tanzania. We have long-standing relationships with tribal elders in many villages throughout Tanzania. Our guides and employees have friends and family all over the country and anywhere you travel with Thomson Safaris you will receive a warm welcome from the local people. It is just one of the many benefits of traveling with a company so well established and respected in Tanzania.
"If the animals were majestic, the people were magnificent. We were wrapped in their warmth, delighted in their happy humor and overwhelmed by their desire to make every moment of our trip perfect. A world could learn about graciousness from these men and women."

Tanzania's 100 or more different tribal groups are mostly of Bantu origin. The Arab influence on Zanzibar and Pemba islands is evident in the people, who are a mix of Shirazia (from Persia), Arabs, Comorians (from the Comoros Islands) and Bantu from the mainland, though the latter predominate. Asians are a significant minority especially in the towns and cities. Europeans (either by descent or expatriate) are a smaller minority. The major non-Bantu people on the mainland are the Maasai (Nilotic speakers) who inhabit the northeastern section of the country. Swahili and English are the official languages, with English the principal language of commerce. There are also many local African tongues, reflecting the tribal diversity of the country. Outside the cities and towns, far fewer local people speak English than in comparable areas in Kenya. It's said that the Swahili spoken on Zanzibar is of a much purer form than elsewhere, and quite a few travelers head for the island to learn it. The two main religions are Christianity and Islam, with Hindus making up about a quarter of the population. The majority of Muslims are concentrated along the coast and in the islands. Compared to Islam, Christianity took a long time to make an impact, and even then (during the 19th century) it was practiced mainly among tribes of the interior. There are still many tribes who follow neither of the big-name religions and instead worship the ancient spirit of their choice. Principal among them are the Maasai, who put their faith in the god Engai and his Messiah, Kindong'oi, from whom their priests are said to be descended. It's claimed that there is no religious bias present in the country's political and civil administration.

Tanzania : Culture
Olduvai Gorge, in the Great Rift Valley, is the site of the find of some of the earliest known remains of human ancestry, dating back 1,750,000 years. The ancient in-migration of Cushitic, Nilotic, and Bantu peoples, displacing the native San-type population, resulted in a complex agglomeration of tribal communities practicing complementary forms of pastoral and agricultural livelihoods. In the last 500 years, Portuguese, Arab, Indian, German, and British traders and colonists have added to the mosaic. Today Tanzania's multiethnic and multiracial population practices a mixture of traditions and customs that form a valuable cultural heritage. Oral storytelling traditions and tribal dancing are an valuable part of the cultural life of the rural population. The University of Dar es Salaam has an active theatre arts group. Among the visual arts, Makonde carvers from southern Tanzania are renowned for their abstract ebony carvings, and Zanzibar is famous for its elaborately carved doors and Arab chests. Basket weaving, pottery, and musical instrument making are prevalent in many rural areas. Arusha Dar Es Salaam Dodoma Iringa ... AskBabyNames @ 2008 MapZones

Tanzania
has a harmonious national culture, one that is based on a subtle but strong social code of courtesy and respect. Tanzania's culture is a result of African, Arab, European and Indian influences. Tanzania is one of the least urbanised countries in sub-Saharan Africa, but traditional African ideals are being deliberately adapted to modern life. The Tanzanians are friendly to foreigners and amongst themselves. Politeness, respect and modesty are also highly valued, so it would be very helpful to learn some Swahili greetings before visiting. Take the time to greet people before you ask them for directions. Handshakes are very important in social etiquette. Tanzanians frequently continue holding hands throughout a conversation. Note that the right hand is usually used for eating , while the left is traditionally used for toilet duties - you should try not to pass items to others with your left hand. When receiving items from others, do so with both hands, or with the right hand while touching the left hand to your right elbow. Immodest attire, public affection and open anger are disrespectful to the Tanzanian people.

My vacation to Tanzania
Dear Diary,
I was sitting in my seat thinking about the lions, leopards, giraffes, and zebras. I was trying my hardest not to think about the plane crashing, so I tried to occupy myself by thinking about the animals I'd see in Tanzania. The stewardess had been gone about ten to fifteen minutes by now, that was just enough time to freak myself out. The window to my right taunted me, begging me to look through down to the ground we flew above. I leaned closer, then turned back quickly A few seconds later I tried it again, slowly creeping closer and closer, as if sneaking up on it I almost got there, almost looked through the window thenÂ…" Amanda?" The stewardess scared the life out of me she knew I was scared about being on the plane, because I told her earlier. She took me up to... Read Full Essay Already a Member?

    Tanzania Culture
Your guide is a local person born and raised in the area, well trained in their job and proficient in English. Cultural tours can be half-day events or incorporated into a longer safari. Whether you spend the morning in a Maasai boma or trek by a camel up a local summit, stopping to learn about traditional plants and tribal stories, a cultural tour is a must-do for anyone wanting to see the rich life of the Tanzanian people. Below are some of Tanzania’s best known cultural tours.
    Eyasi
Home to some of the last hunter-gathers in Africa, the Hadzabe Bushmen have made the area around Lake Eyasi their long-time hunting grounds. Day trips or longer safari with the Hadzabe bushmen give visitors a chance to experience a way of life that has long since vanished elsewhere on the planet. Morning hunt with the Hadzabe warriors, armed with bows and arrows, offer a fascinating glimpse into an ancient way of life. Honey-gathering, walks to find traditional healing plants and food, and traditional dances are all parts of the Hadzabe cultural tourism experiences.
    Kilimanjaro
Why not combine a hike up the world’s most impressive mountain with a visit to its people, the historically progressive Chagga? See traditional and modern Chagga art, culture and homes.
