Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by a tapping sound that is created from metal plates attached to both the ball and heel of the dancer's shoe. The influences of tap dancing may include:
  • African
    • Juba dancing , a very quick and competitive dance involving intricate foot work, stomping, hand clapping and slapping and patting parts of the body. Predating tap, there seems to be no historical evidence of percussive (on the heel and toe) dance footwear in this culture.

    • Lancashire clogging , a dance using percussive shoes. Early english "tappers" nailed or tacked copper pennies to the undersides of their shoes to create a light clicking sound, the triangular configuration used by these early dancers was the original inspiration for "three-screw" tap shoes - now the most commonly available tap shoe in Dance Stores.

Ireland is well know for it's many percussive dance forms, including stomp dancing, and step dancing. Spain has the rhythmic Flamenco dance, which is characterized by hang clapping. Africa is known for Juba dance, a quick dance involving clapping the hands, and slapping the legs. All these dances have an element of competition, similar to tap dancing. NOTICE:
Due to threats of a law suit, I was forced to remove the tap dance dictionary that appeared on this page.
Apparently there is an angry "crowd" in the "tight-knit" tap "community" planning to bring a lawsuit against me for plagiarism. One member of the crowd has threatened they will "ruin whatever name you're trying to make for yourself."
Frankly I'm more amused than insulted. My intentions in hosting this site have never had anything to do with making my name.
This site was created when I searched for tap dance information on the web and found very little. It was designed strictly for research purposes in an attempt to preserve some of the heritage and history. I have always paid for this domain out of my own pocket. I have never made a single dime.
Furthermore, my name is barely even mentioned on these pages!
Even so, a plagiarism suit is "in the works" by a crowd that thinks they invented the shuffle ball change! The irony is rich indeed.
The art form of tap dance was originally invented by African - Americans. It was developed generations ago by Black folks to serve their own purposes. It was never intended as a money-making venture to be bought and sold in dictionaries and such. So the tap "community" with their plagiarism charge and "legal actions in the works" have stolen every step they know from Black people.

John McLaughlin
No one really knows when the phrase "tap dance" was first used perhaps as early as 1900 but it didn't appeared in print until around
Merriam-Webster defines it two ways, first: A step dance tapped out audibly by means of shoes with hard soles or soles and heels to which taps have been added.
The second definition is more interesting: An action or discourse intended to rationalize or distract. "Given her history, it makes political sense for Hillary Clinton to send cultural signals that she's much more conservative than her caricature. Still, her tap dance toward the right carries a cost." Eleanor Clift "If you play a tune and a person don't tap their feet, don't play the tune."

    See More About:
zSB(3,3) Tap is an exciting form of dance in which dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats. The term "tap dancing" is derived from the tapping sound produced when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch a hard floor or surface.
    Tappers and Hoofers:
The most common style of tap dancing is called "classical tap." Classical tap dancers, known as "tappers", use their arms and upper bodies to blend movements of ballet or jazz into their tap routines. On the other hand, "hoofers" are tap dancers that focus on their footwork, using very little upper body or arm movements. Hoofers try to use every part of their shoes to make their feet sound like drums. A popular performance of this style of tap dancing is Riverdance.
