1. TARANTULAS.com | The Web Home For Tarantula Keepers | Tarantulas For Sale
tarantulas.com is the original portal for tarantula enthusiasts, providing information for tarantula keepers and offering captivebred tarantulas and other arachnids for sale
http://www.tarantulas.com/
About Us
TARANTULAS.com is the original Internet source for tarantula information and a leader in tarantula sales and captive breeding. We support the hobby in numerous ways, especially with our intensive captive breeding efforts. Specializing in the immensely popular arboreal tarantulas, such as the Avicularia "pink-toed treespiders" of South America and the Poecilotheria ornamental tarantulas of Sri Lanka and India, we consistently produce some of the finest tarantulas available. We don't bother with a wide number of species, but instead focus on the most desirable and popular pets.
The New Site
We are excited to launch this re-designed TARANTULAS.com and continue to provide exceptional information on tarantula keeping to both the beginner and advanced keeper. Please see the Quick Links in the right sidebar to read articles on important tarantula husbandry topics. As one of the first arachnid hobbyist cyber-communities, TARANTULAS.com originally featured an interactive member's forum. However, over time our forum saw decreased use as other hobby portals went online. Some have since fallen by the wayside, but one in particular has become enormously successful - ARACHNOBOARDS . Running a huge forum requires a great deal of time for post moderation and site maintenance, and we simply don't have it. So, with the launch of this new TARANTULAS.com redesign, we have chosen to eliminate the forum feature. Therefore, there is no longer a "membership" log-in to the site. All features are available to all visitors, including our greatly expanded care information and gallery sections.

Tarantula care
Tarantulas are spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae . They are characterized by having tarsi (feet) with two claws and claw tufts. Tarantulas can be kept as house pets . A terrarium with an inch or two of damp vermiculite or a mixture of soil and sphagnum moss (but not with cedar shavings as they are toxic to many spiders) on bottom provides an ideal habitat. (Burrowing tarantulas will require a much deeper layer.) Tarantulas can be fed a variety of living animals (insects, small mice, small fish in the water bowl, and reptiles are on their menu).
The true tarantula
The true tarantulas are all spiders of the family Theraphosidae , sometimes called bird spiders or monkey spiders. Related families include the funnel-web spiders and the trap door spiders, which sometimes also get called tarantulas. The family Theraphosidae includes over 300 different species of tarantulas , divided over 12 subfamilies (formerly 13). Tarantulas are excellent climbers.

Tarantulas
I have been keeping tarantulas since 1994, currently my collection is around 6 spiders. At one time I had 25, all of different species. Tarantulas make great pets as long as you have the right attitude. They are not active, or interactive. Tarantulas are best viewed like tropical fish, interesting to watch but not to touch. Click here for information on tarantula care and housing. Most people have an adverse reaction when they hear you keep tarantulas. Some common misconceptions are that all tarantulas are mean and go out of their way to attack you, and that their venom is deadly. In reality most tarantulas (except for a few select species) will do anything to avoid people and only bite as a last resort. The majority of tarantulas have venom similar to a bee sting, causing minor swelling and discomfort. The major danger from a tarantula bite is an allergic or anaphalactic reaction to the venom, which can occur.

Some members of the same Suborder may also be called "tarantulas" in the common parlance. This article will restrict itself to describing members of the Theraphosidae. Some genera of tarantulas hunt prey primarily in trees; others hunt on or near the ground. All tarantulas can produce silk—while arboreal species will typically reside in a silken "tube tent", terrestrial species will line their burrows with silk to stabilize the burrow wall and facilitate climbing up and down. Tarantulas mainly eat insects and other arthropods, using ambush as their primary method of prey capture. The biggest tarantulas can kill animals as large as

Much Maligned, Tarantulas are Relatively Harmless
Family Theraphosidae And the Lycosa Tarantula , progenitor of the Tarantella Dance. Belt Buckles; key fobs, arachnid abuse. Another creature suffering from the image of giant, man-eating arachnids foisted on us by Hollywood, like the sharks, wolf and more. Tarantulas are, in the main, pretty harmless to man, especially those content to observe the giant spiders without feeling the need to harass them, such as poking them with a stick or throwing stones at them. They can, as can all arachnids , bite and inject venom, which they do to stun prey. In all cases, the tarantula venom is much weaker than that of the dangerous

General Information
Buying a Tarantula
1. Make sure the tarantula is not sitting there with it's legs underneath it, or that it reacts slowly to touch or not at all. Those are signs that the Tarantula may be dying. 2. Check that there is a water source in the tank such as a water dish. If the abdomen of the tarantula is shrunken, that is a sign that the tarantula is dehydrated. 3. Ask the pet store if they know the Scientific Name of the tarantula. Pet stores sometimes make up common names which you will not be able to find information on. If you know the scientific name, you should be able to find a care sheet on how to care for your specific tarantula. 4. See if they can tell you the sex of the tarantula. Females generally have a much longer lifespan than a male.

Chilean Rose tarantula, a species commonly sold in pet stores. zSB(3,3) Most people would recognize a tarantula, but few know just what an interesting spider a tarantula can be. These big, beefy spiders strike fear in the hearts of arachnophobes everywhere, but in truth, tarantulas are some of the least aggressive and dangerous spiders around. These 10 cool facts about tarantulas will give you new respect for this amazing arachnid. 1. Female tarantulas can live 30 years or longer in the wild.
Female tarantulas are famously long-lived. Even in captivity, they've been known to live for over 20 years. Males, on the other hand, don't make it much beyond reaching sexual maturity, with a life span of just 5-10 years on average. In fact, males don't even molt once they reach maturity. 2. The largest tarantulas have a leg span of nearly 10 inches, or about the size of a dinner plate.

AUGUST 2009 We've been away for a little while, but we are back online! It has been too long since I've been able to update this site, and I apologize. I will be adding some information a little at a time regarding new species we have in our collection. We are also slowly starting a breeding program. Our first coupling happened the first weekend in August 2009 between our female P. murinus and a male that was given to us at the 11th annual ATS conference. (More on that as well!)
