Tarantulas are large hairy spiders that live in warm areas around the world, including South America, southern North America, southern Europe, Africa, southern Asia, and Australia. The greatest concentration of tarantulas is in South America. There are about 300 species of tarantulas. The biggest tarantula is Pseudotherathosa apophysis , which has a leg span of about 13 inches (33 cm). These arachnids have a very long life span; some species can live over 30 years. Habitat : Some tarantulas live in underground burrows; some live on the ground, and others live in trees. They live in

Awhile back I mentioned that I thought that it odd that nobody eats tarantulas because of their close relationship to crabs and the likefavorite foods in many cuisines. Last night I was watching a show on a tribe of Amazonian Indians and lo and behold, they were trapping and cooking the big ol' spiders. And I do mean big. These guys were the size of blue crabs. I would guess that they're at least eight inches across the spread legs.
"Take one tarantula..." Not an easy process! First they catch the critters by luring them out of their tunnels with a long strip of grass. The hunter then very deftly grabs the spider by the thorax, folds the legs back and wraps the spider in a leaf for transportation to the camp site.
At the campsite, the spiders are killed. Everything is used. The abdomens are removed and stripped of eggs. The eggs are wrapped in a leaf and roasted over a fire to produce a spider egg omelette. The bodies are tossed directly onto a fire to singe off the hair and to cook the meat. When they're done, the legs and thorax are cracked open and picked just like when you eat a crab. After the meal the fangswhich are a good inch and a half long are used as toothpicks. It was emphasized that the spiders taste *very* much like crab.

Tarantulas During the Fall of each year we tend to have an increase in calls regarding tarantulas. This is largely due to the fact that many can be seen in the evenings crawling out onto warm blacktop roads in the evening to savor the residual warmth. Occasionally, these very large, hairy spiders are found within a dwelling causing alarm and panic among those fearing spiders. Actually, most tarantulas are docile, non-aggressive and rarely bite. Bites are not considered dangerous and cause little lasting pain. Bites are no more painful than a bee sting, and its symptoms should be treated similarly. Some have a dense covering of special hairs on the abdomen, which, when dislodged, cause skin irritation. This is mechanical rather than chemical in nature. The name tarantula has unfortunately become associated with several spider families, but most often is applied to the ones called the hairy mygalmorphs. Tarantulas have been much publicized in horror shows in movie houses and television shows due to their forbidding hairy appearance. Identification The largest tarantulas are tropical with a body length of 3-1/2 inches and leg span of 9-1/2 inches. The largest United States' species has a body length of two inches and leg span of about six inches. These spiders are stout-bodied and covered with hollow, needlelike, barbed hairs, especially on the abdomen. When disturbed, the hind legs are used to scrape off and throw very fine (fiberglass-like) abdominal hairs in the direction of danger, resulting in a remaining bald spot. A bald spot may also occur on the abdomen prior to the shedding of the skin. Hairs may cause a skin rash, allergic reaction and possibly anaphylactic shock to certain individuals.

Introduction
New or Old world Species
There are so many types of Tarantula in the world today with new species being identified every year makes the world of the Tarantula so interesting New World Species come from America and South America in Tropical and sub Tropical areas there is loads of species in say Mexico and for me thats where the true Tarantula origins from the Mexican Red Knee new world species differ from there cousins of the old world in they posess Urticating hairs which they throw at would be predators and my hand when I change water bowl etc I should wear rubber gloves as the hairs can be quite itchy and very uncomfortable whatever happens do not put you face near a hair kicker because if the hairs get in the eyes temporary blindness can occur. Old World Species These spiders range from Africa and Asia and do not have urticating hairs however they make up for it in aggression they have no scruples and will bite if felt threatened for me the most impressive spider in Africa is the King Baboon spider a very slow growing and long lived animal a true monster in the spider world the Cobalt Blue from Thailand is also very impressive a beautiful blue burrowing spider with a nasty attitude all old world Tarantulas are not recommended for beginners due to this aggression.

    Tarantulas
Tarantulas (family Theraphosidae) are very hairy, and among them are the largest of all spiders. One species, found in South America, has a body length of more than 3 inches (7.5 cm) and a 10-inch (25-cm) leg span. The largest tarantula found in the United States has a body about 2 inches (5 cm) long and a leg span of about 4 or 5 inches (10 or 12.5 cm). If handled roughly, tarantulas may inflict painful, but not fatal, wounds. Tarantulas are some of the world's largest spiders. What Do Tarantulas, Including Pinktoes, Look Like? Tarantulas have a body that is divided into two main parts—the abdomen (AB duh muhn) and the cephalothorax (SEHF uh loh THAWR aks or SEHF uh loh THOHR aks). The abdomen is the rounded part at the back of the tarantula that contains the animal’s organs. The cephalothorax is at the front of the tarantula, and it contains the mouthparts, including the chelicerae (kuh LIHS uh ree). The chelicerae are above the spider’s mouth opening, and the spider uses them to seize, crush, and kill its prey. Each chelicera ends in a sharp, hard, hollow fang. Eight eyes, eight legs, and two leglike structures called pedipalps are also connected to the cephalothorax.

    Tarantula
Tarantulas are spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae . They are characterized by having tarsi (feet) with two claws and claw tufts, called scopulae. When people who knew about the tarantulas emigrated to the Americas and discovered fearsomely large and hairy spiders in the New World, they bestowed the name "tarantula" on them. Those spiders belong to the Suborder Mygalomorphae , the Family Theraphosidae (Greek for thera "wild animal, beast" + phos "light") and the Family Dipluridae . They can be quite large. Tarantulas can be kept as house pets . Common species are Chilean rose hair tarantula and Mexican red-knee tarantula . A terrarium with an inch or two of damp vermiculite or a mixture of soil and sphagnum moss (but not with cedar shavings as they are toxic to many spiders) on bottom provides an ideal habitat. (Burrowing tarantulas will require a much deeper layer.) Tarantulas can be fed a variety of living animals (insects, small mice, small fish in the water bowl, and reptiles are on their menu). This web site gives an all-round guide to the housing, feeding and general care of the worlds largest spiders - the theraphosids or tarantulas.
Although focusing mainly on tarantulas, this site also offers an insight into the araneomorphs or 'true spiders' such as the wandering, huntsman, orb-web and wolf spiders.
There is no doubt that the fascination for tarantulas is growing worldwide and as a result, they are becoming more and more popular as pets. Gone are the days when people were inexperienced in their care and as time goes by, more facts are being discovered - all helping to dispel the popular myth of tarantulas being "deadly killers!"
The information contained on this site comes from over twenty years of personal experience with tarantulas and I hope the facts about their care and the problems that can occur (although avoidable) proves beneficial to those who own, or are thinking of owning, one of these large and beautiful spiders.

Tarantulas are the largest and most revered of all spiders, comprising just over 900 species in the mygalomorph family Theraphosidae. Theraphosa blondi, female Tarantulas are the largest and most revered of all spiders, comprising just over 900 species in the mygalomorph family Theraphosidae. The Venezuelan tarantula Theraphosa apophysis (Tinter 1991) attains a straightened diagonal leg span of just over 28 cm (11 inches), a little larger than a dinner plate. While not quite as long-legged, the female South American species Theraphosa blondi (Latreille 1804) has a heavier body with an abdomen that can equal the size of a tennis ball and have an impressive bodyweight of 125 grams (1/4 pound) with fangs that can be nearly 2 cm (3/4 inch) in length. One of the smallest known tarantulas, Aphonopelma paloma Prentice 1993, found in Arizona, has a total adult body length of 8 mm (1/3 inch). Rick West eating tarantulas Tarantulas have been the maligned victims of a great deal of popular lore that bely that they are generally mild mannered, handsomely colored and beneficial. Several cultures throughout the world catch, cook and eat the larger ground-dwelling tarantulas as a valuable nutritional supplement. I can tell you, from personal experience, that a cooked tarantula tastes similar to a prawn.
