The Setting
It's a Monday evening in Washington, D.C., as Richard Gephardt and Al Gore call their daily press conference. "This legislation is outrageous!" yells Gephardt. "Not only does this Extreme-Right-Wing (tm) bill passed today in Congress starve MILLIONS of school-children, but it also leaves the elderly without any health care! And worst of all, it allows a ten-day window for government-subsidized destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest! During Earth Day (tm)! This Radical Contract ON America (tm) must be stopped!" Several hours later, Newt Gingrich is asked about the consequences of this new legislation. "What?! Schoolkids?! Rain forest?! It was Term Limits Legislation! It has nothing to do with any of that!" But it's too late. The media has already reported what Gephardt said about the bill. And as we all know, if it's on the news, it must be true. Thus, plans to destroy the rain forest are begun. The starving of school children and the Kevorkianizing of the elderly are also begun, but that won't be chronicled here. (Note: Normally, President Clinton would have vetoed this legislation, but there was a rider involving immunity of elected officials from Bimbo Lawsuits (tm) and he was forced to sign it.) According to Gore, the bill allocates 50,000 Kronkites to the person who is responsible for bringing down the largest area of rain forest in the next ten days. Two people step forward for the challenge: Paul Bunyan, who needs the money for Blue Oxen Chow (tm) and his tanker-truck-a-day lager habit, and the Tasmanian Devil, who would buy 50,000 Kronkites worth of Hossenfeffah (tm).

As the youngest of the Looney Tunes, the Tasmanian Devil, or 'Taz' as he has come to be known, is generally portrayed as a dim-witted teenager-type with a notoriously short temper and little patience. He will eat anything and everything, with an appetite that seems to know no bounds. He is best known for his speech comprised mostly of grunts, growls and raspberries, and his ability to spin and bite through just about anything. In 1991, Taz got his own show

    Tasmanian Devil
Only from the island of Tasmania in Australia comes the Tasmanian Devil Sarcophilus harrisii ). They were named for the noises they make: the growl when looking for food, and the harsh screeching and screams when a group of devils is feeding on a carcass. Nocturnal animals, these noises are heard at night. During the day, Tasmanian devils shelter in caves, bushes, old wombat burrows, or hollow logs. They live in coastal scrub, woodlands, eucalypt forests, and agricultural areas. They are shy and timid animals. Tasmanian devils are the world's largest carnivorous marsupial. Their fur is black, though some have white markings on the chest, shoulder, or rump. Devils weigh 13 to 18 pounds and range from 23 to 26 inches in length. They have a large head with a wide jaw and have sharp teeth. Their pointy pink ears turn red when angry. Devils are scavengers, who eat any dead animals in the forest. It doesn’t matter how old or rotten the carcass is. Similar to hyenas, devils eat almost every part (bones, skin, skull). They also catch snakes, birds, rodents, lizards, small wallabies, and lamb.

Tasmanian Devils - Behavior
Talune Wildlife Park Tasmanian devils have an unwarranted reputation of being savage beasts. These creatures have got such a name for their threatening yawn and look. Moreover, this savageness is misconceived from their great variety of noises from harsh coughs to high pitch screeches, but in reality they scream rather from fear and uncertainty than from aggression. Often they use their voices to challenge other animals and minimize harmful fighting. High-pitch screams are used to establish dominance at feeding around a carcass. They sneeze before a fight, which is a spectacular bluff behavior after which one of the Tasmanian devils will surely back down. Tasmanian devils have to compete for everything: food, shelter and mating. The males are more aggressive than the females. When under stress, Tasmanian devils produce a strong odor. These animals are very shy and are seldom seen by people. Tasmanian devils are nocturnal animals and during the day they hide in the dens. If little food is available, the Tasmanian devil can travel up to 16 km along their well-defined trails in search for food. These animals are not territorial, but have home ranges. Social interactions are frequent during their feeding time, but usually Tasmanian devils are solitary. All adult Tasmanian devils have several dens within its home range, which they share with other animals.

Once inhabiting nearly the whole of mainland Australia, the Tasmanian Devils are now found only in Tasmania - the island state of Australia. Tasmanian Devils are marsupials and nocturnal animals, which prefer to live alone rather in groups. The habitat of these nocturnal animals includes forests, countryside and shrubs swamps of towns. The deafening growl and screech that Tasmanian Devils make while having a communal feeding of carcasses has earned them the name ‘Devils.’
Tasmanian Devils have a body covered with black fur along with white markings on the chest, rump and shoulder and at times on tail. The looks of the devils are similar to that of baby bears, and their tracks are in a diamond pattern. Tasmanian Devils can reach a top speed of 13 kilometers per hour. While the average males are around 2.5 feet in height, the females are around 2 feet, both the gender weigh around 12 to 18 pounds. The sense of hearing and sense of smell of the devils are very good, with a very sharp vision. Though they are carnivorous in their dietary habits, Tasmanian Devils are not good hunters. They mostly feed on dead animals, an eating habit which is common among the hyenas as well. From amphibians, to reptiles, birds, small mammals, kangaroos, wallabies, insects and possums these devils eat anything and everything. Tasmanian Devils are known as ‘mini-vacuum cleaners’ since they eat everything of their preys’ dead bodies including bones, fur, skin and skull. The devils are known to be noisy eaters while eating in groups.

The Tasmanian Devil is usually about one foot tall and 2 to 4 feet long including its tail. Their fur is usually black containing a white stripe located above their front legs. Also, the jaw of a Tasmanian Devil is very brawny allowing it to tear through the flesh of its prey. In addition, when they become irritated there ears turn bright red. Tasmanian Devils are marsupials which means they have a pouch in which their joeys or young develop in for a period of time. Habitat: Tasmanian Devils are now only located wild on the island of Tasmania, which is a state in Australia. Many are found near human settlements where they scavenge for food. Devils are nocturnal so they spend most of the day resting, in a state called Tupor, in caves and hollow logs. Tupor is when an animal drops its body temperature to match its surroundings to conserve energy. Also, the Tasmanian Devil has a home range of 25 to 50 acres in which it lives in for its entire life. Reproduction: The Tasmanian Devil reproduces sexually. They mostly mate during March and May (their breeding season). A female Devil’s gestation period is about 21 weeks. After, a litter of approximately four joeys develop in the mothers pouch 2-4 weeks. At six months the joeys are old enough to go out on their own. After two years the joeys are mature enough to reproduce. They usually live for five to eight years.
