THE TASMANIAN DEVIL STORY
Tasmanian devils are meat eating marsupials.
While now found only on the island of Tasmania they once roamed widely across Australia and on islands around the coast.
Recently Tasmanian devils have suffered greatly from a mysterious cancer that appears to be passed directly from animal to animal by biting.
The disease causes terrible tumours around the face and is always fatal, killing the host about five months after the first signs of the disease.
Around half the wild devil population has succumbed in the last 10 years.
Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park, which is the only wildlife centre in an isolated disease-free area, is involved in a number of research projects to help solve the problem.
(See our Friends and News pages)
Devils have very strong jaws capable of crushing large bones. They mostly eat carrion.
Devils also are famous for their snarling aggressive behaviour, especially at feeding and mating time. Unlike most other pouched mammals devils carry up to four young in their "marsupiums". Up to 15 neonates - new born - only the size of a grain of wheat are born but just four can be fed so it is a case of survival of the fittest from the start of life. The gestation is an amazingly short 19 days.

Tasmanian Devils
Size (Body) Male - 650mm Female - 570mm (Tail) -250mm Weight Male - 8kg
Female - 6kg Status - Common
Tasmanian Devils are a small, dog size, carnivorous marsupials found only in Tasmania, the island state of Australia. Tasmanian Devils are black in colour often with white flashes on the chest and the rump. Like most of Australia animals the devils are nocturnal, hunting by night and sleeping during the day. Devils are scavengers, however they will kill, eating anything from an old boot, grubs and insects, small reptiles, birds, eggs and mammals as large as wallaby. Tasmanian devils are known for their very powerful jaws having one of the strongest bites for an animal of their size
Female Tasmanian Devils have a backward opening pouch or marsupium, that has four nipples in it, so they can only raise four young an a time. The females come in season in March (autumn or the fall, in the southern hemisphere.) the young are born 31 days after mating and as many as 20 young may be born, it is only the first four that make it to the nipples in the pouch that will survive. The young 'joeys' stay in the pouch for about 15 weeks and are dependent on the female for about another 15 weeks. Tasmanian Devils are found all over Tasmania, in dry and rain forest habitats. They live in hollow logs, small caves and can dig small cave type 'borrows'. Devils only live for about 5-6 years in the wild. The species is secure in the wild and has probably increased since European settlement.

Tasmanian Devils The Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisi) is Australia's largest living carnivorous marsupial (previously it was the thylacine ,or Tasmanian Tiger, now presumed extinct) and, since it's extinction from the mainland at least 600 years ago, it is found exclusively on the island state of Tasmania. Since 1941 it has been a protected species but a (presumed) new and contagious disease is threatening the population's long term viability
Length 550-650mm (f-m), weight 7-9kg (f-m), life span 6 years in the wild, longer in captivity.
Scientific name
The scientific name means Harris's meat lover, named after the naturalist George Harris who wrote the first published description of the Tasmanian Devil in 1807. The name has subsequently been changed to S. laniarius but the original name is still widely used. It is most closely related to quolls.

Tasmanian Devils The Australia Zoo is home to four very cute but rascally Tasmanian devils. The four enjoy wading in their waterfall ponds and basking on rocky escarpments inside their matching enclosures. Tasmanian devils are the largest carnivorous marsupials alive today. They assumed the title when the last thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, died in captivity in 1936. Today they are only found in Tasmania, but fossil evidence shows that devils once lived on mainland Australia. Scientists suspect that dingoes, which are an introduced species, drove both devils and thylacines to extinction on the mainland. Although Tasmanian devils have been depicted as brutish killing machines in cartoons, real Tasmanian devils are scavengers, not hunters. They use their sharp teeth, heavy molars and powerful jaws to rip through hide and crush bone and gristle of dead animals that they find while foraging. Tasmanian devils have an excellent sense of smell, which they use to locate carrion at night. Though solitary by nature, many individuals will converge on a single carcass to feed. A group of feeding devils will growl, snarl and screech at one another to establish dominance, creating quite the spectacle!

Tasmanian Devils are in trouble and in some areas they may go the way of the Tasmanian Tiger if something isn't done soon. The culprit is a cancer most likely caused by a virus which can kill up to 90% of the adults in some populations.
    Transcript
Robyn Williams: Well, the Tasmanian Devils are not very well as you may have heard on Radio National Breakfast with Peter Thomson this week. And it's a worry, not only for the Devils themselves but the possibility that those feral foxes, which some idiot released in Tasmania recently, will have fewer natural enemies. There are now it's estimated about fifty foxes loose and they're howling across the southern landscape. Back to the Devils which Androo Kelly has in a wildlife park at Trowunna, which is the Aboriginal name for Tasmania. Androo Kelly: Oh, we do a lot of things with Tasmanian Devils. Because we're a location within their own environment we're able to do a lot more natural behaviours, breeding, rehabilitation of injured orphans, releasing them into the wild excess stock working very closely with the zoological industry to try and improve the whole process on Tasmanian Devil management. Almost a hyperactive nocturnal animal, it's been living in small box type situations in the zoo industry for many years, we're addressing those issues and just de-mything the myth that surrounds that most amazing carnivore of Tasmania. Robyn Williams: What are the myths?

GEORGE NEGUS: G'day. Welcome to a special program focusing on the future of the country's animal species. September 7 next week is National Threatened Species Day. Tonight, a gander at why some of our species are so low in numbers that their very survival is in doubt. Not a new problem, by any means, but definitely one to revisit. We'll also be looking at good animal habitats in our zoos. But first, the Tasmanian devil is one of this country's native animal icons but apparently, it's been struck by a shocking cancer that's decimating the adult devil population.
SIMON WATT, REPORTER: Meet the world's largest carnivorous marsupial, the Tasmanian devil. It's the Tasmanian icon with a somewhat undeserved reputation for fierceness.
