Epithet - Definition
Linguistics
An epithet (Greek epitheton ) is a descriptive word or phrase, often metaphoric , that is essentially a reduced or condensed appositive . Epithets are sometimes attached to a person's name, such as Richard the Lionheart or Alexander the Great . In contemporary usage, epithet often means an abusive or defamatory phrase. There are specific types of epithets, such as the kenning , also known as periapsis, which appears in works such as Beowulf. An example of a kenning would be the term whale-road Not every adjective is an epithet, even worn . An epithet is linked to its noun by long-established usage and not otherwise employed. Sometimes the epithet is required to distinguish, say Charles the Fat from Charles the Bald A Greek deity's epithet may reflect a particular aspect of that god's role, as Apollo Musagetes is " Apollo , [as] leader of the Muses ." Alternatively the epithet may identify a particular and localized aspect of the god, sometimes already ancient during the classical epoch of Greece. A goddess with many such epithets is Demeter Epithets are characteristic of the style of ancient epic poetry , most notably that of Homer . See epithets in Homer . When James Joyce uses the phrase "the snot-green sea" he is playing on Homer's familiar epithet "the wine-dark sea" with a kind of mock-epithet.

Burge Department of Biology, Duke University, Box 90338, Durham, NC 27708 email: dob7@duke.edu Abstract. —The Pheidole californica complex comprises three closely related and partly sympatric species of seed harvesting ants restricted to the western Nearctic region. An analysis of morphological variation in the minor workers and major workers (soldiers) reveals that these species are more variable than previously thought. Nevertheless, morphological characteristics were uncovered that are consistently diagnostic for each species. Pheidole clementensis 'Gregg may be distinguished from both Pheidole californica Mayr and Pheidole creightoni Gregg by the diagonal rather than longitudinal rugulae between the clypeus and the eye in lateral view. The closely related P. californica

Taxonomy is the practice and science of classification. The word finds its roots in the Greek taxis (meaning 'order' or 'arrangement') and nomos (meaning 'law' or 'science'). Taxonomy uses taxonomic units, known as taxa (singular taxon In addition, the word is also used as a count noun a taxonomy , or taxonomic scheme, is a particular classification ("the taxonomy of ..."), arranged in a hierarchical structure. Typically this is organized by supertype-subtype relationships, also called generalization-specialization relationships, or less formally, parent-child relationships. In such an inheritance relationship, the subtype by definition has the same properties, behaviors, and constraints as the supertype plus one or more additional properties, behaviors, or constraints. For example: car is a subtype of vehicle , so any car is also a vehicle, but not every vehicle is a car. Therefore a type needs to satisfy more constraints to be a car than to be a vehicle. Another example: any shirt is also a piece of clothing, but not every piece of

C. Diversity - There are many kinds of plants including mosses, liverworts, hornworts and the tracheophytes. Tracheophytes are vascular plants, such as ferns, horsetails, flowering plants (= angiosperms) and conifers (=gymnosperms). A. Taxonomy
The study of plant classification. Classification is putting objects into groups (such as the Linnean hierarchy below). Classification involves/requires naming (nomenclature), describing (assigning features to a taxon), and identifying (determining that an unknown element is identical to a known one) species. Another definition of taxonomy that I like is that taxonomy is the science of documenting biodiversity (Keogh, 1995). The term taxonomy was originally coined by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle in 1813 (Stuessy; 1990, 1994).

Wide Host Range of Fruitfly
The fruit fly Bactrocera correcta (Saunders), is an important pest of fruit trees. It has a wide host range and can cause damage to young fruits as well as mature ones. The lynx spider, Oxyopes lineatipes , (C.L. Koch) (Araneae, Oxyopidae) is a predator of B. correcta
Predation by LYNX Spiders
Lynx spiders inhabit weeds, and also a range of crops including rice, orchids, mungbean, sweet potato, okra, tangerine and pummelo. The taxonomy, biology and predation efficiency of lynx spider were studied.
Predation Efficiency
Predation efficiency was studied in the laboratory. The study had a CRD design, with nine treatments and 10 replications. The treatments differed according to the growth stage, sex and density of the spiders. One treatment had young male spiders at an early growth stage (6.5 mm in length), one had young females (7.5 mm in length). Other treatments had 1, 2 or 3 males, or 1, 2 or 3 females per box. Spiders in each treatment were put in a plastic box (15x 29 x 8.5 cm) with seven-day-old mungbean seedlings. They were provided with 10 fruit flies (
