Parent Conference Considerations
Professionally conducted parent-teacher conferences can prove a most valuable strategy for improving student classroom behavior as well as enhancing learning. Here are some ideas used by successful teachers to reap the maximum benefit from parent-teacher conferences.
  • Before the conference, plan what you hope to accomplish. What information do you want to share with the parent? What problems need solving? Do not overwhelm the parent. Settle on no more than two or three concerns to be addressed. A laundry list of complaints will only discourage or alienate them.
  • If you are requesting the conference in response to a specific problem with the child, allow some time to cool off before meeting with the parent. You'll be less emotionally charged and more objective after a couple of days. Remember, you are a professional educator.

    Parent Teacher Interviews/Conferences
    From Sue
    See More About:
zSB(3,3) Conducting Effective Parent/Teacher Conferences It is extremely important to have good working relationships between parents and teachers. A parent is really the child's first teacher and critical to student success is the involvement of the parent. It is critical that both parent and teacher know that the goals for the child are indeed shared goals, both teacher and parent want what is best for the child/student. Parents of struggling students are already overwhelmed and often have unpleasant experiences with the parent/teacher conference. It is extremely important to keep the doors open and welcome parents to share in the educational goals of the student. How can you ensure that you have a productive Parent Teacher Meeting/Conference? Follow these tips:
    • Give your parents plenty of notice about the upcoming conference. Provide them with a few things they could discuss at the interview - for instance, tell them you would like to know about the child's likes and dislikes, how homework is handled at home and what their attitudes towards school or specific subjects is like. Remember, many of your students come from a single parent home, you'll need to see if they would like to meet together for the interview or have separate interviews.

I instruct the parents to mark their top 3 preferences with a 1, 2, and 3, and to put an X on any times that will NOT work. Once all parents have returned the forms, I can put together a schedule that works for everyone. I can schedule in breaks for myself where needed, and accommodate parents' needs at the same time. News From The Classroom
It is wonderful to see the children return from their Spring break energized, enthusiastic and eager to learn. It was an exciting time with the Olympics in town so it was a much needed break for all. It is always amazing when the children return after a break to see them interact with their environment like they have never been away. The inviting Montessori materials and order of the classroom is always a welcome place for the children. Everyone is adjusting well to the teacher change and will still get to see Mrs. Muqtader as she will be our relief teacher and is filling in various mornings and afternoons. This is our last term at school and full of events and trips and also getting ready to say goodbye to our Extended Day students, some that have been with us for four years. We look forward to an exciting few months and watching the continued growth of your children. Thank you everyone for making the effort to be on time . . . . what a difference!! Please keep it up until the end of June.
    Observations/Teacher Parent Conferences

    Parent-Teacher Conferences
Ever since I began teaching, I've gone to meetings, received memos, and been offered countless tidbits of wisdom about how to deal with open school night. Usually, they're horrifying, and I imagine the parents will arrive heavily armed to threaten our lives. Or perhaps they'll simply kill us all and be done with it. However, even when I taught special ed., that sort of thing never happened.
As an ESL teacher, I don't get that many parents. Perhaps they're worried we can't find a translator. At the table next to mine a woman was explaining to my colleague that she was pushing her son, who'd been here for six months, to become a pharmacist. Therefore, it was absolutely imperative that he score 2100 on the SATs. My colleague kept trying to tell her that perhaps first, he ought to try passing ESL 2 with an 80 rather than a 75.
I had a very different conflict. A very good beginning student of mine arrived with her mom and her brother, who appeared all of six years old. He spoke English very well.
    "I'm Charles!" he declared.
