Parent-teacher conferences have historically been a scheduled annual event, where parent meets with a teacher and the teacher informs the parent of the child's progress or lack thereof. More recently, research has shown that parent involvement has a significant influence on student performance. The new focus is toward promoting a partnership between parents and teachers, where there is a cooperative relationship between the two parties working together to help the child achieve success. There has also been a trend toward student-led parent-teacher conferences, involving the student as at least a participant, and frequently a leader of the discussion.
Background
Establishing a positive relationship with parents must be achieved at the beginning of the school year. Most frequently, teachers' first opportunity to meet with parents is at the parent-teacher conference, and these should be scheduled as early in the school year as possible, to develop trust between parents and teachers. It is a prime opportunity for teachers to gain cooperation of parents in the education of their children (Rosenthal). Recently, an educational push has been towards student-led conferences. The (very) basic idea is that students would attend conferences with both teahcer and parents and would attempt to explain what is going on in the classroom. The teacher could step in and annotate the student-led discussion with praise and/or corrections. Would this impact parent/teacher relationships? Would this impact parent/child relationships? These questions are yet to be answered.

A parent teacher conference helps to communicate to parents the areas their child are excelling in and to give them specific ideas of how to improve upon their childs performance in school. Teacher parent conferences should be used as a platform to make a lasting bond with the parent to increase the likelihood of academic success for their child. Teacher parent conferences should not be used as a venue to acknowledge the flaws and inabilities of students, but as a stepping stone to foster improvement within each child. A few helpful hints for teachers to follow when conducting teacher parent conferences are listed below.
Acceptable behavior during teacher parent conferences:
  • Greet parents with warmth and admiration. They are taking time out of their busy schedule to meet with you. Summarize the positives before beginning on the particular problems the child is exhibiting in class. Formal dress should be worn during teacher parent conferences. This will reflect the meetings importance and help win respect from parents.

Student-Teacher-Parent Conferences (Celebration of Learning) November Conference Period
The first conference period will be done with all parents. The conferences will provide opportunities to share children's portfolios and time will be provided for parental involvement. Children will be included in these conferences. We feel this is the best way of providing parents with an understanding of what their child is doing in school. There will also be an opportunity to discuss learning goals for your child. We provide a written report for students and parents at conference time. March Conference Period
This communication will occur any time during the month of March. The format will be similar to the November conference period for all students K-6. Parents will be personally contacted by their child's teacher. Once again, children will be involved in their own learning conference.

Teacher Tips for Good Parent-Teacher Conference Meetings Help Parents to Stay Involved
From Robin McClure , former About.com Guide
    See More About:
zSB(3,3) Schools and daycares alike often plan parent-teacher conferences at least twice a year, if not more, to help parents stay connected with what their child is learning. These meetings also provide quality time for parents and teachers to get to know each other on a more personal level. However, parents often become nervous about the notion of a one-on-one conference time with their child's instructional leader and sometimes are unprepared to make the most of the scheduled time. That's too bad, because these conferences can truly strengthen communications and foster a clearer understanding so that parents and teachers can partner to help a child achieve success (whether it is school or even daycare) for the year.

    Entry #15: Teacher-parent conferences -
meaningful discussions or time for revenge?
Report card conferences were held this week. In our district this means three half-days for students. When we have half-days, our periods are only 30 minutes long and we stop after the 6th period.
The kids seem to think the half-days mean free time. Teachers all seem to agree that these three half-days are more exhausting than a week of full days.
On the surface, it's easy to see that we're tired because the short periods make the week feel more like babysitting than teaching. It's also frustrating when families don't keep their appointments, arriving early, late, or not at all.
In my new position as a prep teacher, hardly anyone wanted to see me. I did stop a few folks to talk and I helped people find the "real" teachers they were looking for the advisors, the keepers of the report cards.
At first I was just feeling kind of left out, but then I started wondering about the whole set up. I really started thinking about the conferences and what I'd like to get out of them, and I realized that I've never even had that discussion with any of my colleagues, students or parents.
Sure, we've commiserated about the no-shows. We've vented about the time wasted in dragging the process out for three days. We've even sketched out our proposal for a one-day conference plan, one day without classes which lasts from early morning to late afternoon.
