OUTLINE OF A TEACHING PORTFOLIO
BACKGROUND REFERENCES
INTRODUCTION
A "teaching portfolio" is a compilation of information about a faculty member's teaching, made by that faculty member, often for use in consideration for tenure or promotion. It is not, in itself, an instrument for teaching evaluation, but a vehicle for presenting information which may include results of evaluations and which may itself contribute to evaluation. It can therefore be selective, emphasizing the positiveto serve as a showcase for the faculty member's achievements in teaching, not necessarily a comprehensive or balanced picture of everything. Purposes for the teaching portfolio include: provision of data for personnel decisions, including tenure and promotion; supplying data for aggregate information that might be communicated to, for example, legislative bodies; support of cases for internal or external awards; and, perhaps most importantly, provision to the faculty member of special and significant opportunities for reflection about his or her teaching. There are other possibilities. The very fact that the teaching portfolio is now in place should serve to underscore the increasing emphasis on the value of teaching at WSU and in higher education nationally. At WSU, this emphasis will be expressed in other ways, circumstances permitting.

SUMMARY This resource volume, written especially for teachers of introductory chemistry courses, is in a ready-to-use format that will enable instructors to integrate materials chemistry into their curriculum. The book collects a critical mass of text, demonstrations, and laboratory experiments. The first ten chapters present a general introduction to solids; numerous easy-to-do teacher demonstrations are integrated into the material. The second part of the volume consists of fifteen laboratory experiments for students. Examples from cutting-edge research, as well as everyday life, spark student interest while illustrating the basic ideas that are important to an understanding of chemistry.

What We Observed in Teaching General Semantics
Without doubt you have noticed evidence of the widespread interest of teachers in general semantics. It is indicated by the number of articles appearing in professional journals, the frequent references to it in textbooks, and the popularity of lectures and of courses dealing with the subject.
Successful teachers have always applied the principles of general semantics in their teaching methods, but too generally, the earliest opportunity for pupils to experience the benefits of a program of direct training has been at the college level. This question has been asked: If it were possible to adapt a system of semantic training for children, could it be given at the elementary level?
In addition, student teachers used our general semantics course in other Chicago schools of different economic, cultural, and racial backgrounds. Experienced teachers, supervisors, and administrators who visited these classes, as well as the classes at Nettelhorst School, commented on the enthusiasm, the wide participation, the careful listening, and most important of all, the ability of the pupils to apply what they had learned to real-life situations.

Teaching General Chemistry
(An Alternative Method) Touching upon Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry.
The great pedagogical principle is to lead the student from the familiar to the unfamiliar. In grammar school science the students have learned about such fundamental concepts as atoms, and about living beings including DNA and genes. Thus, let's see how we can start with that foundation and do a classic reductionist approach, no unlike figuring out the principles of a clock by taking it about and seeing how each of the parts works. "Here is a tree. Is it one or more than one atom? What are the parts of a tree trunk biochemically? Ah, cellulose. What must cellulose look like - round and granular or long and fibrous? What happens when you chew on a popsickle stick for a long time? Ah, long, and fibrous! On the blackboard, let's draw one of them, represented by a line. Now this line might also represent a muscle fiber, or a DNA molecule. Is it one or more than one atom?" Thus the concepts of polyatomic structures are imprinted.
Next we can turn to two other grammar school science concepts - magnetism and electricity. Although there is a great deal of fuzziness in understanding, the students already know about the two magnetic poles, N and S, and that we have electricity in "positive" and "negative" forms, such as we seemingly have in our household sockets. Combining these two concepts we can put some plusses and minuses onto the line on the blackboard, and introduce another word that they may have heard - "ion" - from TV ads about a type of air purifiers. But now you can refine their concept by mentioning that the charged line on the blackboard now represents a "polyatomic" "ion" - actually, a polyionic molecule.
