Effective Teaching Effective Learning Effective Speaking Our goals for student learning are complementary—that students not settle for just learning the "stuff" or enough "stuff" for a decent grade. They should be training their minds and sensibilities for a lifetime responsibility of critical, independent thought and commitment to personal and community goals. They should have high expectations of their own efforts and of their teachers' efforts. They should see learning as extending far beyond the classroom to most of what they experience.

Enhancing education through dialogue, innovation, and assessment
Center for Teaching and Learning to Support Educational Excellence
AUSTIN, Texas — The Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment at The University of Texas at Austin was renamed the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), effective Aug. 16, as part of an initiative by Executive Vice President and Provost Steven Leslie to strengthen the division's role in supporting educational excellence. Leslie said the new name, selected with input from faculty, staff, students and administrators, will employ a new tag line that reads, "The Center for Teaching and Learning: Enhancing education through dialogue, innovation, and assessment." The initiative included moving the division from Continuing and Innovative Education to the office of the executive vice president and provost, and appointing Dr. Harrison Keller, vice provost for higher education policy, as executive director for the division, effective July 26. Bethel Teaching General Hospital SEARCH: A modest beginning would naturally implicate a slow stride and a tumultuous progress in the general mind. But then the fact defies the expectations and we often see meagre beginnings ascend to cherishable heights in a fascinating way. Suffices to quote the old Chinese proverb “a mile's journey begins with one stride.” A stride made with vision and winning the helping hands of others. Soldering the joint

Common faults
... Return to David Lauder's home page Health and Safety A soldering iron heats up to about 370 degrees Celsius (700 F). Take care to avoid burning yourself. Electrical solder contains resin flux. There is a risk that this could spit in your eye so goggles should be worn. When the flux burns, it produces smoke. To avoid inhaling this, a fan or fume extractor should be used to direct the smoke away from you. Electrical solder is normally an alloy of 60% tin and 40% lead. After handling solder wire, wash your hands before eating or touching food. Preparation Before you solder, the PCB track and the component leads must be bright, clean and free of dirt or oxide. Bend the component leads at a 45 degree angle to prevent the components from falling out during soldering. The components should be fitted flush with the PCB. Trim the leads before soldering. Bending the leads right over flush with the board gives a stronger joint but the component will be harder to remove if you make a mistake and care must be taken that the bent-over lead does not touch an adjacent track. For an IC or IC socket, bend at least two diagonally opposite corner pins over to prevent the device from falling out. To solder successfully, the soldering iron bit must first be 'tinned'. To 'tin' the bit of the soldering iron, melt a small amount of solder onto it. It should flow onto the bit producing a bright shiny surface. If the solder will not flow onto the bit, the bit needs cleaning by wiping it on the wet sponge. When 'tinned', wipe excess solder off on the wet sponge. You do not need to 'tin' the bit before every joint but you should re-tin it if it has gone dull when the iron has not been used for a few minutes.

Overview
This page is a means of sharing information about the teaching of the concepts of programming languages, especially undergraduate survey courses and courses about programming language semantics. It is hoped that the information shared will include homework and test problems, which will make everyone's life a bit easier. (It may be best not to allow access to solutions from outside your college or university, however.) This page will not include information about courses aimed at teaching some specific programming language (as a means of teaching programming skills). Also outside the scope of this page will be information about courses in compiler construction. (I'm hoping someone else will volunteer to keep such pages.) If you wish to share information about one or more of your courses please see the information about how to contribute

ABSTRACT
While the examples of pseudoscience are a very small portion of these traditional courses in general and analytical chemistry, they will undoubtedly be some of the most memorable particulars that the students recall in future years. And if the examination of scientific foibles by these students helps to avoid future cases of pathological science on their part, we have gained much with little investment. INTRODUCTION This paper briefly describes a four-level approach to using pseudoscience and pathological science as tools to further educational goals in second-semester general chemistry and analytical chemistry courses. It provides detailed information about five specific areas of pseudoscience, pathological science, or anomaly investigations that are applicable to chemical education, and describes two student special projects and student experiences at a conference on controversial research. A compilation of further instances of pseudoscience, pathological science and anomaly investigations, and discussions of specific uses, can be found on the Reference Page
The four-level approach involved the inclusion of pseudoscientific topics in (a) lecture, discussion, and examinations; (b) demonstrations; (c) laboratory experiments; and (d) student attendance at a conference where controversial research was presented by mainstream and fringe scientists. Levels (a) and (b) were used in both general chemistry and analytical chemistry classes, while levels (c) and (d) were used only in analytical chemistry, and only for the most motivated and highest achieving students.
