Teaching Chicano Literature: An Historical Approach
by Raymund Paredes
University of California at Los Angeles

I'll begin with a definition of Chicano literature. I use the term Chicano to refer to people of Mexican ancestry who have resided permanently in the United States for an extended period. Chicanos can be native-born citizens or Mexican-born immigrants who have adapted to life in the United States. For me, Chicano and Mexican American are interchangeable, although some scholars would argue, not without justification, that the terms are distinct, the former connoting a certain degree of cultural awareness and political activism about which the latter is relatively neutral. In any event, to my mind Chicano or Mexican American writing includes those works in which a writer's sense of ethnic identity ( chicanismo ) animates his or her work manifestly and fundamentally, often through the presentation of Chicano characters, cultural situations, and patterns of speech. As a distinctive body of writing, Chicano literature is relatively young, having taken shape in the generation or so after the conclusion of the Mexican War in 1848. But the cultural forces that gave rise to Chicano literature date from the late sixteenth century when the Spanish

Introduction
The picture below is a prettified form of colour wheel. It illustrates primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary colours in an aesthetic setting. The colours in this colour wheel are based on the actual responses of the eye to colour. The construction is referred to as a Super Tangram (for which patent is pending). The idea is derived from a simpler form, the tangram, which is known in China as the seven board of wisdom or cunning. Hover your mouse pointer over a colour to see its name 1 Red

94. Phonics 4 Piano - Pianimals - Music School - Piano Teacher Books And Lessons
and ordering information for this package of books to teach piano to the children.......
http://www.pianimals.com/
PHONICS 4 PIANO is a breakthrough way to play the piano or keyboard while preparing your child to read music! PHONICS 4 PIANO is based on decades of piano-teaching experience with thousands of children around the world now successfully playing the piano because it is easy and fun while they are learning. HOW IS PHONICS 4 PIANO DIFFERENT? We do NOT teach the music staff first. This has 2 advantages...children who know their finger numbers and learn where to place them on the keys can almost immediately play familiar songs. The second is that children are not overwhelmed since only one concept is presented at a time. Children develop a great sense of self confidence as they learn to play familiar songs. This motivates them to practice more and they learn to read the music staff at their own pace step-by-step. Visit our Online Store to learn more about our PHONICS 4 PIANO products (Books, CDs, Piano worksheets and games, packages and more).

Delivering a Lecture
[From the hard copy book Tools for Teaching by Barbara Gross Davis; Jossey-Bass Publishers: San Francisco, 1993. Linking to this book chapter from other websites is permissible. However, the contents of this chapter may not be copied, printed, or distributed in hard copy form without permission.] Lecturing is not simply a matter of standing in front of a class and reciting what you know The classroom lecture is a special form of communication in which voice, gesture, movement, facial expression, and eye contact can either complement or detract from the content. No matter what your topic, your delivery and manner of speaking immeasurably influence your students' attentiveness and learning. Use the following suggestions, based on teaching practices of faculty and on research studies in speech communication, to help you capture and hold students' interest and increase their retention. General Strategies Watch yourself on videotape. Often we must actually see our good behaviors in order to exploit them and see our undesirable behaviors in order to correct them. If you want to improve your public speaking skills, viewing a videotape of yourself can be an invaluable way to do so. See "Watching Yourself on Videotape."
