Talking to Teens about Addiction
Frequently family members think that their child may not have an alcohol or drug problem. Another issue may be, how could this have happened to our family? We are good parents and love our children. There is no single answer for parents that struggle with an addicted teenager.
Drugs and alcohol kill the pain of an ordinary mundane life; they destroy the physical and emotional pain by changing the addict’s perception of reality. Drugs and alcohol make the drug addict or alcoholic numb to the pain, unhappiness, or hopelessness that their life has become.
A common definition of addiction is, “The loss of control and compulsive use of mind-altering chemicals coupled with the inability to stop the use of the fact that such use is causing problems with one’s life. Addiction can be physical and/or psychological dependence of a chemical substance.” If you are not sure that your teenager is in this category, the following tips can be used for reaching out to a young person you think may have a problem.
1. Trust your instincts. If you feel that a member of your family is in trouble, there is probably a reason you feel this way. This is not wrong; it only shows that you are concerned.

Teen Addiction Causes
About Teen Addiction: Teen Addiction causes and is caused by many problems including:
- Unhappiness - Crime - Divorce - Major illness - Even death What are the underlying causes of Teen Addiction? When we take drugs, either for medical purposes or recreation, there is a benefit or reward that we are trying to achieve. For example pain medication is intended to bring relief to an injured or stressed area of our body. The beginning stages of Teen Addiction causes us to crave more and to use more. The unintended consequences of that is our need to take more and more of the drug to get the same result. Teen Addiction causes the pathways inside the brain to be altered. Physical changes in the nerve cells are brought on by the drug. These cells (neurons) communicate with each other releasing neurotransmitters into the gaps or synapses between the nerve cells. This makes some drugs are more addictive than others. There are several other factors that contribute to Teen Addiction. Well go into greater detail on another page, but for now the major factors are ones genetic makeup, personality and peer pressure. Again well explain these as we go along.

12. Teen Addiction
Teen Addiction is a growing epidemic and one that seems to have hit every sector of society. Teen addiction includes both substances and behavior.

Teen Addiction
Teen addiction tends to side track the normal developmental processes that should take place during the teenage years. For teenagers, life should be about developing an individual identity, finding their place among peers, and establishing loyal friendships. Adolescence is a time for trying new things. Teens use drugs for many reasons, including curiosity, because it feels good, to reduce stress, to feel grown up or to fit in. It is difficult to know which teens will experiment and stop and which will develop serious problems. When teenager's enthusiastic spirit gets sidetracked by drugs, something quite unpleasant is in store for them.
Teen addictions and drugs are very deceptive. All drugs—nicotine, alcohol , inhalants, prescription drugs, and illegal substances— entice the teen user. Some seem to offer a sense of belonging or sophistication, popularity, or a novel experience. Others offer euphoria, relaxation, stimulation, or a "high." Although drugs may actually deliver on that promise for a while, eventually teens who abuse drugs find themselves experiencing the negative effects of drug use. Aside from the more harmful physical effects of teen addictions, teenagers expose themselves to misfortunes such as: depression, loss of driving privileges, public humiliation, reduced social status, and reduced academic failure leading to less future opportunities, etc
Teen addictions
may come about in various ways. Teenagers may try legal and illegal drugs. Experimentation with drugs during adolescence happens frequently. Unfortunately, teenagers often don’t make the connection between their actions today and the consequences tomorrow. Often they feel indestructible and immune to the problems that others experience.

Teen Addiction - It's No Game
Interview with Dr. Phil
Platform Statement
I would like to address teen addiction as my platform. I would like to focus specifically on video game addiction in teens. I feel like this is a true concern in our society today and that a seemingly innocent activity can, if not monitored properly, lead to an addictive pattern and spill into other forms of addiction. I will create awareness to my platform by educating people on this topic. It is important to stress that this is a growing issue and concern. The ways I plan on doing this are connecting with the teenagers and their parents through their schools, volunteering at various facilities that work with the teenage population and setting up a website that parents can refer to for information and help. I hope to change attitudes among the teenage population by showing them that there is a balance between physical activity, video game time and school and family time. If this can be achieved then addiction will not happen. By speaking to carious groups that involve families I can spread my message about not only dealing with it when it is already an addictive behavior but how to prevent it in the early stages or even before it happens. I hope to be able to raise awareness on many levels because teem addiction occurs everywhere. Locally I hope to speak to kids with their parents and increase their awareness on this issue. On the state level it is important to convince those who govern us that this is a legitimate issue the needs to be addressed and to have strong laws in place that will help and support parents in preventing this from becoming an addiction. Nationally I can raise awareness through my website. I intend to set up my website so that if at any time anyone, including parents and teenagers, search the internet on any issue concerning teen addiction, video game use or parental-child relationships, my website will be available for their use and will guide them to further references for help throughout the country so they can get more information and help no matter where they live.
