    • Keen competition is expected for many jobs, particularly in large metropolitan areas, because of the large number of jobseekers attracted by the glamour of this industry. Job prospects will be best for applicants with a college degree in broadcasting, journalism, or a related field, and relevant experience, such as work at college radio and television stations or internships at professional stations. In this highly competitive industry, broadcasters are less willing to provide on-the-job training and instead seek candidates who can perform the job immediately. Many entry-level positions are at smaller broadcast stations; consequently, workers often must change employers, and sometimes relocate, in order to advance.

    A brief history of television
The fundamental principles for television was first described in the 1800's. In 1884 Paul Nipkow obtained a patent on an opto-mechanical method of transmitting images: the Nipkow disk, a rotating disk which had 24 small holes along a spiral line. This allowed scanning the image line by line. The first practical TV transmissione were performed by John Logie Baird in 1926 (30 lines/frame, 5 frames/s). Baird too used an optomechanical method. The first electronic image tube was invented by Vladimir Zworykin, who also invented the first TV camera tube, the "iconoscope". BBC started the first regular TV broadcasts (405 lines/frame, 25 frames/s) in England 1936 - that system was in use until 1986. WW II stopped TV development, but after the war many other countries started TV broadcasts. France used an 819 line system for many years, but most European countries did choose a 625 line system. In USA a 525 line system was, and still is, used.
The very first experimental colour TV broadcasts were performed in 1928, by Baird in England and H.E. Ives in USA. The USA was first in starting regular colour TV broadcasts, in 1953. Japan was second, starting in 1960 using the american NTSC TV broadcast system. In 1965 Europe failed to agree on one colour TV broadcast system: France went SECAM, eastern Europe decided on "a variety of SECAM", while most of the remainder of Europe decided to use PAL. England and Germany started regular colour TV broadcasts in 1967. By 1970 regular colour TV broadcasts had started in most European countries.

For the Canadian term used for a type of minor television network, see television system Broadcast television systems are encoding or formatting standards for the transmission and reception of analog television signals. Today, there are three main analog broadcast television systems in use around the world. These are NTSC PAL , or SECAM . These systems have several components, including a set of technical parameters for the broadcast signal, a system for encoding color, and possibly a system for encoding multi-channel audio. In digital television , all of these elements are combined in a single digital transmission system.

All but one analog television system began as monochrome systems. Each country, faced with local political, technical, and economic issues, adopted a color system which was grafted onto an existing monochrome system, using gaps in the video spectrum (explained below) to allow color transmission information to fit in the existing channels allotted. The grafting of the color transmission standards onto existing monochrome systems permitted existing monochrome television receivers predating the change over to color television to continue to be operate as monochrome television. Because of this compatibility requirement, color standards added a second signal to the basic monochrome signal, which carries the color information. The color information is called

PPL (for sound recordings) and VPL (for music videos) provide a simple “one-stop” shop where a licence can be obtained covering the rights to copy, broadcast and stream sound recordings and music videos included within television programmes made and broadcast or streamed from the UK. As a guide, such licences are usually subject to the following restrictions:
    • Usage in advertisements, signature tunes and station identity signals is excluded Re-mixing or editing of the sound and/or vision is excluded, other than for broadcasting less than the full length of the sound recording or music video Usage in circumstances where it may be reasonably considered detrimental to the performer or record company is excluded.
Developments in technology are facilitating the delivery of television programming from new platforms which can also be covered by licences from PPL and VPL. Separate licences are therefore available covering television channels delivered online and via mobile telephony.
