Tennessee Geography: Myths and Folklore
Learning about the geography of a state is more than just finding out what the land is like. It is learning about the people, their past, what they tell their children to keep them safe. For instance, the story of the Wampus Cat.
Forgive me, but I just have to try to tell the story myself:
The Legend of the Wampus Cat
Hiding during the day in the caves underneath the city of Knoxville and roaming at night in the mountain wilderness is the mythical creature known as the Wampus Cat. If for some reason, you are unlucky enough to come face to face with this terrifying creature then you may be able to understand the fright that came upon me when I saw a Wampus Cat.
It is believed that the Wampus is a Cherokee woman who either tried to listen to the tribal council stories (forbidden to women) or who followed her husband on a hunt. She wore a mask or a cat fur and when discovered she was forced to wear the fur coat forever and her spirit still wanders through the hills of Tennessee.

    Johnson County Tennessee Geography
Johnson County is the extreme eastern county of the State. It is bounded on the north by Virginia and on the east and southeast by North Carolina.
The area in acres is 249,600, or in square miles about 890. It is w ell watered by springs and streams. The Watauga River forms the dividing line between this county and Carter for a short distance, and receives the principal stream of the former, Roane Creek. The remaining streams of the county are Little Doe River, a tributary of Roane Creek, and Laurel Fork and Beaverdam Creek, which waters enter the Holston River. The surface of the county is usually broken. The Iron Mountain traverses it from northeast to southwest, and Stone Mountain marks the boundary of North Carolina. Doe Mountain lies wholly within the county, and extends a distance of about twelve miles.

Welcome to the Department of Geography
Welcome to the Department of Geography's web page. Our department offers B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in geography, and our faculty and students, including undergraduate students, conduct research in Tennessee and across the globe. What do we study? For starters: how spatially explicit data (such as from cell-phones) can be analyzed to provide new knowledge of the movement of people over time and space; how cities grow and develop; how and where climate has changed; how human activities and environmental changes have affected headwater streams, water resources, and the distribution of species; what factors affect the distribution of people and goods; and how culture contributes to the distinctiveness of different places (see Specialties for further information). We operate a Cartographic Services Laboratory (we make maps!) and host laboratories of Paleoenvironmental Research, Tree-Ring Science, Environmental Dynamics, and Cosmogenic Isotope Research, as well as the University of Tennessee's Initiative for Quaternary Paleoclimate Research and the Tennessee Geographic Alliance.
