  • Tennessee, a state in the southeastern United States. It stretches from the Appalachians to the Mississippi River, bordering eight states. Part of the story of Tennessee's varied geography and history is told by the many nicknames the state has acquired since its founding. Tennessee is best known as the “Volunteer State”; this nickname honors the thousands of Tennesseans who volunteered and distinguished themselves in the War of 1812. “Hog and Hominy State” is a nickname that stemmed from the predominance of pork and corn products in Tennessee's economy in the 1800's. Though the name is now obsolete, farming remains important, with soybeans, tobacco, corn, and cattle being the chief products. The Civil War—fought more in Tennessee than any other state except Virginia—scarred the land and produced the nickname “Butternuts” for Tennesseans. It was first applied to Tennessee soldiers because of their tan-colored uniforms.

Land
Tennessee is divided into six major physical regions: the Unaka Mountains, the Great Valley of East Tennessee, the Cumberland Plateau, the Highland Rim, the Central Basin, and the Gulf Coastal Plain. In addition, there are two minor physical regions: the Western Valley of the Tennessee River and the Mississippi Flood Plains.
The Unaka Mountains, part of the Appalachian chain includes several ranges of which the most notable is the Great Smoky Mountains. The region constitutes the highest and most rugged surface in the state and covers an area of about 2,600 sq mi (6,700 sq km). The tallest peak Clingmans Dome in the Great Smokies is at a height of 6,643 ft (2,026 m). It is also the highest point of the state.
The Great Valley of East Tennessee extends from southwestern Virginia into northern Georgia. The Great Valley is a segment of the Ridge and Valley province of the Appalachian Highlands, which reach from New York into Alabama. This region, consisting of long, narrow ridges with broad valleys between them, covers more than 9,000 sq mi (23,000 sq km) of Tennessee. The area is surrounded with artificial lakes and dams that supply electric power and aid in flood control.
The Cumberland Plateau, which extends in its entirety from southern Kentucky into central Alabama, has an area of about 5,400 sq mi (14,000 sq km) in Middle Tennessee. The plateau includes both the Cumberland Mountains, which rise to a height of 3,500 ft (1,100 m), and the Sequatchie Valley, which lies about 1,000 ft (300 m) below the surface of the adjoining plateau.

In the Elementary Geography section we learned how to make a map of Tennessee using "a funny box, four lines and four dots." (If you don't remember how to do this, click here .) Let's pick up where we left off.
First we are going to talk about Tennessee's SIX physical regions and THREE Grand Divisions. Take your time because this can get a bit confusing.
This map shows the six physical regions of Tennessee.
MAP: Sherrie Collie, Collinwood Middle School Physical Regions
Parts of Tennessee look and feel completely different than other parts. Tennessee is, in some areas, so mountainous that it's hard to get around, while in other places the state is as flat as can be. To describe the terrain, people often divide the state into six physical regions.
Moving from west to east:
Dyer County, part of the Gulf Coastal Plain * Gulf Coastal Plain. The entire western third of the state is considered Gulf Coastal Plain. This is where the elevation of the state is lowest and the land is flattest.
(NOTE: Many geologists say West Tennessee is made up of three regions: The Mississippi River Alluvial Plain, the Gulf Coastal Plain and the Western Valley of the Tennessee Valley. But for TCAP testing purposes, the Department of Education classifies all of West Tennessee as Gulf Coastal Plain.

Located in southeastern USA, Tennessee extends from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to flatlands along the Mississippi River in the west. The Tennessee River, trisecting the state, was dammed for hydroelectric power during the Great Depression; the state's agricultural economy was transformed as industries moved into the state to exploit low cost electricity from these dams. Once home to the Cherokee and Chickasaw Native Americans, Tennessee became the 16th state on June 1, 1796. Divided on the issue of slavery during the Civil War, Tennessee reluctantly joined the Confederacy in 1861. The battles of Shiloh and Franklin were fought on the state's soil, and after the war, the
