Tessellation A tiling of regular polygons (in two dimensions), polyhedra (three dimensions), or polytopes dimensions) is called a tessellation. Tessellations can be specified using a The breaking up of self- intersecting polygons into simple polygons is also called tessellation (Woo et al. 1999), or more properly, polygon tessellation There are exactly three regular tessellations composed of regular polygons symmetrically tiling the plane. Tessellations of the plane by two or more convex regular polygons such that the same polygons in the same order surround each polygon vertex are called semiregular tessellations , or sometimes Archimedean tessellations. In the plane, there are eight such tessellations, illustrated above (Ghyka 1977, pp. 76-78; Williams 1979, pp. 37-41; Steinhaus 1999, pp. 78-82; Wells 1991, pp. 226-227). There are 14 demiregular (or polymorph) tessellations which are orderly compositions of the three regular and eight semiregular tessellations (Critchlow 1970, pp. 62-67; Ghyka 1977, pp. 78-80; Williams 1979, p. 43; Steinhaus 1999, pp. 79 and 81-82). TESSELLATIONS
Geometry Julie Boatright
The ability to recognize patterns in the world around us leads to a better understanding of mathematics. Patterns can be found in nature, in art, in architure, in numbers and many other places. Tessellations are patterns! The following websites are about tessellations (also referred to as tilings) - what they are, how they are formed, where they orginated, how they are used in art and how to create them. Browse through these websites and answer the questions below.
What is a tessellation?
This site at Math Forum defines tessellations and describes how different types are formed. What is a tile? This is another page from Math Forum that defines tiles and their relationship to tessellations. Rep-Tiles The tiles known as rep-tiles are decsribed and grouped according to composition. Hop's Escher Tiles On this page Hop displays a collection of his tiles made in the style of M. C. Escher. Several of the tiles are animated. M. C. Escher The well-know artist Escher is the subject of this entire web site. A biography, discussion of his work, and pictures of his lithographs and wood carvings are just part of the information to be found here. Tessellate!

Jill Britton's HOME
Teacher, consultant, author, conference speaker, Jill Britton is deeply interested in the teaching of mathematics. Jill's experiences include teaching Middle School students in summer camps, conducting workshops for elementary students and/or teachers nationwide, and instructing college level students full-time. She is currently a mathematics instructor at Camosun College in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Jill's Camosun Website Jill regards mathematics
as the study of patterns and uses symmetry and tessellations, the art of M. C. Escher, polyhedra (unit origami and tetrahedral kites), curves (line designs, conics, cycloids/spirograph, curves of constant width, and fractals), and recreational topology to promote an interest in mathematics. Jill's strong background in teaching forms the basis for the books she has authored. These books are intended to be resource material to supplement the curriculum with recreationally-focused topics. In 2009, Jill was the recipient of the ACCC national award for teaching excellence.
