Texas is known as the Lone Star State; friendship is the state motto. Texas comes from the word teysha meaning hello friend in the language of the Caddo Indian tribes. Spanish explorers and settlers used this word to refer to the friendly tribes throughout Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
It leads the nation in total productivity. It is the leading oil producer in the nation. More beef is produced in Texas than in any other state. It is still the nation's largest cotton producer. Texas is a giant in the space industry, and is a major player in high technology. Fittingly, Texas also boasts the largest of all the state capitol buildings, constructed of 15,000 carloads of pink granite.
No state has a greater variety of reptiles, or a more diverse selection of flowers, than the great state of Texas. Among them the Horned Lizard (toad), the official state reptile and Bluebonnets, the official state flower.
Texas joined the Union for the first time in 1845, December 29th. Then, the Civil War occurred. Texas seceded from the Union over the course of the first part of 1861 and joined the Confederacy. Readmission seems to have been a gradual process.**
"When the war ended in April 1865, Texas was still considered to be in revolt (the last battle of the Civil War was fought on Texas soil after the surrender at Appomattox). Although a state of peace was declared as existing between the United States and the other Southern States on April 2, 1866, President Andrew Johnson did not issue a similar proclamation of peace between the U.S. and Texas until August 20, 1866, even though the Constitutional Convention of 1866 had approved on March 15, 1866 an ordinance to nullify the actions of the Secession Convention.**

Paris is the county seat and is the second largest Paris in the world. Although George W. Wright is often considered the first permanent settler in the area, his family settled downriver at Pecan Point in 1816 and did not actually move to the future Lamar County until 1839. The area of present Lamar County was within the boundaries of Red River County at the time of the Republic of Texas. By 1840 population growth necessitated a new county, and legislation was introduced by representatives from Red River County. Wright, who had served in the Third Congress as a representative from Red River County, was a major promoter of the founding of Lamar County, which was established by act of the Fifth Congress of the republic on December 17, 1840, and organized by election on February 1, 1841. At the time, the county included much of what is now Delta County.

Welcome to Brazos County, Texas!
Located between the Navasota and Brazos rivers in southeast central Texas, and bounded on the northwest by Robertson County, on the east by Madison and Grimes counties, on the south by Washington County, and on the southwest by Burleson County. The county was named for the nearby Brazos River. Bryan is the county seat, and College Station is the other major community in the county. It comprises 588 square miles of rolling prairie and woodland.
Brazos County has been the site of human habitation for more than 12,000 years. Evidence of Paleo-Indian inhabitants in the area has turned up in the form of spearpoints, and the remains of a butchered mammoth have been found at the Duewall-Newberry Site on the Brazos River. Within the historic period, Spanish explorers reported Bidai and Tonkawa Indians in the area, and there is evidence that groups related to the Apaches and Comanches occasionally hunted buffalo as far east as Brazos County. Spanish travelers on the Old San Antonio Road passed along the northwest boundary of the future county, but there was no Spanish settlement in the area.
In 1860 growth in the county was speeded by the arrival of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, with Millican as its terminus. On the eve of the Civil War, Brazos County had a mixed economy of small farms and a few larger plantations, with a population of 1,713 whites and 1,063 slaves. Of the 118 slaveholders in the county, seventy-seven owned fewer than five slaves, and only four owned more than fifty. The county voted 215 to 44 for secession in 1861 and mobilized its inhabitants for the war. The railhead at Millican became an important transportation center for the Confederate war effort, and a training camp was established nearby in 1861.

Welcome everyone, from hot south Texas. My name is Robert Black and my wife is Nora. We have two beautiful daughters named Lindsey and Kasey and now two beautiful granddaughters. We live in a very small south Texas town called Mirando City . It is located 32 miles east of Laredo, Texas.
GENEALOGY is our hobby. This page is dedicated to the search for our ancestors and as the title of this page suggests, also assisting anyone interested in genealogy in south Texas. When we say south Texas, we are concentrating our search for people that lived in Texas basically south of San Antonio, but we don't want to place any limitations on our page. We will accept surnames or queries from anyone, but the majority of our ancestors lived in south Texas. This area is rich in history and ought to make for a interesting search for ancestors. To assist others in their search for ancestors from south Texas, we have started our South Texas Surname Page and a South Texas History and Genealogy Links page. On the surname page you can enter the surnames of your family that lived in south Texas and include your e-mail address so that others researching the same surnames can get in touch with you. The Links page will be dedicated to internet sources of history and genealogy for the south Texas area. Any suggestions for links would be greatly appreciated. Check out our other home pages.
