Occupying about 7% of the total water and land area of the U.S., it is the second largest state after Alaska , and is the southernmost part of the Great Plains , which end in the south against the folded Sierra Madre Oriental of Mexico Texas is in the south-central part of the United States of America, and is considered to form part of the U.S. South and also part of the U.S. Southwest By residents, the state is generally divided into North Texas East Texas , Central Texas, South Texas West Texas (and sometimes the Panhandle ), but according to the Texas Almanac , Texas has four major physical regions: Gulf Coastal Plains, Interior Lowlands, Great Plains, and Basin and Range Province. This has been cited as the difference between human geography and physical geography , although the fact that Texas was granted (and retains to this day) the prerogative to divide into as many as five U.S. states may be a historical motive for Texans defining their state as containing exactly five regions. Some regions in Texas are more associated with the South than the Southwest (primarily East Texas , Central Texas, and North Texas ), while other regions share more similarities with the Southwest (primarily far

The major physiographic regions of Texas include the Gulf Coastal Plain in the east and southeast; the North Central Plains, covering most of central Texas; the Great Plains, extending from west-central Texas up into the panhandle; and the mountainous trans-Pecos area in the extreme west.
Within the Gulf Coastal Plain are the Piney Woods, and the Post Oak Belt, a flat region of mixed soil that gives way to the rolling prairie of the Blackland Belt which is the state's most densely populated region. The Balcones Escarpment (so-called by the Spanish because its sharp profile suggests a balcony), a geological fault line running from the Rio Grande near Del Rio across central Texas, separates the Gulf Coastal Plain and Rio Grande Plain from the North Central Plains and south-central Hill Country. It also divides East Texas from West Texas.
The highest point of the state, Guadalupe Peak with an altitude of 8,749 ft (2,668 m) lies between the Pecos River and the Rio Grande.
One reason Texas has so many reservoirs is that it is blessed with a number of major river systems, although none is navigable for more than 50 mi (80 km) inland. Rio Grande is the nation's 2nd-longest river, exceeded only by the Missouri-Mississippi river system. The Colorado River is the longest river wholly within the state, extending about 600 mi (970 km) on its journey across central and southeastern Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. Other important rivers include the Nueces, San Antonio, the Brazos, the Trinity, the San Jacinto, the Neches, the Sabine, the Red, and the Canadian, which crosses the Texas panhandle from New Mexico to Oklahoma, bringing moisture to the cattle raisers and wheat growers of that region. In all, Texas has about 3,700 identifiable streams, many of which dry up in the summer and flood during periods of rainfall.

Previous Texas is the second largest state in the United States behind Alaska. It has 268, 820 square miles. If Texas was a country, it would be the fortieth largest country in the world.
Texas is in the south central portion of the United States. Much of its borders are rivers. The Rio Grande River provides a border with the Mexican states of Coahuila, Chihuahua, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas to the southern portion. The Red River provides a border with Oklahoma as well as Arkansas. The Sabine River provides a border with the state of Louisiana to the east. The Texas Panhandle has a border with Oklahoma and Mexico. There is a wide range of soil, topography, rainfall, geology, and plant and animal communities in Texas. Texas even has 10 climatic regions. Texas also has 3,700 streams and 15 major rivers. The largest river of these fifteen is the Rio Grande River. Texas has many artificial lakes. In fact, Texans have built over 100 artificial ones, but they also have one natural lake, Caddo Lake. In order to best understand the geography of Texas, we will split it up into regions.

In the middle of the twentieth century the boundaries of Texas were 2,845.3 miles long, counting the great arc of the Gulf Coast line and only the larger river bends. If the smaller meanderings of the rivers and the tidewater coast line were followed, the boundary was 4,137 miles long and enclosed 263,644 square miles of land and 3,695 square miles of water surface. The location of Texas boundaries has been the subject of international and interstate conflict resulting in treaties, litigation, and commissions from 1736 to the present. Controversy over details continues, as the tidelands controversy and the Chamizal disputeq illustrate. In 1995 the state legislature authorized a Red River Boundary Commission to fix the boundary between Oklahoma and Texas, where the still-shifting Red River has frequently changed course and muddied the issue for two centuries.
As defined in the Adams-Ons Treaty of 1819, the northern and northwestern boundary of Texas followed the course of the Red River westward to the 100th meridian and north along that meridian to the Arkansas River, the whole line as depicted in the Melish map of 1818. Then the Compromise of 1850 placed the north line of the Panhandle at 3630". No problem arose over this boundary until 1858, when A. H. Jones and H. M. Brown, who had been employed to locate the 100th meridian in making surveys of grants to various Indian tribes, discovered that the Melish map had erroneously located that meridian 100 miles too far east.
