Animism in Thailand Culture
In modern Thailand culture, both in the cities and in rural areas, most homes will usually have erected in the corner of the garden, a "Spirit House" which is called "Baan Phra Pume" in Thai. The origins of Animism "Spirit Worship" originated both in the island world of Indonesia and on the Indo-China mainland. The people who inhabited these lands in the pre-Christian era were largely animists. They believed that inanimate objects such as trees, rocks, mountains as well as people, had spirits which could affect the well-being of those around them which then manifest itself through the worship of ancestors and spirit worship. Burial mounds usually included special items to honour the dead or assist them in their next life, such as the bracelets and utensils found in the prehistoric site of Ban Chiang in North East Thailand,a site which goes back, it is thought to around 3,000 BC. Spirit worship is often accompanied by ritual chants and dances, special folk drama or masques such as the "shadow play".

And The Thai Etiquette And Customs
Thailand Culture - Etiquette - Customs Thais greet, wish farewell and acknowledge each other with a gesture called Wai. The hands being held in a prayer like manner, palms pressed together and a slight bow of the head. The Wai is also used to show respect. The closer the hands are held to the forehead and the lower the bow the more respect is being shown. The Wai is also a way of saying Thank you, or to apologize. The Wai is initiated by the lower in age or status and responded to by the higher. If there is a large social difference between statuses, the Wai may not be returned.
A Few Reasons Why Thais Smile
  • amusement embarrassment a way of saying thank you to make friends
Smiling is part of the Thailand Culture and the generous use of wearing a smile will make friends and open doors. It confuses Thai people to see Westerners who are serious looking or even worse, angry. Thais love to smile and good humor and a smile from a foreigner is a nice treat. Expression of anger, or showing that you are not in control of your emotion, is "losing your face".

    Wai
Thais usually don't shake hands but rather "Wai" which is to raise both hands gracefully and unhurriedly, palm to palm, fingers together, and close to the body bringing them in a prayer like gesture to the head while bowing slightly. Your fingers tips should be between your chin and the top of your nose. The higher the hands are raised to the persons head indicates the level of respect the person is paying. In Thailand, to "Wai" means not only to greet and say farewell, more importantly, it means to pay your respects. Therefore you will see Thais giving a "Wai" when they pass shrines or the statue of a respected king. Thais are very honoured when Westerners return the polite gesture; a women must not offer to shake hands. Don't be surprised if you are always addressed by your first name, as this is the manner in which Thais refer to one another, although in formal situations it's appropriate to use "Mr.," "Mrs.," or "Miss" with personal or family names. It is considered rude to pat or touch someone on the head. Do not point your foot at another person (or definitely not at a Buddha image in the temple) this is considered highly impolite, as is striding over a person who may be sitting on the floor. The head is the most sacred part of the human body while the foot is the lowest (and hence the least important). Objects are passed and received with the right hand only. Public displays of affection are frowned upon, and it is rare to see people even holding hands.

It is known as a country of grace and pride. Thailand's leaders have worked to make sure that the unique Thai music, dance, theater, art, and traditions will continue to be enjoyed by all its citizens. In rural Thai villages, culture and traditions are passed on by extended families. These families are made up of several generations living in one house or in a group of houses called a compound. Children learn from their elders the codes of behavior that will guide them all their lives. In the villages, homes are usually simple structures raised above the ground on posts. The family lives in the one-room house and animals like chickens and buffalo are kept in the space below the house. There is not much privacy, but privacy is not valued as much as social harmony, tact, and tolerance.

CULTURE Cultural Guidelines Do
Smile. Greet people. It is almost impossible to be overly friendly. You will be amazed at how many will remember your name if you give it. Don't
Don't take offence at questions like "Are you married?" "How much money do you earn?" No harm is meant by these queries. Do
Try to eat Thai food. It's not all spicy. Order a few dishes with some steamed rice and share them. That's the way Thais eat. Don't
Get annoyed if all the dishes you order don't come at the same time. Since Thais usually share everything they order, it doesn't matter to them which item comes out first. Do
Fuss over little children and let other people fuss over yours. Don't
Be surprised if a group of strangers pick up and cuddle your baby, passing him around with "oohs" "aahs" and kisses. Do
Be patient and stay calm in trying situations. If you lose your cool, you lose people's respect.
