Cooking With Your Kids This Thanksgiving
If you're reading this, you've probably got one or two or more children running around that house don't you? Put them to work and give them all jobs. Just don't mention the words "work" or "job". Kids like to be helpful, especially when they see how much you appreciate it. Let them help! If the child is too young to do a whole recipe, just give them certain tasks in a recipe and have them help you. Little ones can melt butter in the microwave, mash the potatoes, wash the vegetables, toss the salad, and put the marshmallows on the sweet potato casserole. Keep one step ahead of total chaos by having someone wash the dirty dishes that are accumulating. Perhaps those who are watching football on TV could lend a hand! Not only will there be fewer dishes to do at the end, but it leaves lots more room for the cooks to prepare the grand feast.

    The Plan
Everything starts with a plan. The more you can spread these chores out over the days and weeks ahead of Thanksgiving, the more relaxed you will be. Gather your cookbooks, traditional recipes, guest list, and pencil and paper. Sit down in a quiet spot and:
    • Plan and write down the menu. Think about including some crockpot or pressure cooker recipes, some cooked on the stovetop, and some oven recipes too, so activity isn't concentrated around just one appliance.
    • Plan a theme for your Thanksgiving dinner table so you can start thinking about the plates, decorations, and serving pieces you want to use. This can be as simple as a cheery primary colored table, or more elaborate, using heriloom china and crystal, flowers, vegetables, and decorations from your yard and garden. I like to use my deep gold tablecloth along with my grandmother's amber Depression glass and gold-tinted goblets so the dining room glows. I also like my mother-in-law's silver luster china with a silver tablecloth and mercury glass candlesticks.
    • Read over each recipe to make sure it's complete, with good instructions, and make your grocery list from the recipe card. You may need to order some items ahead.

    Thanksgiving Cooking
(draft copy thanksgiving 2000) As a rule the standard Thanksgiving Dinner will consist of something like: a roasted turkey, candied yams, a couple of veggies, a salad, and of course pumpkin pie. While there is many variations to this menu, there are a few things they all have in common. There will most likely be a bird of some type and someone will be working hard to pull off this wonderful feast. Now while we all dream of the perfect dinner, more times than we care to admit things just don't go as planned. Some of the more memorable potatioal disasters I remember are:
    • More guests than I planned for show. It's only hours before serving time and the @#$% bird is still frozen like a rock. The oven dies, Wednesday night. You don't find out that you are cooking the meal until Wednesday night. Cooking for 50 people in a VERY SMALL apartment kitchen.
Then there are the horror stories from friends and family:
    • The daughter who wasn't experienced, cooking her first holiday meal for her new hubby and friends. Nice looking turkey, but noticeabley undercooked. The friend who's dog ran off with the bird.

Filed under thanksgiving recipes Thanksgiving cooking may be a little stressful when some people will be coming over your house and you need to cook the entire meal. Yes, your friends are bringing something to eat and will help you clean up and with the dishes, however, you still have loads of work to do upon waking up that morning. Well, don’t worry. You probably got a kid or two running around the house. Involve them in the preparation and put them to work. Just do not mention the word “work”. Kids will surely want to be of help especially when they know that you appreciate it. With all the preparation and plans, you definitely want to achieve a successful Thanksgiving cooking, so you have to plan it all. Take some time before the day of the celebration to plot everything. Surely, you know what you want to cook and serve your guests as you do the same thing each year. Look at each of the recipe and determine what is involved. You may be used to doing it but the kids do not. Thus, assign a recipe to every kid, depending on their proficiency level. You can also find easier versions of the recipe you want to prepare. Go into the steps with the kids and explain how it will work. When your kids are too young to make the recipe, provide them with simpler tasks and make them still involve in the preparation. These little ones can already mash the potatoes, melt butter, wash the veggies, toss the salad and sprinkle marshmallows over the casserole recipe. Your salad can absolutely be made earlier a day or a night before. In this way, your Thanksgiving cooking will not consume much of your time.
