    Simple Thanksgiving Cooking With Children
By Donna Thacker eHow Contributor updated: August 10, 2009 I want to do this! What's This? Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday to spend in the kitchen cooking with your children. Even toddlers can get involved and feel that they are contributing to the meal. Create a menu that is simple enough for everyone to help in some way. Count on extra preparation time and assign clean-as-you-go tasks in advance so that family cooking will produce less stress and more good family memories.

  • Assign tasks to your children according to their ages. A small child can use a scrub brush to wash vegetables, an important part of meal preparation. Teach safe food-handling techniques by having a little one carefully wash his hands before breaking up slices of bread to go into the dressing. Young children can stir as you add ingredients to the dressing mix.
Older children can peel and dice potatoes and other vegetables. This will teach them to work together. Allow them to do as much as they can, with your assistance and supervision, especially with the use of knives.

    Thanksgiving Cooking with Kids
Kids love to help in the kitchen! And Thanksgiving is no exception little ones are automatically drawn to the hustle and bustle going on during this holiday. How to keep them happy and occupied? Let them help! There are many ways you can involve your kids in the creation of a Thanksgiving feast.
One easy thing that kids can do involves deviled eggs. Put your deviled egg filling into a pastry bag, or make your own using a Ziploc bag with a small cut in one corner. Let your little ones squeeze the filling into each empty egg half, then have them garnish the eggs with a light sprinkle of paprika.
Another easy thing that your kids can do is help with the mixing of various dishes. Let them mash the potatoes with an old-fashioned potato masher, and supervise while they gently stir in butter, salt and pepper. Allow them to add the broth, eggs and seasonings to your stuffing and blend together.

The Thanksgiving meal isn't very different from Christmas really. Turkey is the required main dish and you have to serve dressing, mashed potoatoes, sweet potatoes, cornbread or yeast rolls, and pumpkin pie with it. We usually had our big meal in the early afternoon, around 1pm or 2pm, as soon as the turkey finished roasting and before the football got in full swing. Don't forget to make plenty of ice tea! Usually we roasted the turkey in a Nesco or similar type roaster, although you can use the oven if you don't have a roaster. We prefer the roaster because it leaves the oven free for other dishes and doesn't heat up the kitchen nearly as much. Up here in Canada, they have Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October instead of the fourth Thursday in November. Usually we celebrate in October with my husband's family and then again in November with just the two of us. In 2006, Thanksgiving will be on October 9 in Canada and November 23 in the United States. Remember, it is important that the whole family sit down to eat together. This is a family holiday not a cafeteria holiday!
