A recent conversation involving American Indian leadership resulted in a
valuable idea: let's make this year's Thanksgiving season the most
comprehensive outreach on Indian peoples and issues ever.
Anyone who ever ran an Indian program knows that the season of educational
focus for Indians begins on Columbus Day and ends at Thanksgiving.
Columbus Day, since 1992, has become this hemisphere's day of mourning and
protest. The idea of celebrating Columbus and his enterprise becomes
increasingly dubious, given the horrendous misery his so-called "discovery"

Oct 28, 2010 "Contribute content like this. Start Here Making the school or parent-led visit to a pumpkin patch at the ripening time of the year can be a great experience for the kids. Beyond carving the orange gourds for Halloween decor, the kids can learn many other interesting facts about the pumpkin.
1. History of the pumpkin: The name comes from the Greek pepon, meaning large melon. It was cultivated in Ancient Egypt and Mexico in the New World for at least the past 4,000 years. Archeological digs still find ancient pottery containing pumpkin seeds.
If pumpkins are expected to be ripe for Halloween, the seeds should be planted no earlier than late May in the north to early July in the south. The planting must be at the right time, with weather and luck affecting whether the pumpkins will be big and solid or puny and soft.
3. Importance of agriculture: Throughout the world, agriculture is the most vital industry that sustains mankind. In America, until the late 19th Century, agriculture jobs were 80 percent of the workforce. Today, because of mechanization and big corporate farms, only 20 percent are involved in agriculture.

Be Thankful for Mom by Brian Haynes
The following is a post from Brian Haynes, author of Shift. His blog ( legacyblog.org ) has great ideas for family devotions. I thought his post today was really good and so I wanted to share it with you.
Teach Your Kids to be Thankful for Mom

The days before the Thanksgiving holiday always cause introspection on my part. About this time every year I find myself pondering the things I am most thankful for in life. I ask the Lord to bring to mind the greatest blessings of my life and then I pray, thanking Him for the amazing love He has lavished on me. I have noticed, the older and hopefully wiser I am becoming, the blessings have nothing to do with material possession. As I think about my blessings this year I realize every blessing comes in the form of a relationship. The things I am thankful for are not things at all but instead, people.
Particularly I am thankful for my mother and my wife. They are 2 of the greatest blessings of my life.
  • Demonstrate your thankfulness for their mother. Make a public speech. Around the table on thanksgiving day I will make a speech. It will include a deep sense of gratitude for King Jesus and then a deep appreciation and thankfulness for my wife and their mother. I will list many of the ways she loves us and tell her thank you in front of everyone. This is one way we can teach our children to be open and express gratitude to Mom. If you need content, check out Proverbs 31.

After Thanksgiving What Do You Do With The Leftovers?
Thanksgivinga time of thanks giving and truth telling.
The truth about our nationit is a country rooted in every other country in the world. And the reason we have Thanksgiving is to be thankful that human beings, under challenging circumstances, in little wooden boats with sails and little ability to keep food edible over long ocean journeys, could move themselves across great ocean distances, encounter the hardships of strange lands, strange weather, different flora and fauna, could survive, and eventually thrive. It is a time to be thankful for the survival of all who came to this land and made it what it is for us the positive and the negative. We all know the story and we are not going to emphasis the horrid treatment of our indigenous peoples; but we cannot have Thanksgiving without lifting up their lives and the lessons they tried to teach us.
