I. Origins of Theatre
Little information about the origin of theatre has survived. The information we do have comes from wall paintings, decorations, artifacts, and hieroglyphics that show the importance of successful hunts, seasonal changes, life cycles, and stories of the gods. From these we see the necessity of passing along the experiences of the old to the young through art, storytelling, and dramatizing events. This practice gave the youth of a culture a guide and a plan for their own lives. Theatre emerged from myth , ritual, and ceremony. Early societies perceived connections between certain actions performed by the group or leaders in the group and the desired results of the whole society. These actions moved from habit, to tradition, and then on to ceremony and ritual. The formulation of these actions, and the consequent repetition and rehearsal, broke the ground for theatre. According to the mythologist Joseph Campbell , rituals are related to three basic concerns: pleasure, power, and duty. Power- influencing and controlling events- was often the intention of rituals such as ceremonies to guarantee a successful crop or to please the gods. Usually societies had rituals that glorified supernatural powers, victories, and heroes. Often supernatural forms would be represented using costumes and masks. Rituals that were practiced as duty to the gods, also brought entertainment and pleasure.

Designed originally by distinguished theatre historians Michael Booth and Alan Hughes, our history program provides students with a rare opportunity to study the theatrical past within a practically-oriented, fully functioning contemporary theatre complex. Students create their programs in close consultation with faculty, choosing from among a wide range of areas of study. Current faculty specialties include: finance and economics; acting; ancient Greek theatre; 19th- and 20th-century commercial theatre; opera history; theatre criticism; dance history and theory; and Modernism. Students may also study the history of design, directing, dramatic literature and production. Our affiliation with the Faculty of Fine Arts offers students exciting opportunities for pursuing interdisciplinary studies in Music and Opera, Writing, Visual Arts and Art History. In addition, UVic's outstanding departments of History, Law, English, Greek and Roman Studies, Pacific and Asian Studies, and Germanic Languages and Literatures provide theatre history students with many courses and resources directly relevant to their studies.

Theatre History The Theatre closed in 1993 when it was sold to The Finders, a group led by Culpeper native Marion Pettie. Under ownership of The Finders, the theatre was not open to the public. During those years no significant repairs or improvements were made to the building. After the death of Mr. Pettie, the theatre was sold to and is presently owned by local businessman and philanthropist Greg Yates. Mr. Yates purchased the 11,000 square foot building in 2004 in an effort to save the State Theatre from demolition or renovation into office/retail space. In February of 2006, Mr. and Mrs. Yates donated to property to the State Theatre Foundation, Inc. In May of 2008, the State Theatre was placed on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Below are historic photographs of the Culpeper State Theatre. Theatre History The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati's rich history began over 80 years ago. In 1924, The Junior League of Cincinnati developed a plan to introduce tri-state area children to the magic of theatre. Their plan evolved into The Children's Theatre, which incorporated in 1947. In 1993, the Board of Trustees made a decision to revitalize and upgrade the organization, and they hired well-known imaginative talent Jack Louiso as Artistic Director. Under his leadership, the organization has risen to a new level of professionalism. Today, The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati continues its unique tradition. We introduce young audiences in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to the performing arts through professional, fully-staged productions that appeal to parents and educators while teaching morals and values. Each season, we present three one-hour children's productions aimed at children ages 4 and up. Weekday matinees are held for local school students, while weekend performances are for the public. The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati is committed to providing more than just theatre to our patrons. We strive to include dance, visual art, opera, and a variety of musical styles into our repertoire, helping children to understand all aspects of theatre - and expanding their awareness of all of the arts in the community, leading to more opportunities for self-expression and creativity. Our goal is to entertain and delight local audiences through quality, family-friendly arts entertainment at an affordable price, while helping our patrons grow through exposure to theatre and the arts. It is our hope that all children in the tri-state area - many of whom have never experienced live theatre - will have the opportunity to attend productions and incorporate the lessons they learn into their everyday lives. Whether it's through the values in

he study of the history of "theatre" begins with a definition of the term itself. Even if we uploaded an entire book on the history of theatre, we would first have to determine what to include and what was not relevant to our primary interest and inquiry. Here, we deal with the development of theatre as an art form consisting of works written for the stage and intended to be performed by actors on a stage.
We do not include in our brief sketches the history of dance, or primitive drama, of rhetoric and dialogue as such, or of related areas such as pantomime, opera or ballet. Because the works we perform have been influenced more by the development of theatre in the West, we don't include information on the theatre as it developed in India, China and Japan.
We've divided this topic into three main sections. The first section deals with "ancient theatre", which includes the development of drama in Greece and Rome, but which also carries the subject from the fall of the Roman Empire through the middle ages. The second section deals with the rebirth of theatre brought on by the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation, the impact of Shakespeare on the art, and the subsequent development of theatre through the Restoration of the English Crown following the Republic under Oliver Cromwell. The

Opened on October 6, 1921 with four acts of vaudeville and a silent movie, “The Old Nest”, the Lincoln Theatre soon became the premier theatre in all of southern Illinois. The original admission for adults was 27˘ for the balcony and 36˘ for the main floor. On January 10, 1922, the St. Clair County Historical Society presented a bronze plaque to be placed on the theatre building commemorating Charles Dickens’ stay at the Mansion House Hotel. The Mansion House Hotel stood on the same site as the Lincoln Theatre. The Picture to the right is of the Lincoln from the late 1920's.
Photo from the late 1920's
Many great stars have appeared at the Lincoln including a young Ginger Rogers in November of 1926. About the same time, a fresh, new comedy act called the Three Nightingales, who later changed their name to the Marx Brothers, appeared in this theatre. On Thursday nights, amateurs from the audience could perform on stage. In 1927, a Wurlitzer organ was purchased for $30,000 and installed to replace the orchestra. This instrument was called a Unit Orchestra since it allowed full accompaniment to silent films while only having to pay one musician. Vin James, who was once the orchestra conductor, was hired as the regular organist. “Four Sons”, the last silent film at the Lincoln, played on March 13, 1929 and the organ was soon to be silenced on August 2, 1929, due to the popularity of the new talkie movies. It was then completely removed at a later date. In the 1950’s Cinemascope arrived at the Lincoln and the lower part of the chandelier had to be removed because it caused a shadow on the new movie screen. The first Cinemascope picture to play the Lincoln was “The Robe”.
