    Palace Theatre History
Home Away from Home Since shows were usually in town for multiple days and sometimes weeks, the backstage area was designed with the actors’ traveling needs in mind. The dressing room tower was organized like a small hotel complete with a "front desk," where performers picked up their room keys and mail. There were also kitchen facilities and a designated children's playroom for touring performers. The dressing rooms are all named after cities on the vaudeville touring routes, and still bear those names today. The animals also were taken into consideration. A porcelain animal bath was installed below the stage. There is also a ramp leading to the stage, as many animals will go up stairs, but not down.
    Star Power
During the '30s, '40s, and '50s, the Palace Theatre was the most active live show theatre in Columbus. Over the years, most of the top names in the entertainment business have appeared at the Palace Theatre, including Bing Crosby, Nat "King" Cole, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Jackie Gleason, Jack Benny, Mae West, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Burns and Allen, Eddie Cantor, Bill Robinson, Glenn Miller, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Harpo and Chico Marx.

Originally Known as "The New Palace"
The Palace Theatre opened at the comer of Randolph and LaSalle Streets in Chicago on October 4, 1926. Designed by legendary theatre architects George and Cornelius W. Rapp, the brothers also responsible for the design of the Chicago and Oriental Theatres, the building was commissioned by Emil and Karl Eitel. The Palace served as the central unit of their $12 million "Eitel Block Project," which also included the 22-story Metropolitan office building and The New Bismarck Hotel.
Originally the theatre was named "The New Palace," so as to avoid confusion with approximately ten other Chicago theatres which bore the Palace name. The theatre's interior featured a splendor previously unseen in Chicago - a breathtaking vision inspired by the palaces of Fontainebleau and Versailles. The theatre's distinctive characteristics included a lobby richly appointed in huge, decorative mirrors and breche violet and white marble, which swept majestically through a succession of lobbies and foyers; great wall surfaces enhanced with gold leaf and wood decorations; 2,500 plush, roomy seats; spectacular crystal chandeliers; a "cosmetique salon" where women received free beauty parlor service and scented cigarettes; and a stage sufficiently large enough to house the greatest productions of the day. 78. The Old English Pantomime
Article on the history of the development of pantomime in eighteenth century England.

THE OLD ENGLISH PANTOMIME
This document was originally published in The Drama: Its History, Literature and Influence on Civilization, vol. 15 . ed. Alfred Bates. London: Historical Publishing Company, 1906. pp. 78-81.
The Necromancer pantomimes continued to be the best trump card a manager could play at either of the patent houses. John Rich succeeded his father as owner of the old theatre in Lincoln's Inn in 1714. He had a taste for acting, and at first essayed tragedy; but, being a man entirely devoid of education, he made a dismal failure. Yet there was a strong dramatic genius in this coarse, illiterate man, though he was not under the inspiration of the tragic muse, and it burst forth when, in 1717, he appeared as Harlequin in a pantomime called Harlequin Executed . Borrowed from the Italian Arlecchino, harlequin had hitherto been a speaking part; it was Rich, or Lun as he chose to call himself in the bills, who, simply from his inability to speak upon the stage, originated the silent harlequin, and by mere dumb action could rival the power and pathos of the most accomplished tragedian. Early in 1723 the managers of Drury Lane, in rivalry with Rich, produced a pantomime by one Thurmond, a dancing-master, entitled

Theatre History The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati's rich history began over 80 years ago. In 1924, The Junior League of Cincinnati developed a plan to introduce tri-state area children to the magic of theatre. Their plan evolved into The Children's Theatre, which incorporated in 1947. In 1993, the Board of Trustees made a decision to revitalize and upgrade the organization, and they hired well-known imaginative talent Jack Louiso as Artistic Director. Under his leadership, the organization has risen to a new level of professionalism. Today, The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati continues its unique tradition. We introduce young audiences in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana to the performing arts through professional, fully-staged productions that appeal to parents and educators while teaching morals and values. Each season, we present three one-hour children's productions aimed at children ages 4 and up. Weekday matinees are held for local school students, while weekend performances are for the public. The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati is committed to providing more than just theatre to our patrons. We strive to include dance, visual art, opera, and a variety of musical styles into our repertoire, helping children to understand all aspects of theatre - and expanding their awareness of all of the arts in the community, leading to more opportunities for self-expression and creativity. Our goal is to entertain and delight local audiences through quality, family-friendly arts entertainment at an affordable price, while helping our patrons grow through exposure to theatre and the arts. It is our hope that all children in the tri-state area - many of whom have never experienced live theatre - will have the opportunity to attend productions and incorporate the lessons they learn into their everyday lives. Whether it's through the values in
