Read This First To the teacher, Greetings! What follows is a collection of directions that I give all of my students whenever we do a full-length play. Each student is assigned a "tech job." This may include make up, music director, etc. Each student is graded on both their dramatic role and their tech job.
I do not claim that my material is all original. I got it from many sources and organized and added to it to fit my program. The last play we did was Alice in Wonderland. It had about 200 people associated with it in some way. Without a clear delineation of the student's tech jobs, the production would have been much more difficult. I require that all students present a report of their progress to the Assistant Director (another tech job) at two dates during the rehearsal process. Feel free to use this material for all non-commercial use. If you do use it, please email me and let me know how everything went with your production.

Overview

Musical theater book writers, lyricists, and composers have long looked to literature for their inspiration and subject material. In this lesson, students will compare and contrast literary works and the musicals they inspired. Utilizing video clips and Web sites, students will compare specific passages from original texts to moments in Broadway musicals on which they were based, and analyze similarities and differences between the two. As a culminating activity, students will try their hand at adapting and performing a nondramatic narrative, either as a straight play or as a musical number.
This lesson can be used as a pre- or postviewing activity for the PBS series BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL, or as an independent lesson for the language arts or theater classroom. A basic knowledge of musical theater (or movie musicals) and its conventions is required, and a basic familiarity with Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is helpful.
Time Allotment : Three to four 45-minute class periods (the Culminating Activity will involve additional class and/or homework time).

    Grade Level:
    Overview
Students will interpret and perform a scene from William Shakespeare's HAMLET. Objectives This engaging lesson provides students with a fun and simple introduction to exploring Shakespeare through the use of text from HAMLET. It allows students to play with Shakespeare in a direct and enjoyable way. At the end of this lesson, students will have a greater ease and understanding of performing and studying Shakespeare. Students will also gain an appreciation for the role of the actor in interpreting a text by making choices. Estimated Time 40 minutes Necessary Materials
    • Pen/Pencil
    • One Sheet Print out of the first 11 lines of HAMLET by William Shakespeare (Text Provided Below)
    • Index Cards (to create the "Secret Style Cards")
Teaching Procedure Step 1: Give students a copy of the first 11 lines of HAMLET and have them get out pencils and pens. You may not even want to tell them that it is Shakespeare right away. Either way, it is best to have the text on an individual sheet so students can write on the paper.
