Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (January 2008) Theoretical physics is a branch of physics which employs mathematical models and abstractions of physics in an attempt to explain natural phenomena. Its central core is mathematical physics note 1 though other conceptual techniques are also used. The goal is to rationalize, explain and predict physical phenomena The advancement of science depends in general on the interplay between experimental studies and theory . In some cases, theoretical physics adheres to standards of mathematical rigor while giving little weight to experiments and observations. For example, while developing special relativity Albert Einstein was concerned with the Lorentz transformation which left Maxwell's equations invariant, but was apparently uninterested in the Michelson-Morley experiment on Earth's drift through a luminiferous ether . On the other hand, Einstein was awarded the

Algebra and geometry were useful for describing size...
but an understanding of motion in time required the development of calculus Theoretical physicists use mathematics to describe certain aspects of Nature. Sir Isaac Newton was the first theoretical physicist, although in his own time his profession was called "natural philosophy".
By Newton's era people had already used algebra and geometry to build marvelous works of architecture, including the great cathedrals of Europe, but algebra and geometry only describe things that are sitting still. In order to describe things that are moving or changing in some way, Newton invented calculus
The most puzzling and intriguing moving things visible to humans have always been been the sun, the moon, the planets and the stars we can see in the night sky. Newton's new calculus , combined with his "Laws of Motion", made a mathematical model for the force of gravity that not only described the observed motions of planets and stars in the night sky, but also of swinging weights and flying cannonballs in England.
Today's theoretical physicists are often working on the boundaries of known mathematics, sometimes inventing new mathematics as they need it, like Newton did with calculus.

Welcome to the Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics!
The Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics was created to address many of the fundamental questions of the new century involving matter and spacetime. The Center aims to attract the very top young researchers in the field, as faculty, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars and to create an exciting environment fostering creative new ideas. Experts on particle physics, cosmology and string theory, traditional strengths of Berkeley, will be housed together in a single new Center. The BCTP has as its predecessor the Oppenheimer Center, created by a generous gift from Robert R. and Jane Wilson, and followed by a number of donors. It supported a cozy seminar room where countless excited and fruitful discussions took place. The Center is an outgrowth of that initiative. The BCTP will support two distinguished five-year fellows and one regular three-year postdoctoral fellow to attract the best young minds. It will bring active researchers from all over the world through its vigorous visiting scholar program. Weekly seminars will allow members to be at the forefront of research. These activities are supported by
