24. Gerard ’t Hooft, Theoretical Physics As A Challenge
How to become a good theoretical physicist GOOD THEORETICAL PHYSICIST. by Gerard 't Hooft. This is a web site (still under construction) for young students and anyone
http://www.phys.uu.nl/~thooft/theorist.html
HOW to BECOME a GOOD THEORETICAL PHYSICIST by Gerard 't Hooft This is a web site (still under construction) for young students - and anyone else - who are (like me) thrilled by the challenges posed by real science, and who are - like me - determined to use their brains to discover new things about the physical world that we are living in. In short, it is for all those who decided to study theoretical physics , in their own time. It so often happens that I receive mail - well-intended but totally useless - by amateur physicists who believe to have solved the world. They believe this, only because they understand totally nothing about the real way problems are solved in Modern Physics. If you really want to contribute to our theoretical understanding of physical laws - and it is an exciting experience if you succeed! - there are many things you need to know. First of all, be serious about it. All necessary science courses are taught at Universities, so, naturally, the first thing you should do is have yourself admitted at a University and absorb everything you can. But what if you are still young, at School, and before being admitted at a University, you have to endure the childish anecdotes that they call science there? What if you are older, and you are not at all looking forward to join those noisy crowds of young students ? I can tell you of my own experiences. I had the extreme luck of having excellent teachers around me. That helps one from running astray. It helped me all the way to earn a Nobel Prize. But I didn't have internet. I am going to try to be your teacher. It is a formidable task. I am asking students, colleagues, teachers to help me improve this site. It is presently set up only for those who wish to become theoretical physicists, not just ordinary ones, but the very best, those who are fully determined to earn their own Nobel Prize. If you are more modest than that, well, finish those lousy schools first and follow the regular routes provided by educators and specialized -gogues who are so damn carefully chewing all those tiny portions before feeding them to you. This is a site for ambitious people. I am sure that anyone can do this, if one is gifted with a certain amount of intelligence, interest and determination.

TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY
The Raymond R. and Beverly Sackler Institute of Theoretical Physics
The Raymond R. and Beverly Sackler Institute of Theoretical Physics was established in 1987 for the purpose of fostering activity in theoretical physics at Tel Aviv University. The Institute supports, in the main, one- or two-year stays of young theoretical physicists who are carrying out post-doctoral research under the supervision of senior theorists at the university. It also helps to provide funds for visits of distinguished foreign theoretical physicists who are collaborating with people at Tel Aviv. Occasionally the Institute provides other forms of assistance to the programs in theoretical physics at the university. Five Great Problems in Theoretical Physics

    See More About:
zSB(3,3) In his controversial 2006 book The Trouble with Physics: The Rise of String Theory, the Fall of a Science, and What Comes Next , theoretical physicist Lee Smolin points out "five great problems in theoretical physics."
  • The problem of quantum gravity : Combine general relativity and quantum theory into a single theory that can claim to be the complete theory of nature.
  • The foundational problems of quantum mechanics : Resolve the problems in the foundations of quantum mechanics, either by making sense of the theory as it stands or by inventing a new theory that does make sense.
  • The unification of particles and forces : Determine whether or not the various particles and forces can be unified in a theory that explains them all as manifestations of a single, fundamental entity.

It is a publicly-funded independent centre for research in basic disciplines. The Institute has three constituent schools: Each School has an independent Governing Board. The Institute, through the constituent Schools, pursues fundamental research in specialised branches of knowledge and trains advanced students in methods of original research. The institute is an academic publisher of monographs, books, and journals in Celtic Studies and on advanced scientific subjects. The Council consists of a Chairman appointed by the President , on the advice of the Government , three ex-officio members and six members appointed by the governing boards of the constituent schools. The institute is supported by a Central Administration and is financed by an annual grant from the state.

Welcome to the Theoretical Physics Research Group at the University of Birmingham.
    Theoretical Physics Research
The Theoretical Physics Research Group's research interests span a diverse spectrum of condensed matter, ultracold-atom, and nonlinear-optical systems on length scales from the microscopic through mesoscopic to the macroscopic. From the theory of quantum critical points and the physics of nanodevices to the phase transitions of vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate the research has common threads of correlation, disorder and topology.
    Theoretical Physics Courses
Members of the Theory Group are actively involved in teaching all aspects of the undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in the School of Physics at the University of Birmingham. In addition we have two specialist theory programs: Students on these courses usually have a theorist as their tutor and become active members of the research group when, in their fourth year, they undertake a research project with us.
