The thyroid gland is found in the neck inferior to (below) the thyroid cartilage (also known as the ' Adam's Apple ') and at approximately the same level as the cricoid cartilage . The thyroid controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins , and controls how sensitive the body should be to other hormones The thyroid gland participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, the principal ones being triiodothyronine (T ) and thyroxine (T ). These hormones regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. T and T are synthesized utilizing both iodine and tyrosine . The thyroid gland also produces a hormone called ' calcitonin ', which plays a role in

Why It Is Prescribed
Thyroid is a hormone produced by the body. When taken correctly, thyroid is used to treat the symptoms of hypothyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone). Symptoms of hypothyroidism include lack of energy, depression, constipation, weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, dry coarse hair, muscle cramps, decreased concentration, aches and pains, swelling of the legs, and increased sensitivity to cold. Thyroid is also used to treat goiter (enlarged thyroid gland). Thyroid is in a class of medications called thyroid agents. It works by supplying the thyroid hormone normally produced by the body.
How It Works
Thyroid comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day before breakfast. Take thyroid at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take thyroid exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

    Thyroid Disorders Thyroiditis
In medical terms, the suffix -itis means inflammation; thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid gland which may be associated with an underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism. There are five different kinds of thyroiditis. Although each different type of thyroiditis may cause different symptoms, many times they can be quite similar. In the case of thyroiditis, hypothyroidism is caused by destruction of the thyroid gland by an inflammatory process. When thyroid cells are attacked by the inflammation, these cells die. Without thyroid cells, the thyroid is no longer able to produce enough thyroid hormone to maintain the body's normal metabolism. Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland, results.
    Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
The most common cause of thyroiditis is called Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This form of thyroid disease may also be referred to as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis . As we have already discussed, this autoimmune form of thyroiditis may run in families. Additionally, families that suffer from non-thyroid autoimmune disease such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis may also be at risk for the development of Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

thyroid cancer physician specialist, and ultrasonographer. Find patient sources and weblog.
http://www.thyroid.com/
Dr.Richard Guttler , a thyroid cancer physician specialist, and thyroid ultrasonographer, is the director of the Santa Monica Thyroid Center since 1974. Dr. Guttler is the sole owner of the Endocrine Neck Laboratory of Southern California. This is an extension of the thyroid center, offering endocrine neck studies for endocrinologists and others interested in high quality thyroid studies performed personally by Dr.Guttler. He is a clinical thyroidologist, board certified in Endocrinology. Founder, secretary, and past president of The Academy of Clinical Thyroidologists. He personally treats thyroid cancer.
At the center. Dr.Richard Guttler uses the ultrasound to diagnose cancer by guiding the needle into selected areas of the suspicious nodule. This is called Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy. He is a thyroid cytopathologist, member of the American Society of Cytopathology, and prepares and reads his own biopsy slides. Also, he uses ultrasound guided ethanol injections, PEI, to treat thyroid nodules that are cystic, eliminating the need for surgery. PEI is also used to kill cancer lymph nodes in patients, when surgery is a risky option.
Dr. Guttler can help the surgeon locate abnormal nodes in previously operated neck to decrease the risk of complications, by placing a small amount of methylene blue dye on the node one hour before the surgery.

First of all, if you feel crummy, insist on thyroid testing, and get a copy of your test results. By law, your doctor must provide them to you if you ask. So ask! Interpretation of the tests is likely to be better if you are in on it, and easier if you have Thyroid Power Second, use the self-assessments provided in the book on pages 20-21, 39-40 and 55-58. They will walk you through and assist you, and your doctor, in making a proper diagnosis. For example, one thing you can do is take your basal body temperature using a sensitive ovulation thermometer, or mercury basal thermometer. This you do before you even get out of bed in the morning. Fourth, learn the side effects of too much thyroid. These include: rapid heartbeat, unusual difficulty sleeping, sweating and otherwise feeling hot, hyperactivity, a racing mind, and twitching. Contrary to popular medical myth, thyroid medication does not cause osteoporosis; it helps prevent it.

    Thyroid Disease Support Information
NEWS: There is an accurate TSH home test available from Blood Test At Home for $25.99. While TSH may not be helpful to titrate ongoing treatment it is an excellent screening tool to monitor your need for treatment. TSH should be below 2.0, typically 1.3 or so in healthy persons. If yours is higher, consult your physician. If you need to monitor your treatment (how much thyroid do you need?) thyroid panels are available from Private MD (link is to a standard panel but for monitoring treatment consider the "TSH, free T3 and free T4" combo which you will find by clicking on the test categories / thyroid) Private MD Labs offers a 15% discount (discount link on their home page) so a TSH, free T3 and free T4 panel ($78) will be only $67. As February of 2009 a reformulation of Armour thyroid in the US seems to have dramatically reduced its effectiveness. The manufacturer increased the amount of cellulose which in fact can bind nutrients/elements. It is possible to find natural thyroid, Westhroid and Naturethroid, in the US but they seem to be in short supply and are more expensive. This is devastating to many people who have worked so hard to 'get well'. Hopefully Armour will reconsider and return to their old formula. Do let them know you care. It is possible to find dessicated thyroid outside the US. Please note: Low levels of dietary protein, omega-3, potassium, zinc, copper, lithium, selenium, and magnesium affect your thyroid gland function. It is possible to test positive for hypo, hyper or auto-immune thyroid disease and yet correct the abnormal tests with excellent nutrition. Unless your thyroid disease symptoms are severe or life threatening you may want to try improving your nutrition before you commit to life long use of thyroid hormone. If you already take thyroid medication a good nutritional program will help you be as healthy as possible and allow your medication to work better. Do not stop medication without notifying your physician. Autoimmune thyroid disease almost always requires medication ongoing.
