Functional Anatomy of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands
Thyroid glands are located in the neck, in close approximation to the first part of the trachea. In humans, the thyroid gland has a "butterfly" shape, with two lateral lobes that are connected by a narrow section called the isthmus. Most animals, however, have two separate glands on either side of the trachea. Thyroid glands are brownish-red in color. Close examination of a thyroid gland will reveal one or more small, light-colored nodules on or protruding from its surface - these are parathyroid glands (meaning "beside the thyroid"). The image to the right shows a canine thyroid gland and one attached parathyroid gland. The microscopic structure of the thyroid is quite distinctive. Thyroid epithelial cells - the cells responsible for synthesis of thyroid hormones - are arranged in spheres called thyroid follicles . Follicles are filled with colloid , a proteinaceous depot of thyroid hormone precursor. In the low (left) and high-magnification (right) images of a cat thyroid below, follicles are cut in cross section at different levels, appearing as roughly circular forms of varying size. In standard histologic preparations such as these, colloid stains pink. In addition to thyroid epithelial cells, the thyroid gland houses one other important endocrine cell. Nestled in spaces between thyroid follicles are

THYROID DISORDERS
Your thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located just below your Adam's apple. The thyroid produces hormones that affect your body's metabolism and energy level. Thyroid problems are among the most common medical conditions but, because their symptoms often appear gradually, they are commonly misdiagnosed. The three most common thyroid problems are the underactive thyroid , the overactive thyroid and thyroid nodules
HYPOTHYROIDISM (Underactive thyroid)
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In this condition, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.
Common symptoms of hypothyroidism are:
  • Fatigue or lack of energy Weight gain Feeling cold Dry skin and hair Heavy menstrual periods Constipation Slowed thinking
D IAGNOSIS of hypothyroidism is usually straightforward, once it is suspected. Patients with hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis have an elevated level of serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). However, the rare patient with hypothyroidism due to a pituitary or hypothalamic condition may have a normal or low serum TSH. T REATMENT of hypothyroidism consists of taking thyroid hormone in pill form on a daily basis. Symptoms of hypothyroidism should clear up within a few months of starting treatment. Adjustment of the dose of thyroid pills is based upon measurements of serum TSH. Most patients need to take thyroid hormone for life.

TSH : Thyroid stimulating hormone: measures pituitary dysfunction
T4 free : Measures availability of thyroxine, representing 75% of thyroid hormone -functions to normalize size of thyroid gland
T3 free: Measures availability of tri-iodothyronine: the active thyroid hormone- must be converted from T4 to active hormone T3 in peripheral tissue.
TBG : Thyroid binding globulin: Elevated in states of sex hormone excess
TPO : Thyroid peroxidase: indirect measure of iodine and selenium deficiencies. Denotes destruction of the thyroid gland producing iodine and tyrosine from T3 and T4.
Thyroid Antibodies: Present in Grave's disease. Antibodies to TSH hormone.
Reverse T3 : Levels elevated when synthetic thyroid has triggered production of blocking hormone deactivating needed T3 . Makes a R- T3 instead of a L- T3. Only Left- T3isomer is active. ANATOMY: The thyroid gland is positioned below the Adam's apple and is shaped like a bow-tie. This walnut sized gland secretes the thyroid hormones that regulates all the functions of all the cells in the body. Thyroid hormone is necessary for every cell to forge energy (in the Krebs's cycle). Without thyroid, there is a lack of efficient energy product and therefore lethargy and carbohydrate craving . This is called thyroid deficiency syndrome

Encyclopedia of Public Health:
Thyroid Disorders
Home Library Health Public Health Encyclopedia Thyroid disorders fall into two general categories:(1) dysfunction of thyroid hormone production; and (2) development of thyroid enlargements, called goiters, which include generalized enlargement of the gland and benign and malignant nodules. Thyroid dysfunction results either from increased or decreased secretion of thyroid hormones, called hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, respectively. Normal Thyroid Function The principal role of the thyroid gland is to manufacture, store, and secrete the thyroid hormones, l-thyroxine and l-triiodothyronine. A critical and unique component of these hormones is their iodine content: 4 atoms of iodine per molecule for l-thyroxine (T4) and 3 atoms per molecule for l-triiodothyronine (T3). Iodine is a trace element in the crust of the earth, and the thyroid has evolved mechanisms to concentrate iodine from the blood plasma and retain it for the manufacture of the thyroid hormones. Once made, the hormones are stored within a protein molecule, called thyroglobulin, within tiny follicles that are lined with thyroid cells. In a controlled manner, thyroglobulin is taken back into the thyroid cells, degraded by enzymes and the thyroid hormone that is released is secreted into the circulating blood. Function of the thyroid gland uniquely and absolutely requires thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH; also known as thyrotroptin), which is secreted by specific cells in the anterior pituitary gland. Secretion of TSH is also negatively controlled by the blood concentrations of thyroid hormones. In this classic negative feedback system, excessive serum concentrations of thyroid hormones decrease secretion of TSH, and decreased serum thyroid hormones increase serum TSH. In the normal individual, the serum concentrations both of TSH and thyroid hormones are within the normal range.

      Thyroid
Generic Name: thyroid (desiccated) (THYE roid (DES i kay ted))
      Brand names: Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, Westhroid, Thyroid Porcine adArray = new Array(['first_ad_unit',3]);
      What is thyroid?
Desiccated (dried) thyroid is a combination of hormones that are normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Desiccated thyroid is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own. Desiccated thyroid treats hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). It is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), and is also given as part of a medical tests for thyroid disorders. This medicine should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems.
      Important information about thyroid
Since thyroid hormone occurs naturally in the body, almost anyone can take thyroid. However, you may not be able to use this medication if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment. Before taking thyroid, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, angina (chest pain), coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, diabetes, or problems with your adrenal glands.

What is the Thyroid? The thyroid is a small gland, shaped like a butterfly, located in the lower part of your neck. The function of a gland is to secrete hormones. The main hormones released by the thyroid are triiodothyronine, abbreviated as T3, and thyroxine, abbreviated as T4. These thyroid hormones deliver energy to cells of the body.
What Diseases and Conditions Affect the Thyroid? The most common problems that develop in the thyroid include: zSB(3,3)
    • Hypothyroidism An underactive thyroid. Hyperthyroidism An overactive thyroid. Goiter An enlarged thyroid. Thyroid Nodules Lumps in the thyroid gland. Thyroid Cancer Malignant thyroid nodules or tissue.
