Tibet History
Tibetan history can be traced back to thousands of years. However, the written history dates back to the seventh century from the reign of Emperor Songtsän Gampo who combined many areas and tribes of the region and formed his empire. He sent his minister Sambhota to India to study Sanskrit who on his return invented the present Tibetan script based on Sanskrit and inscription of history started. From the early 1600 the Dalai Lamas, known as spiritual leaders of the region and believed to be the emanations of Avalokitesvara, hold the power. Between the 17th century and 1959, the Dalai Lama and his regents were the principal political power controlling religious and administrative authority over Tibet from the traditional capital Lhasa, which was regarded as the most sacred city of Tibet. Administratively the region is divided into one municipality and six prefectures. The municipality is Lhasa, while the six prefectures are Shigatse, Ngari, Lhaoka, Chamdo, Nakchu and Nyingtri (Kongpo). The People's Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region exercises the highest administrative authority in Tibet.

        Early History
Evidence of human habitation dating between 12,000 and 11,000 years ago has been found in NW Tibet, and in S Tibet the Yarlung Zangbo valley was, over the centuries, the focus of ancient trade routes from India, China, and Central Asia. Foreign Contacts
During the 18th cent., British authorities in India attempted to establish relations with Lhasa, but the Gurkha invasion of 1788 and the subsequent Gurkha war (1792) with Tibet brought an abrupt end to the rapprochement. Jesuits and Capuchins had visited Tibet in the 17th and 18th cent., but throughout the 19th cent. Tibet maintained its traditional seclusion. Meanwhile, Ladakh , long part of Tibet, was lost to the rulers of Kashmir, and Sikkim was detached (1890) by Britain. In 1893, Britain succeeded in obtaining a trading post at Yadong, but continued Tibetan interference led to the military expedition (1904) of Sir Francis Younghusband
        Tibet and China
The Panchen Lama, who had accepted Chinese sponsorship, acceded to the spiritual leadership of Tibet. The Chinese adopted brutal repressive measures, provoking charges from the Dalai Lama of genocide. Landholdings were seized, the lamaseries were virtually emptied, and thousands of monks were forced to find other work. The Panchen Lama was deposed in 1964 after making statements supporting the Dalai Lama; he was replaced by a secular Tibetan leader. In 1962, China launched attacks along the Indian-Tibetan border to consolidate territories it claimed had been wrongly given to India by the British McMahon Commission in 1914. Following a cease-fire, Chinese troops withdrew behind the disputed line in the east but continued to occupy part of Ladakh in Kashmir. Some border areas are still in dispute.

Hair ... more Chat about Tibet history and religion At that time, you will certainly say to the deep-blue sky, "How I wish to see you again, Tibet!" Tibet is worth people"s clinging to and cherishing in the bosom, because it is almost limitless in size, peerlessly beautiful, without the need for any decoration. The whole "individual" cannot but feel a great admiration for it surging up in his/her chest when standing face to face with it. As an "individual" you would be deeply conscious of your own "minuteness". You would feel that the matter that worried you yesterday is no longer of any importance today. Life is for its own reason far more important and far more precious than anything else. To many people, an attempt to describe the beautiful scenery of Tibet by using poems would be either naivete or a pretension to sophistication. Therefore, I can only give you hereunder a realistic sketch of the place.
The Tibetan people call themselves "Bod". But in ancient times their neighbouring peoples, especially the Tujues, called them "Tu Bod". From a linguistic point of view, the word Tu may have been an article in the Tujue language, somewhat like the definite article "the" of the English language. The Tujue people were once very strong but perished completely during the Tang Dynasty of China. Later, the Mongols became powerful. They continued to use the name "Tu Bod", for historical or linguistic reasons, to call the Tibetans and with the expansion of the territory under their domination carried this word into Arabia and then through the Arabians into Europe, where the word was changed into "Tibet". In the Chinese language Tibet is called "Xi Zang". The hieroglyphic word pronounced xi denotes "west", while the hieroglyphic word pronounced zang means "the Buddhist scripture" or "Buddhist disciples".

In ancient history it is believed that the first generation of Tibetans were the six offspring of a holy monkey and mountain ogress who first appeared in the Yarlung Valley. It is believed that the monkey was a manifestation of Avalokitesvara and the mountain ogress a manifestation of Green Tara. As the legend goes, the monkey and mountain ogress married on the mountain Gongpo Ri in Tsetang. Six monkey offspring were given birth and gradually those six offspring multiplied to five hundred monkeys. Later on, after the number of the monkeys had rapidly increased, the monkeys faced a food shortage in the mountains. Gradually they learnt how to grow crops and were transformed into human beings.
As time went by, they realised they needed a leader to rule the country. One day, as they were grazing their animals, some herdsmen bumped into a particularly good looking man, who stood out from the local inhabitants. They asked him where he came from whereupon he just pointed his fingers to the sky without speaking. The herdsmen believed him to be an angel from heaven and carried him on their shoulders and made him their king, naming him Nyatri Tsenpo in Tibetan (meaning shoulder-throned king) and thus began the history of Tibetan kings in the 2nd century B.C. TIBETAN HISTORY The history of Tibet is generally divided into four periods.
