by MARTIN DeANGELIS USA (6 Sep 2005) Tom Maddox has gone exploring on hundreds of shipwrecks - or is it thousands? - in his decades as a scuba diver and teacher. But he'd never been more than 210 feet below the surface until a few weeks ago, after an old friend offered him the chance to see the world's most famous wreck with his own two eyes. The only problem is that the Titanic is about 12,500 feet, or almost 2 1/2 miles, under the cold, crashing waters of the North Atlantic. But Maddox, an owner of East Coast Diving Supply here, had an expert guide taking him and another member of his expedition with him for the long trip down in a tiny, high-tech Russian submarine that's so used to alien environments, it's named Mir - just like the space station. Still, 2 1/2 miles of water isn't just one problem, it's a world of problems. There's the water temperature, which was just 36 degrees at the Titanic's depth that August day, so cold that the temperature inside the sub dropped to about 50 degrees as the frigid water pressed on the walls after they were down there a while. And they were down there a long while, because Maddox was part of a documentary team put together by David Concannon, a lawyer who splits his time between Ocean City and Wayne, Pa. The expedition mission was to film a History Channel special on previously unexplored parts of the wreck site from the ship's April 15, 1912, sinking. It takes a Mir 21/2 hours to drop down to the ocean floor and the about the same to climb back up, so to get any meaningful time at the bottom doing his job - Maddox was there to scout out and shoot television-quality video - he ended up being in the sub for 12 hours.

"I walked out on the deck to appreciate a calm blue sea and there it was," said Gallo, of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts. "It was totally unexpected and it had a profound impact on those of us on deck." WHOI scientists first discovered the Titanic's final resting place nearly 25 years ago.

On this page we tell the stories of just some of the shipwrecks that we found interesting: TITANIC: Probably the most famous shipwreck is the Titanic. It was thought to be unsinkable, but when on April 14, 1912, it hit an iceberg, the Titanic sunk in the North Atlantic. Fifteen hundred people lost their lives. The remains of the Titanic were finally discovered more than 70 years after the sinking by a man named Robert Ballard. He used a small submarine to descend two and a half miles to the Atlantic sea bottom. There he discovered the Titanic had split in half with each half almost 2,000 feet from the other facing in opposite directions. Empress of Ireland Just two years after the Titanic, another terrible shipwreck took the lives of many people. It was the ramming of the Empress of Ireland by a coal ship called the Storstad in the St. Lawrence River on May 29, 1914. The cause of the accident was blamed on heavy, thick fog. The captain of the Empress of Ireland saw the Storstad just moments before the impact. There were more than one thousand passengers, most of them sleeping in their cabins. The Empress of Ireland sank within fourteen minutes to a depth of 130 feet. Before sinking, the ship rolled on its side preventing the launching of all the lifeboats. Of the 1,477 on the ship, 1,012 died. The Empress of Ireland never gained the fame of the Titanic because it wasn't as large or luxurious and it never claimed to be unsinkable. The Lusitania

New discoveries from Titanic shipwreck suggest Robert Ballard got it wrong
Powered by CDNN - CYBER DIVER News Network FALMOUTH, Massachusetts (6 Dec 2005) Undersea explorers said Monday that the discovery of more wreckage from the Titanic suggests that the luxury liner broke into three sections not two, as commonly thought and thus sank faster than previously believed. "The breakup and sinking of the Titanic has never been accurately depicted," Parks Stephenson, a Titanic historian, said at a conference at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. The ocean liner that was billed as "unsinkable" by its owner struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage and went down in the North Atlantic on April 14, 1912. About 1,500 people were killed. Undersea explorer Robert Ballard located the bulk of the wreck in 1985, at a depth of about 4,000 metres and about 610 kilometres southeast of Newfoundland. He declared that the ship had broken into two major sections, and that is the way the sinking was portrayed in the 1997 movie about the catastrophe. However, the latest expedition, sponsored by the History Channel, found two hull pieces, each roughly 12 metres by 27 metres and lying about 500 metres from the rest of the wreck. The explorers said the location of the wreckage indicates that the ship's bottom came off the ship intact constituting a third major piece and later broke in two.

A new analysis of passenger survival rates aboard the Titanic reveals interesting cultural differences. Behavioral economists, David Savage and Bruno Frey found that British passengers had a 10 percent lower chance of survival than any other nationality aboard the Titanic. These findings contracted their original hypothesis: "The Titanic was built in Great Britain, operated by British subjects, and manned by a British crew. It is to be expected that national ties were activated during the disaster and that the crew would give preference to British subjects, easily identified by their language." The survival rate for American passengers was 12 percent higher than the British. Americans reportedly fought their way to the lifeboats, whereas the British politely waited in line. Savage and Frey's analysis revealed other disparities in survival rate. More women survived than men and children (aged 15 or younger) were more likely to live than elderly.
