    TMJ Disorders
Temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders, commonly called "TMJ," are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. We don’t know for certain how many people have TMJ disorders, but some estimates suggest that over 10 million Americans are affected. The condition appears to be more common in women than men. For most people, pain in the area of the jaw joint or muscles does not signal a serious problem. Generally, discomfort from these conditions is occasional and temporary, often occurring in cycles. The pain eventually goes away with little or no treatment. Some people, however, develop significant, long-term symptoms. If you have questions about TMJ disorders, you are not alone. Researchers, too, are looking for answers to what causes these conditions and what are the best treatments. Until we have scientific evidence for safe and effective treatments, it’s important to avoid, when possible, procedures that can cause permanent changes in your bite or jaw. This booklet provides information you should know if you have been told by a dentist or physician that you have a TMJ disorder.

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a small joint located in front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. It permits the lower jaw (mandible) to move and function. TMJ disorders are not uncommon and have a variety of symptoms. Patients may complain of earaches, headaches and limited ability to open their mouth. They may also complain of clicking or grating sounds in the joint and feel pain when opening and closing their mouth. What must be determined, of course, is the cause.
What Causes TMJ Disorders?
Determining the cause of a TMJ problem is important, because it is the cause that guides the treatment. Arthritis is one cause of TMJ symptoms. It can result from an injury or from grinding the teeth at night. Another common cause involves displacement or dislocation of the disk that is located between the jawbone and the socket. A displaced disk may produce clicking or popping sounds, limit jaw movement and cause pain when opening and closing the mouth. The disk can also develop a hole or perforation, which can produce a grating sound with joint movement. There are also conditions such as trauma or rheumatoid arthritis that can cause the parts of the TMJ to fuse, preventing jaw movement altogether.

Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)

Dr. Melnick is an experienced neuromuscular dentist. He's the only dentist in Laurel, Maryland and the surrounding area who has special interest in advanced and effective TMJ treatments. Some patients who have lived a lifetime of pain are relieved of symptoms in as little as 24 hours.
Misaligned bite
TMJ is a painful and debilitating neuromuscular disorder related to your bite. Some people with TMJ suffer for years from symptoms that they never realize are related to their teeth. After they fail to achieve any relief from doctor visits, many give up on finding a solution. When your bite is out of alignment, the lower jaw is opening and closing in an incorrect position. This puts long-term strain on the muscles and ligaments of the jaw joint, the temporomandibular joint. Long-term strain on the soft tissue in turn puts strain on the bones themselves. There are some large nerves in the jaw joint area which run down into the neck and shoulders, as well as across the face. The stress of repeated off-center movement ends by creating recurrent pain in the head, face, neck and shoulder areas. The pain from

TMJ Syndrome Overview
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome is pain in the jaw joint that can be caused by a variety of medical problems. The TMJ connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of the ear. Certain facial muscles control chewing. Problems in this area can cause head and neck pain, facial pain, ear pain, headaches, a jaw that is locked in position or difficult to open, problems biting, and jaw clicking or popping sounds when you bite.
