The German colony of Togoland covered 90,500 sq. km, but when it was divided up after the First World War the British added their portion to the Gold Coast (now Ghana). Today, at 56,785 sq. km, Togo is one of the smallest counties in Africa. Even so, it is bigger than Belgium (30,510 sq. km), Switzerland (41,290 sq. km) or Wales (20,768 sq. km). Togo is between Ghana to the west and Benin to the east, with Burkina Faso to the north and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. It is a long, narrow country. In the south Togo is just 55km from west to east. In the extreme north-west of the country a narrow finger of land stretches out to cross the Prime Meridian. Most of Togo is relatively flat, but a chain of mountains extends from the Kpalimé area in the south-west to the north-eastern part of the country. The summit of the highest peak, Mt. Agou, is 986 metres above sea level. Climate o c even in the hottest months (February-April), although temperatures of over 40 o c are not uncommon in the dry north. Most of the rainfall comes in the wet season, between March and November. The dry months bring the harmattan , a dusty wind from the Sahara Desert which dramatically lowers temperatures and reduces visibility.

The Togo geography provides for interesting study as the geographical features of the region can be actually distinguished under six categories. Lying just on the edge of the Sahara Desert and off the Atlantic Coast, Togo has a unique climactic condition. Togo is surrounded by Ghana, lying to the west, Benin lying to the east and Burkina Faso to the north the north. The Latitude and longitude of Togo corresponds to 8° north and 1°10' east. The gross land area of Togo covers up to 56,785 square km of which 2400 square km is water body. The Prominent Geographic Divisions of Togo
    • The Plateau Region: This is comprised of the Quatchi Plateau which is differently known as Terre de Barre. The plateau lies at an average of 75 meters above the sea level.
    • The Lake Regions: Apart from the many lagoons, there are several water bodies of which lake Togo region is the most important.
    • The Mountain Regions: the Chaine du Togo and mountain Togo and Mount Agou are the most important mountains. The Togo Mountains are not confined to the boundaries of Togo but actually extend over to Ghana and Benin.
    • The Rivers: the most prominent rivers comprise River Oti, River Volta and River Mono. River Mono flows through the Quatchi plateau.

    Facts about Togo
World Facts Index French Togoland became Togo in 1960. Gen. Gnassingbe EYADEMA, installed as military ruler in 1967, ruled Togo with a heavy hand for almost four decades. Despite the facade of multiparty elections instituted in the early 1990s, the government was largely dominated by President EYADEMA, whose Rally of the Togolese People (RPT) party has maintained power almost continually since 1967 and maintains a majority of seats in today's legislature. Upon EYADEMA's death in February 2005, the military installed the president's son, Faure GNASSINGBE, and then engineered his formal election two months later. Democratic gains since then allowed Togo to hold its first relatively free and fair legislative elections in October 2007. After years of political unrest and fire from international organizations for human rights abuses, Togo is finally being re-welcomed into the international community.
