    Geography
    A group of three coral atolls north of Samoa, a total of 10 square kilometers , half way between Hawaii and New Zealand. Highest point: 5 meters (16.4 feet).
    History and Government
    A British protectorate from 1889. Transferred to New Zealand in 1925. Chief of state: Queen Elizabeth II. Administrator from New Zealand. Legislators for a 21-seat body elected by popular vote to three-year terms.

    Figures unless otherwise stated are from the CIA Factbook.
    Estimated per capita GDP for 1993: $1,000. (Ranks 213th) Factbook: "Tokelau's small size (three villages), isolation, and lack of resources greatly restrain economic development and confine agriculture to the subsistence level. The people rely heavily on aid from New Zealand - about $4 million annually to maintain public services, with annual aid being substantially greater than GDP."
