Visit the Virtual Tonga Photo Library Tonga is unique among Pacific nations because it never completely lost its indigenous governance. The archipelagos of "The Friendly Islands" were united into a Polynesian kingdom in 1845. Tonga became a constitutional monarchy in 1875 and a British protectorate in 1900; it withdrew from the protectorate and joined the Commonwealth of Nations in 1970. Tonga remains the only monarchy in the Pacific. The Tongan archipelago has been inhabited for perhaps 3000 years, since settlement in late Lapita times. Before the arrival of European explorers in the late 1600s and early 1700s, the Tongans were in frequent contact with their nearest Oceanic neighbors, Fiji and Samoa. In the 1800s, with the arrival of Western traders and missionaries, Tongan culture changed dramatically. Some old beliefs and habits were thrown away, and othersadopted. Some changes made in the 1800s and early 1900s are now being challenged by changing Western civilization. Hence Tongan culture is far from a unified or monolithic affair, and Tongans themselves may differ strongly as to what is "Tongan". Contemporary Tongans often have strong ties to overseas lands. They may have been migrant workers in New Zealand, or have lived and traveled in New Zealand, Australia, or the United States. Many Tongans now live overseas, in a Tongan diaspora, and send home remittances to family members (often aged) who prefer to remain in Tonga. Tongans themselves often have to operate in two different contexts, which they often call anga fakatonga, the traditional Tongan way, and anga fakapālangi, the Western way. A culturally adept Tongan learns both sets of rules and when to switch between them.

Weaving with the leaves of the pandanus palm is at its zenith as an art form in Tonga, and baskets and intricately worked mats produced by a variety of means are among the most beautiful in the Pacific. A reasonable body of literature has been produced in or about the archipelago in spite of its tiny size, and some of it goes beyond oral histories and folk tales. The earliest accounts are by castaway Will Mariner and Captain Bligh after he lost command of his ship. There are also several more recent collections of poetry and prose by contemporary writers.

Tonga Culture and Kava
The Tongan culture has drastically changes over the years. Before the European explorers arrived in the late 1600s and early 1700s, the Tongans were already in constant contact with their geographic neighbors, Samoa and Fiji.
At the dawn of the 1800s, during the arrival of the Western traders and missionaries, the Tongan culture changed a lot as some of the old beliefs were thrown out as a number of belief were adopted from other countries.
Contemporary Tongans frequently have strong ties overseas lands. Some of them would opt to migrate in other countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Thus, Tongans are known to have been guilty of "diaspora".
Tongans often have to operate in two contexts, which they refer to as the traditional Tongan way, and the Western way.
All Polynesian cultures, including the Tongan culture are strongly stratified. In the past, the king (tu'i) with the royal family was on top of the stratification. Below him were the high chiefs (hou'eiki), the estate holders and warlords.
On the other hand, in the contemporary context, the king is still in this position and has the final implementation or execution power. The high chiefs are now limited to 33 titles and called nobles (nopele), but some nobles carry more than one title. They are still considered as estate holders, but then, they are not the government.

Tongan culture is as important to Tonga now as it ever has been, and If you are planning to visit the Kingdom of Tonga / 'Eua island, learning a little about the culture, will allow you to get the most out of your visit to the Kingdom. If you can understand a little of why Tongans are the way they are and learn a little about there background then your visit to the Kingdom of Tonga will be that little bit richer. Luckily the Tongan culture is still very much in tacked and you will see people wearing woven mats, making Tapa cloth cooking in the ground and roasting pigs on the spit. Try : Registry Cleaner Download Life in Tonga is pretty much the same as it has been for hundreds of years, yes we have cars, flushing toilets (well some of us do) and the internet, but as you will see coming to the Kingdom is like stepping back in time especially in the outer islands like 'Eua island or Ha'apai. The Tongan culture is proud, conservative and in-grained into ever Tongan on the islands.

Tonga’s people are Polynesian, with a total population of about 101,134. Tonga is very much about its people and culture. Tongans are welcoming, relaxed and generally happy and easygoing. Tongans are perhaps most renowned for their girth, their musical talent and the nation’s inimitable sense of hospitality. Tongans enjoy the beach, collecting from the sea, singing and dancing. Any occasion, big or small, can become a good reason for getting together to celebrate with friends and family.
Lifestyle
The family is the central unit of Tongan life. Each family member plays a role, with older persons commanding the most respect. A typical family unit may consist of adopted children, cousins and other distant relatives, alongside the usual smattering of siblings and grandparents. Everything is communal, from food to sleeping arrangements, although brothers and sisters always sleep under separate roofs in accordance with the Tonga culture of sibling separation and respect.
Chores are distributed according to gender: men tend the ’umu (underground oven), grow and harvest food, collect and husk coconuts and perform all manual labour. The women clean, wash clothes, prepare and cook food, and take on the lion’s share of child-minding responsibilities. The patriarch is generally the head of the family, and land passes down from a father to his eldest son.

The Valley Tonga 27 Dec 2005 The Valley Tonga live in the middle Zambezi Valley on both sides of the Zambezi River in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Upstream is the Victoria Falls, downstream is Kariba Dam. The Valley Tonga are the third largest ethnic group in Zimbabwe after the Shona and Ndebele.
The best known fact about the Tonga is that they were forcibly removed from the banks of the Zambezi River forty years ago to make way for the building of Kariba. Once deported from their habitat, they were abandoned.
In recent years, they have gained some outside attention largely through the beauty of their material culture (in particular their basket work and their goblet drums) which have become popular with the tourist trade.
Before the dam, the Tonga were able to grow two crops a year. Their winter gardens were made possible by the flooding of the Zambezi river which brought rich alluvial soils every year. The ground they now live on since their displacement is desperately poor and barely sustains one yearly crop of drought-resistant sorghum. Furthermore, they are plagued by damage done to their crops from wildlife which they are now forbidden to hunt.
The Tonga are a marginalised people who do not share in the luxuries of modern life in Zimbabwe. Until recently, they viewed outsiders with suspicion and their remote position has not encouraged investment in the area. Even the advantages of electricity and tourism which Kariba dam brought to the cities, have bypassed the Tonga almost completely.
