OBITUARY
Raoul Bott; theorems advanced topology, geometry
THE BOSTON GLOBE and NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE January 15, 2006 "I'm just testing the strength of the chains and the length of the swing," Raoul Bott told his son. A curious sight, perhaps, but not unusual. Dr. Bott spent a prestigious academic career thinking deeply about how to view surfaces and spaces. His field was topology and geometry, and as a mathematician he had few peers at the end of the 20th century. Dr. Bott, 82, professor emeritus at Harvard University, died of cancer Dec. 20 at his home in Carlsbad. On the history wall in the Mathematica room at Boston's Museum of Science, his name appears twice – once with one of the exhibit's shortest entries: "1959 Bott periodicity theorem." The brevity of the entry, which falls on the wall a few centuries to the right of figures such as Isaac Newton and Copernicus, belies its significance. "It came as a great surprise and provided a whole set of new tools," said Michael Atiyah of the University of Edinburgh, who later collaborated with Dr. Bott on refinements of mathematical index theory. "Astonishingly, it has also proved useful in the fundamental physics of string theory."

Title: Topology, geometry, and equations of normal surface singularities
Authors: Jonathan Wahl (Submitted on 5 Sep 2005) Abstract: This expository talk is an expanded version of a lecture at G.-M. Greuel's 60th Birthday Conference in Kaiserslautern in October, 2004. We survey recent work of Neumann-Wahl and others on the relation between topology and geometry of normal surface singularities, especially how to write explicit equations of a singularity with given topology, in case the link is a rational homology sphere (i.e., the resolution graph is a tree of rational curves). Specifically, under some reasonable conditions on the link, there is an explicit "complete intersection of splice type" whose link is the universal abelian cover of the original one, and for which the action of the covering group can be explicitly described. Recent work of T. Okuma shows every rational surface singularity can be described in this way. Full details are found in papers in Geometry and Topology, math.AG/0301165
