With topics that range from murder ("Quick Death"), the passing of loved ones ("Sad But True"), to failed friendships ("We Trusted You"), we wrote songs that I think everyone can identify with for the most part. There's even a party song on the album ("Tall Cans in the Air"). Don't jump to conclusions though. It's by no means a happy/fun song. You're more likely to make an enemy than a friend with this one. Anyways, everyone goes through shit in life, some more than others. Some people choose to ignore it and think it will disappear. Not gonna happen. At least not while you're listening to the TRANSPLANTS record.

What Is a Heart Transplant?
A heart transplant is surgery to remove a person's diseased heart and replace it with a healthy heart from a deceased donor. Ninety percent of heart transplants are done on patients who have end-stage heart failure Heart failure is a condition in which the heart is damaged or weakened and can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. "End-stage" means the condition has become so severe that all treatments, other than heart transplant, have failed.
Overview
Heart transplants are done as a life-saving measure for end-stage heart failure when medical treatment and less drastic surgery have failed. Because donor hearts are in short supply, patients who need a heart transplant go through a careful selection process. They need to be sick enough to need a new heart, yet healthy enough to receive it. Survival rates for people receiving heart transplants have improved over the past 5 to 10 years, especially in the first year after the transplant.

Changing Chances of Success
In spite of the many new drugs as well as ever more fancy drug combinations that begin to look like an alphabet soup, to this date the only therapy that has a proven ability to cure CLL A lot has changed in the past few years, as far as allo stem cell transplants are concerned. A decade ago, the only allo (short for "allogeneic") stem cell transplants done were very heavy-duty affairs. The patient went through very heavy chemotherapy, as well as high dose full body radiation as the preparatory regimen. The idea is to kill each and every cancer cell in the body, and by this process kill all the stem cells and other immune system cells as well. The technical name for this take-no-prisoners approach is “myeloablative”. The preconditioning regimen for a myeloablative transplant was so tough that patients had to meet strict age limit as well as general fitness limit to be eligible for stem cell transplants. You can read more of the details of how stem cell transplants are done in our Primer on Bone Marrow SCTs . Most of the time, the donors were related to the patient, since at that time we did not know enough about matching different HLA types to use unrelated donors (

Kidney Transplant
Overview
Kidney failure due to kidney disease occurs when your kidneys' function falls to 15 to 20 percent of their capacity. At this point, you'll need dialysis or transplantation to preserve your life. In many people, it's not necessary to start dialysis prior to transplantation. You will receive a thorough evaluation to determine whether you're a candidate for a transplant . If you're approved, your transplant care team will explain the entire transplant process
Why choose Mayo Clinic
The Mayo Clinic Kidney Transplant Program is among the largest in the country, performing hundreds of kidney transplants each year. Mayo Clinic transplant doctors emphasize living donor kidney transplants and transplantation before initiation of dialysis. Other hallmarks of the program include unique transplant options, such as paired kidney donation, ABO incompatible kidney transplant and positive crossmatch kidney transplantation. The program has particular interest in individuals with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and kidney transplantation in people who have a kidney disease that is likely to recur after transplant.

US History Encyclopedia:
Transplants And Organ Donation
Home Library US History Encyclopedia Transplantation (grafting) is the replacement of a failing organ or tissue by a functioning one. Transplantation was a dream in antiquity. The Hindu deity Ganesha had his head replaced by an elephant's head soon after birth (Rig-Veda, 1500 B.C.). In the Christian tradition Saints Cosmas and Damian (fl. 3rd century A.D.) are famous for replacing the diseased leg of a true believer with the leg of a dark-skinned Moor, thereby becoming the patron saints of physicians and surgeons. Transplantation may be from the same person ( autologous allograft can come from a genetically identical twin, genetically close parent or sibling, living unrelated person, or cadaver ) or from a different species ( xenotransplant Human tissues carry highly specific antigens grafts ) are therefore well tolerated. Homologous grafts are plagued by attempted rejection by the recipient human. The biological acceptability of the graft is measured by tissue typing of the donor and recipient using the human leucocyte antigen, or HLA, panels. The closer the match between the donor and the recipient, the greater the chance of graft acceptance and function. Xenotransplantation is as yet entirely experimental because of tissue rejection and the possibility of transmitting animal diseases to the human recipient.

Underlying Diseases
Organ transplants don't often "just happen." For a vital organ to lose so much function that it needs to be replaced, some disease has progressed to the point that it's causing serious problems. While the underlying cause is sometimes unknown (a single-digit percentage of cases), some underlying diseases are pretty frequent in the transplant world. Despite the commonalities of the transplant experience between patients, specific diseases tend to share an even more common experience. Also, many of these diseases have effects, stories, and communities that go beyond the subset that are transplant-specific. To highlight some of the places where transplant patients come from, this post is a summary of four specific underlying diseases.
Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is what happens when the body has a lack of insulin activity, either because insulin can't be produced (Type 1 diabetes) or it can't be used (Type 2 diabetes). It's an extremely common disease, affecting 20.8 million Americans in 2005. Diabetes doesn't just affect sugar metabolism, but the use of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. It can affect almost every organ system, including kidneys, peripheral nerves, eyes, and blood vessels of all types. A number of treatments are available, from medications of all types to injected insulin to insulin pumps to better regulate blood glucose levels to transplants.
