Financing a Transplant
The Costs
The cost of a transplant, including preliminary testing, the surgery itself and post-operative recovery costs vary across the country and depend on the hospital and organ type. These costs start to add up, even before your transplant. Therefore, patients commonly rely on several sources to help pay for their medical and non-medical costs of pre- and post-transplantation.
Medical Costs
Medical costs include:
  • insurance deductibles insurance co-pays pre-transplant evaluation and testing surgery fees for the recovery of the organ from the donor follow-up care and testing additional hospital stays for complications fees for surgeons, physicians, radiologist, anesthesiologist and recurrent lab testing

PREPARING FOR HARSH WINTER As a transplant, the most crucial things to plan ahead for are medicines and medical supplies. Begin now to collect extra supplies that you need on a daily basis. Keep them in a separate container and use only during that emergency time. Watch your supply of medications. Always have a 2-7 day supply on hand. That means you cannot wait until the last minute to order!

    Bone Marrow Transplant
Bone marrow transplant (BMT or blood and marrow transplant) is offered at all three Mayo Clinic locations. Begun in Rochester in 1982, the bone marrow transplant program expanded to Jacksonville in 1992 and Arizona in 1993. The BMT program follows the Mayo Clinic vision of a unified system on multiple campuses. The transplant teams at all three clinic sites use similar policies and procedures and participate in identical research protocols. The bone marrow transplant program at Mayo Clinic is one of the largest and most experienced in the world. BMT team physicians are hematologists/oncologists who have experience and expertise in treating and caring for patients undergoing bone marrow transplant. These physicians are also members of other disease-oriented groups at Mayo. Therefore, they can help evaluate patients based on their extensive knowledge of specific diseases as well as their understanding of transplant.

    Liver Transplant
    Liver Transplant Overview
Currently, more than 17,000 people in the United States are waiting for liver transplants. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) , about5,300 liver transplantations were performed in the United States in 2002. The liver is the second most commonly transplanted major organ , after the kidney , so it is clear that liver disease is a common and serious problem in this country. It is important for liver transplant candidates and their families to understand the basic process involved with liver transplants, to appreciate some of the challenges and complications that face liver transplant recipients (people who receive livers), and to recognize symptoms that should alert recipients to seek medical help.
